Local JewelerCreating for YouIt’s great—and rare—to walk into a store you’veshopped for years and know you’ll be greetedby name. One of the wonderful things about havingbeen open since 1976, says owner VardaSinger, is the continuity. “We’re very proud ofbeing a ‘mom and pop’ shop. We greet our customersthe same way whether they are buying orjust visiting. We know them and their childrenand their grandchildren. Most of my staff hasbeen here 20 years or more.” Varda Singer, aChappaqua resident, was a lieutenant in theIsraeli Defense Forces and served in the militaryduring the Six Day War.Today, she uses her leadership skills on a newfront as a jewelry designer, following in herfather’s footsteps: He was a prominent diamonddealer in Israel. Today at ICD, you can findimports from around the globe. Varda’s recenttravels have unearthed 22K gold jewelry fromTurkey, Greece and India. “We are not a typicalVarda Singerjewelry store.” While ICD carries many brandname pieces, “we specialize in one-of-a-kind designs exclusive to ICD,” she said.“The challenging economy is forcing jewelry stores to get creative,” says Varda. With the soaring price of gold, Vardadesigned an affordable line of medallionsin silver, gold and diamonds forthis holiday season, while maintainingher high standards of detail and craftsmanship. The romantic, elegant, round -shapedjewels have proved to be very popular. For this coming Spring, Varda haslaunched her new high fashion line ofearrings, bracelets and necklaces inmulti-color white, champagne and pinkhues. As local jewelers, the staff at ICDstrives to keep a personal touch.Jewelry design and fashion will change, but our relationships of trust, qualityand value will always be there.Exclusively designed for ICDby Varda2 Inside Chappaqua February 2010

Sustainability is the new buzzwordin the homebuildingPROPRIETOR:industry. But what does makingSylvain Cotéyour home “green” really mean?IN BUSINESS SINCE: 1982Is it using high-tech machineryto regulate temperature andhumidity levels, retrofitting your HVAC systems to makeit more energy efficient, or using closed cell foam insulationto capture heat that might otherwise be lost? Is itbuilding with low-tech, durable materials such asreclaimed lumber, local maple from upstate New York,or sustainable bamboo to lessen a project’s environmentalimpact? Is it using surfaces that never need paintingsuch as natural earth plaster or engineered PVC?The answer, says Sylvain Coté, president and owner ofAbsolute Remodeling Corp, an award-winning greendesign/build firm, soon to be renamed Absolute GreenHomes, is all of the above, and more. “Green constructionis all about quality,” says Coté in his charmingFrench Canadian accent, “and green construction doesn’tcost more than other quality construction.” Actually, local and reclaimed materials can actually cost less;improved energy-efficiency and durable materials lowermaintenance costs. “But the real payback is that greenhomes are more comfortable and much healthier. And ahealthier home is a happier home,” he contends, “andthat leads to healthier, happier relationships.”The tenets of green building are the use of local, reclaimed, or sustainable materials that are durable, lowmaintenance and easily disposed of at the end of theirusable life, energy-efficiency, efficient use of space, andhealthy indoor air quality. “Homes are complexmachines that must be designed and assembled assuch” Coté says. From Artist to BuilderGreen is the New BlackBY MARIANNE A. CAMPOLONGOAbsolute GreenHomesCoté began his career as commercial photographer inhis native Canada. He supplemented his income workingfor his uncle, a general contractor and landlord, andcontinued to hone those skills building sets as a photographer’sassistant. Right before the market crash ofOctober 1987, he landed a dream job with a leadingphoto studio in Manhattan, moving his pregnant wifeand 4-year-old stepson to Coop City in the Bronx, only tosee the company fold up soon thereafter he arrived.Taking city buses with cans of paint and brushes “in oneof those old-lady shopping carts,” he worked as a paintingcontractor to support his young family. Always eagerto learn new things, he began attending seminars andexpanded his business to custom cabinetry, kitchen andbathroom renovations, additions, and eventually newhomes. Two decades later he continues to attend seminarsaround the country learning about environmentallyresponsible design, green buildingtechniques and strategies. He is passionate onthe subject, whether he is explaining how theright balance of humidity makes a home feelwarmer on cold winter days or describing a passivewine cellar that retains a nearly perfectbalance of temperature and humidity naturally, without electrical or mechanical equipment..Zero means perfectCoté’s first home, purchased in 2003 and rebuilt fromthe foundation up, was also his first green building project. It is a subtle blend of natural materials—a soaringstone fireplace, natural earth plaster, reclaimed woodfloors, cabinetry, and rough-hewn beams inside—andcleverly designed shingles, decking and roofing all madefrom engineered materials outside. The light-filled, octagon-shapedhouse, overlooking Truesdale Lake in SouthSalem, is both his retreat and, like other homes he hasrenovated or built, a showcase for his company’s workand Coté’s artistic vision. The renovated house scored a36 on the HERS (Home Energy Rating Scale), whichdetermines how energy—efficient a home is, with zerobeing the absolute score. That means he can power, heatand cool the house for nearly a year spending only whata typical household spends in four months. Although ahome only needs an 86 HERS rating to be Energy Starcertified and the project has garnered awards both fordesign and for being so green, if he were renovating ittoday, he said, “I would like to make it a ‘ZEH’—a zeroenergy home, the ultimate home.”Coté’s extensive website www.absolutegreenhomes.com alsoshowcases his work and provides a wealth of informationabout eco-friendly building and energy efficiency.A natural optimist and philosopher, Coté says, “Thefuture is bright. The recession has been good for peopleby focusing them on what a home should be—not ashort-term investment; it should be a sanctuary. The focal point of your life should be your family. Yourhome is where everything comes together or falls apart. It is a place to socialize, to recuperate. It should makeyou feel better, healthier. Every job we do makes people’slives better.”February 2010 Inside Chappaqua 7

The Schoenberg’s bring their special brand of day spaphilosophy to the community. “We provide affordableluxury at a great value with exceptional customer service,”says Bruce. They pride themselves in catering toparents who work inside and outside the home andcommuting professionals by staying open until 9:30p.m., not the usual bedroom community spa hours. In2009 Oasis won favorite day spa in the reader’s poll ofSpa Magazine, the largest consumer spa publication. Can Westchester Relax? What happens when a trail-blazing New York Citymarketing guy and a soft-spoken massage therapistwith a refined feel for customer service fall in love?Yes, they negotiate a long distance romance betweenChicago and New York and finally merge talents. Manyyears later, that couple, Bruce and Marti Schoenberg arenot only the owners of several day spas, but recognizedas having made lasting changes in the very culture ofthe industry.Getting StartedWhile it might have been love at first sight, it took sometime for the two to commit themselves to their day spaenterprise.Knowing he had met the “love of his life,” Bruce relinquishedthe trade show industry and life on the road toresearch the day spa environment in New York City. “Icrunched numbers, ran focus groups and did researchfor seven months before I had the comfort level I neededto know we could run the operation,” says Bruce. “Ibelieve luck is the residue of a lot of research.”The passion to pursue the idea was supplied by Marti whoknew intrinsically the days of the old-lady day spa wereover. “She was ahead of the curve in recognizing that theindustry was ripe for a cultural change,” says Bruce. In 1998 their union produced the first Oasis Day Spa inNew York City (originally located in Union Square) aswell as a new baby. By 1999 New York Magazine awardedOasis “Best New Day Spa” and their small, humblebeginnings gave way to a growing, thriving enterprise. It wasn’t long before another child arrived and anotherday spa opened. The couple are parents to Harry 11 andStella 9, and own Oasis on Park at One Park Avenue anda spa at the Affinia Dumont Hotel at 150 East 34thStreet, both in New York City.Expansion NorthIt Took a Couple ….BY JEAN SHEFFGood neighbors Bruce and Marti Schoenberg have brought New YorkCity's acclaimed Oasis Day Spa to Westchester.Like many successful business people with children theymoved to Westchester and hence the recent opening ofOasis Westchester located on the Saw Mill Parkway atExit 16 over the New York Sports Club in Dobbs Ferry.Oasis Westchester has 15 treatment rooms, an outdoorrooftop garden, a European Vichy shower, a nail salon, men and women’s locker rooms with steam rooms andall the amenities, a relaxation room with complimentaryrefreshments and a shop that features several skin careand gift lines. They also pride themselves on employing the most talentedNew York State licensed therapists. Marti, who isactively involved in the hiring process says, “We are creatinga spa environment that hasn’t existed inWestchester, just the way it hadn’t existed in New Yorkway back when.” To that end all therapists are requiredto complete 12 hours of continuing education each yearin a new modality to confirm their level of commitmentto the industry and expand their knowledge. ContinuingEducation is not a New York State requirement withvery few spa’s requiring it, but it is a must at Oasiswhich prides itself on being the ‘education spa’.New advances and programs are continually introduced.Dr. Andrew Kleinman, M.D. Board Certified Plastic Surgeonnow takes appointments at the spa on Saturdays andDirector of Massage, Bruce Baltz, who is originally fromLarchmont, is offering ‘modified for the spa’ AIS (ActiveIsolated Stretching). This method, often used by sportsprofessionals in rehabilitation, brings stretching to a newlevel by reaching the deepest tissues in the body andincluding the client as an active participant.Marti and Bruce see their operations as not merely spasbut part of the expansion of the wellness movement. “In astressful world we offer a wellness lifestyle that includesattention to physical and mental well-being,” says Bruce.JEAN SHEFF is a Westchester–based writer and editor and dayspa aficionado—mud wrap anyone?Massage for HaitiOasis is leading the effort in a major fund raising effortin New York City and across the nation. Love♥StoriesFROM AROUNDT O W NThe Wallaces An “Unforgettable” Love StoryBY ELINOR GRIFFITHOne of the pre-eminent couplesof the 20th century—DeWittand Lila Wallace—are well-knownas the founders of the internationalpublishing giant Reader’s Digest, which started right in ourWestchester backyard. Signs of theirgenerous philanthropy aboundlocally: The Wallace Wing at theNorthern Westchester Hospital inMount Kisco, for instance. But farfrom the public eye was their heartwarming60-year romance….So what were their secrets? You’llfind out at “Reader’s Digest: TheLocal Magazine That Conquered theWorld,” a new exhibit at the NewCastle Historical Society. The show, opening on February 13, chroniclesthe Wallaces and the unprecedentedgrowth of their “little magazine” thateventually reached more than 100million people worldwide.Wally, as Lila affectionately nicknamedhim, had a romantic streak.Having returned from fighting inFrance during World War I, he wasworking in St. Paul, Minnesota whenhe learned that Lila Bell Acheson, aschool chum’s pretty sister he’d meteight years prior, was now a socialworker at the YWCA in New York.Just before Christmas in 1919, hesent a funny letter imploring her toinvestigate how “the industrial concernsare in frightful shape in theTwin Cities. Working conditions forgirls are awful. It would take yousome time to straighten thingsout—but you ought to come.” Lilatraveled a lot in her job. She wrotethat she’d be posted in St. Paul forthree weeks in February 1920.From at least one account Wallyasked Lila to marry him within minutesof seeing her again. Otherreports say “on their first date.” Ontheir second date, she accepted. The Wallaces in their forties. “Affection breedson thoughtfulness,” said DeWitt. “Thoughtfulnessis merely a habit which can be acquiredovernight by simply resolving to do somethingthoughtful every day.”When he told her about his plan forReader’s Digest, she “knew rightaway that it was a gorgeous idea,”she recalled years later. Fourmonths after their marriage inPleasantville, in October 1921, theylaunched the first issue. Theirs wasa successful partnership both athome and at work, as they toiledday and night on the Digest, eventuallyamassing a staff as “the littlemagazine” proved a huge success.Wally could push the boundaries attimes: He liked to drink, smoke, andstay up all night playing poker. Hedrove his car recklessly—few peoplewho knew him would ride with him.He bought a four-seater Fairchildmonoplane and learned to fly, oftenenjoying scaring Lila by buzzingtheir house. (In 1940 he donated hisplane to the Canadian governmentin support of the British war effort.)From accounts of people who knewthem and in their letters to eachother, they were a loving and affectionatepair, with Lila exerting a positiveinfluence. “I used to be a moodyfellow, and I’ve always been a worrier,”said Wally. “Lila is the most eventemperedperson alive. She canalways snap me out of it.”At home at High Winds, their mansionoverlooking Byram Lake, Wallyand Lila would dance for 15 minutesin the evenings in their family room. And when having leisurely cocktailstogether, Lila liked to sip from anEgyptian gold goblet, which she toldvisitors was 4,000 years old. It was agift of The Metropolitan Museum ofArt and the Egyptian government, asthanks for her support in rescuingthe Aswan Dam treasures.A staffer once found a scribblednote under a pile of papers inDeWitt’s office. In his handwritingand dated 15 years into his marriage,he had listed 22 reasonsunder the title, “Why I Should BeVery Happy Always.” No. 1 was“Perfect Wife.”DeWitt also wrote down his “Rulesfor a Good Marriage” as follows:Continued on page 24New ExhibitReader’s Digest:The Local Magazine ThatConquered the WorldFebruary 13, 2010-January 2011New Castle Historical Society, 100King Street, ChappaquaAdmission: Free22 Inside Chappaqua February 2010

R I C K ’ SLast LicksThe World’s Biggest Valentine’s PresentBY RICK REYNOLDSIllustration by Rick ReynoldsEvery year my wife and I giveeach other little nothings forValentine’s Day. She never liked hergifts from me much. I rememberthe perfume was a bust. Who knewmusk wasn’t her favorite scent? Then there was the nice, heavy,Terrycloth bathrobe from Victoria’sSecret—which she considered aninsult. Call me Mr. Romantic, buteven rubbing noses with her didn’tmake her feel better about thatpresent.Giving up on romance, I wenttowards the garden tool genre, butrakes and weed pullers weren’tdoing the trick either. Finally lastyear, after 25 years of less-thanstellarpresent exchanges, I had anepiphany. Since she loved the winterand especially snow, I’d give her apair of snowshoes. Nothing’s hotterthan snowshoes these days. Whatcould be cooler? Teenagers lovethem. Geriatrics love them. We evenhave dogs in our town who wearsnow shoes. Snowshoes are so“sick,” as my daughter would say,approvingly.44 Inside Chappaqua February 2010Anyway, my wife used hersnowshoes all last season, but shestill seemed displeased. WhenI drilled down to try and understandher disappointment, she spilled. Why hadn’t I gotten a pair formyself, she wanted to know. Whywould I want to wear tennis racketson my feet, I asked her. Then Ireminded her of my Invertiphobia. For all you snowbirds who flee toFlorida at the first sign of frost,“Invertiphobia” is the fear of landingupside down in the snow whilewearing snowshoes. In my worstnightmare, there I’d be, with thebottoms of my snowshoes on thesurface of the snow facing the sky—and my body pointing downtowards the center of the Earth—trying in vain to light a match tostay warm. If I really want to upsetmyself, there’s only one match leftand the striker’s wet.Exactly, she said, snapping me outof my trance. That’s what she wastalking about: hadn’t I heard of the“buddy system?” Would I reallywant her out in the deep woods insub-zero temperatures, all byherself and out of cell phone range, she asked. Was this a trick question,I thought to myself? Of course I’d beconcerned, I said, and had been forhalf of last winter. But she clearlyhad a point. So with VD Day 2010 fastapproaching, I turned to my 17-yearold daughter for advice. She had anovel solution. This Valentine’s Day,I should buy a pair of men’ssnowshoes, size 30 (large enough towalk on water) and give them to mygood wife for Valentine’s Day. SoI did just that, and in a selfless act, gave them to her early just so shecould loan them to me at the firstsign of snow. Her smile told meI had finally found a present sheapproved of.As luck would have it, a nor’easterblew up the coast recently, dumpingenough snow in the ConnecticutRiver valley to go snowshoeing.Numbed by what I was about to do,and by a pint of single malt, mywife and I headed to the town golfcourse for an outing of mirth andsnowshoeing. Though it wasdifficult at first, I soon discoveredI could move without falling. Butthen I put on the snowshoes and itbecame more complicated. After anhour or so of stepping on my ownfeet, a sorry circumstance withbuilt-in crampons, I was soonshoeing an enormous image acrossthe pristine snow of the Back 9—hoping my heart-shaped trackingwould show up later that day onGoogle Earth.Chappaqua alumnus and long-timeresident, humorist RICK REYNOLDSdivides his time among book, blog(www.my-pnl.blogspot.com,)magazine column, and marketingcommunications assignments.
