C - 2. Granting of the benefitsThese are the Belgian <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> sectors covered by European regulations:a) sickness, maternity and paternity benefits in two categories:- benefits in kind (medical and dental care, medical drugs, stay in hospital, etc.) which areunder certain circumstances administered in the country of work or residence pursuantto this country's legislation;- benefits in cash (substitution for income loss, for salary) granted pursuant to thelegislation of the country where the employer is subject to <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong>.b) benefits for accidents at work and occupational disease are granted, apart from a fewexceptions, according to the same rules as in the sickness and maternity insurancec) disability benefits are granted regardless of the country of residence. There are two typesof disability schemes in the member states: invalidity pensions calculated according tothe insurance periods, and invalidity pensions that are not linked to insurance periods (likein Belgium). Invalidity benefits are granted proportionally to the insurance periods in everymember state or pursuant to the legislation of the member state where the invalidityoccurred.d) retirement pensions. Persons who have worked in various EU member states receive apension from all these countries, proportionally to the insurance periods they have worked in.e) survivor's pensions are granted according to the same rules as for old-age pensions.f) in principle, it is impossible to apply for unemployment benefits in a country where youwere not subject to <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> before losing your job. In some circumstances, entitlementto unemployment benefits is maintained when you seek a job in another country.g) family benefits are paid by the country where you are subject to <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong>.Supplementary benefits may be paid on specific conditions.More information is available with the competent services (Cf. chapter “Useful addressesand telephone numbers”).If you apply for benefits, you must use the official procedures and forms. An official formcontains all the information required to obtain the cooperation of <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> institutionsin the countries concerned.
