Statistics and budgetsIn the course of his life, every citizen will be entitled to <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong> benefits one day or another.And he will also have to contribute to the financing of <strong>social</strong> <strong>security</strong>. The sums committed toexercise this collective solidarity represent a significant share of the state’s budget.In the interests of brevity, only the benefits regarding a great number of citizens have been dealtwith.A. Statistics – number of persons entitled to the main <strong>social</strong> benefitsPensions – 2010Retired people (retirement pension and survivor’s pension):16- Salaried persons: 1,670,766 beneficiaries (+ 8,192 compared to 2009)- Self-employed persons: 489,909 beneficiaries (- 615 compared to 2009)- Civil servants (federal and other civil servants) : 443,993 beneficiaries(+ 10,034 compared to 2009)However, the total amount of retired people belonging to the three schemes is not equal to thesum of the three schemes. Indeed, many retired people have had a mixed career (i.e. a pensionfor the part of their career as a self-employed person and a pension for the part of their careeras a salaried person).Unemployment benefits – June 2011- Unemployed persons receiving benefits: 642,123 beneficiaries (- 38,878 compared toJune 2010)- Salaried persons supported by the National employment office: 297,004 beneficiaries(- 8,290 compared to June 2010)- Salaried persons having adapted their working time with the support of the Nationalemployment office: 273,141 beneficiaries (+ 4,246 compared to June 2010)That makes a total of 1,216,344 beneficiaries (- 38,903 compared to June 2010).Family benefits – on 1 January 2010Medical care- Number of children qualifying for family benefits in the salaried workers’ scheme and inthe civil servants’ scheme: 2,425,544- Number of children qualifying for family benefits in the self-employed persons’ scheme:206,558- Beneficiaries in the general salaried persons’ scheme: 6,464,111 entitled persons and3,100,824 dependants (on 30 June 2010)- Other beneficiaries (self-employed persons’ scheme, …): 702,181 entitled persons and362.453 dependants (on 30 June 2010)
