VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL MARCH 19, 2006Stations of the CrossThe Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Wednesdays at 1:45 P.M. (withthe school children) and on Fridays at 7:00 P.M., followed by Benediction ofthe Blessed Sacrament. A booklet with meditations on the Way of the Crosscomposed by Pope Benedict XVI is available in the church bookracks for privateprayer. A plenary indulgence is granted to those who make the Way ofthe Cross, under the usual conditions. Confessions will be heard on Fridaysat 6:30 P.M. before Stations.Dispensation from Friday AbstinenceFrom time to time during Lent, we receive calls at the Rectoryrequesting a dispensation from the discipline of Friday abstinence.According to Church teaching, only a bishop can grant a general dispensationfrom this Lenten obligation. The chancery has informed usthat Bishop Imesch does not grant a general dispensation, but insteadurges those who have a serious reason for not being able to abstain frommeat, to choose another penance to perform on that Friday.Sacrament of Reconciliation During LentDuring Lent the Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated each Saturdayfrom 4:00–5:00 P.M., on Tuesdays from 10:00 A.M. to noon, on Fridays ofLent (excluding Good Friday) at 6:30 P.M. before the Stations of the Cross, and on the Sundays of Lent, after the 7:00 A.M. Mass and 20 minutes beforethe 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30 A.M. Masses.Opportunities forLenten AlmsgivingAlong with prayer and fasting, almsgiving is oneof the pillars of Lent. By works of charity and sharingour gifts with the less fortunate, we strive todetach ourselves from an inordinate desire forearthly wealth and possessions as well as expressour desire to deepen our love for Christ by servingthe needs of our needy brothers and sisters. Over thenext several weeks, there will be many opportunitiesat our parish to participate in Lenten works ofmercy.PADS—All monies placed in the poor boxesover the weekend of March 18–19 will benefitDuPage PADS, which provides food and overnightshelter for the homeless in our area.Food Drive for Precious Blood Parish—Wewill sponsor a food drive and poor box collectionfor Precious Blood Parish, our sister parish inChicago, on April 1–2.Thank you for your generosity in servingthe needs of our less fortunate brothers andsisters, both local and around the world.March 25—Feast of the Annunciation—Day of the UnbornSaturday, March 25, is the Feast of the Annunciation. On this day, we celebrate when the angel Gabriel announced to the BlessedVirgin Mary that God had chosen her to be the Mother of the Son of God, and Mary’s consent through her fiat (let it be done untome). At that moment, Jesus was conceived in her womb through the power of the Holy Spirit.Since this was the beginning of the Incarnation—of God taking on our human flesh in Jesus in the womb of Mary—this feast waschosen as the “Day of the Unborn”. We are called to remember that God’s tremendous gift of life begins at the moment of conceptionand so must be defended and protected from that moment. Let us renew our commitment to praying and working for the defense ofthe unborn, the least and most defenseless of our brothers and sisters. Try to make a Holy Hour in the Adoration Chapel that day. Praythe Pro-life Rosary. Offer the following prayer to Our Lady of Life composed by our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul the Great.Prayer to Our Lady of LifeO Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living,to you do we entrust the cause of life.Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbersof babies not allowed to be born,of the poor whose lives are made difficult,of the men and women who are the victims of brutal violence,of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy.Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of lifewith honesty and love to the people of our time.Obtain for themthe grace to accept the Gospel as a gift ever new,the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their livesand the courage to bear witness to it resolutely,in order to build , together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love,to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. Amen.Pope John Paul II, Evangelium VitaePage 3

VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL MARCH 19, 2006Dear Sisters and Brothers,In the aftermath of the tsunami we all remember seeingthe grim pictures of death and destruction, of parents grievingfor children and of children grieving for parents whowere no more. Catholic Relief Services not only respondedimmediately to the disaster but also made a commitment tooffer long-term rehabilitation programs for the survivors. In the Diocese of Solwezi in Zambia, over 2,250 childrenare orphaned or have parents suffering from AIDS. CatholicRelief Services supports the Orphans and VulnerableChildren program operated by the Diocese of Solwezi forthese neglected children who otherwise would have no oneto care for them.Numerous refugees from Afghanistan and Liberiahave fled their homes because of persecution and threatsof torture. Catholic Relief Services resettles refugees inareas where they can experience freedom from terrorand violence. Our hearts have to be moved by these examples of whatour brothers and sisters throughout the world have sufferedand continue to experience. Catholic Relief Servicesis the agency that works on behalf of distressed persons in99 countries throughout the world. Last year you contributeda total of $320,000 to the work of Catholic ReliefServices and in your great generosity provided more than1½ million dollars for the tsunami relief.May the Lord bless you for your past generosity. Please respond once more with a generous heart to thisyear’s collection.Sincerely in Christ,Most Reverend Joseph L. ImeschBishop of JolietEvening Adult Bible StudyThe next meeting of the Evening Bible Study is thisTuesday, March 21, 2006. Chapters 9 and 10 of theActs of the Apostles will be covered. Meetings are at7:30 P.M. in Madonna Hall. All are welcome. Bringyour bible and join us.Let’s Look to the YouthThe main point of every retreat and homily that BishopSheen ever gave was an effort to inspire everyone to make adaily Holy Hour. Before he died he was interviewed on TV. Thequestion he was asked was who inspired and influenced him?Was it a Pope, a Cardinal, a Bishop, a Priest or perhaps a Nun?Bishop Sheen said, “No.” The one who inspired him tomake a daily Holy Hour was a youth. When the Communiststook over China they went to one church and locked up thepriest in his own house. That became his jail. Then they wentto the church, broke into the Tabernacle, threw the SacredHosts on the floor and left. They did not see a young girl kneeling in prayer. She was toosmall to notice. That night she came back, quietly sneaking past theguards at the priest house, before entering the dark cold church. There she knelt in a Holy Hour of prayer before going intothe sanctuary to receive her Lord and her God in HolyCommunion. At that time Communion was still on the tongueand once a day was all that was allowed. For this reason the little girl came back every night until all of theSacred Hosts were consumed. She bent down to the floor andreceived Jesus on her tongue. All of this was witnessed by the parishpriest from his window, as he saw the little girl in the moonlight. The priest knew exactly how many hosts were in the ciboriumbecause it was he who counted them and consecratedthem. When the last host was consumed on the thirty-sixthnight the little girl was discovered by the guards as she wasleaving. They grabbed her and beat her to death. The priest lived to tell the story. When Bishop Sheen heardit as a seminarian, he made a promise to God to make a HolyHour everyday during his entire priestly life, a promise hekept until he died at the age of eighty-two. Few know it was ayoung person who inspired him.The Adoration Chapel is open24 hours a day, seven days a week.Bottle Collection Campaign A Huge SuccessThanks to so many who took bottles and filled them withcoins and currency and checks. I just finished reading PopeBenedict’s encyclical in which he stated how very importantlove is to man. The parishioners of Visitation Church extendedto those in need all that the Pope asks and then some.A special thank you to all those who helped—the children, theteens, the adults and the families. Our office staff cannot bethanked enough for all their help. Thank you to Mark who takesthose heavy coins to the bank. All this would not be possible if not for the kindness andunderstanding of our pastor, Father Joseph Siegel and FatherChristopher Floss. Thank you very much.Woman’s Choice Services VolunteersBarbara, Betty, Rene and RuthPage 5
