nced CareLankenau Medical Center’s extensiverenovation is a win-win for everyone.By Emily RileyAn artist’s rendition of a waitingarea in Lankenau Medical Center’snew Patient Pavilion.Lankenau Medical Center celebrated its 150th birthdaylast year. Pretty soon, though, it won’t be showingits age, thanks to a $529 million renovation projectscheduled for completion in 2013.“We began this back in 2006, when we initiated the designdiscussion and master plan for the Lankenau campus,” saysBetty Craig, vice president of patient care services at LankenauMedical Center. “Over the past four years, we’ve designed allaspects of it.”Craig acknowledges that the 60-year-old building, withits semi-private rooms, didn’t meet modern standards. Thus, the plan was set in motion for the new Patient Pavilion. OnOct. 27, the hospital broke ground on a state-of-the-art PatientPavilion for heart, vascular and lung care, which is soon to be thehighlight of its 92-acre campus. The five-story, 281,000-squarefootstructure will encompass the existing facilities on theWynnewood campus. It includes a 32-bed intensive careunit, a 32-bed step-down medical unit and a 32-bed telemetryinpatient care unit. The transition from shared bedrooms toprivate patient facilities is the main focus, along with technological, medical and aesthetic modifications.Craig says the project will enhance the overall patientexperience while providing a more welcoming and comfortableenvironment for family members. “Years ago, they didn’treally come to the hospital and didn’t participate actively,” shesays. “Now, we’ll have families who are there 16 hours a daysupporting the patient.”The new facility will feature a sleeper couch in each room, alarge family area and privacy curtains around each bed. “As welook at providing a superior patient experience, we’re doing itfor their loved ones, as well,” Craig says.Healthcare guide/spring 2011 www.mainlinetoday.comH7

Other enhancements include vastly improved lighting, stability bars installed in each room and a lift system capableof transporting patients from the bed to a nearby chair. Thepavilion will also keep all equipment and patient records onhand for immediate use.The expansion will also position Lankenau to meet thedemands of healthcare reform. A computer at every bedsidewill enable the efficient and accurate management of electronicmedical records. “When you go to the hospital and you’re onmedication, the system allows us to enter medication info, quickly look through your previous admissions, contact an areapharmacy and confirm your dosage,” says Craig. “In the end, healthcare reform is about giving better healthcare to people. And that’s what we’re trying to do here.”The project also calls for a 1,300-car parking garage, which isslated for completion later this year. There will also be improvementsto existing intensive care units, radiology and radiationoncology services, plus the hospital’s main lobby. And lastyear, Lankenau Medical Center unveiled a cutting-edge cardiothoracicintensive care unit and introduced its ComprehensiveBreast Care Center. The hospital is also planning to expandits arsenal of specialists—namely in heart, lung and vascularsurgery and medicine.“The people of Lower Merion Township have long beentremendous partners with us, and it’s because of them that thisproject has really come to light,” says Craig. “Our goal is to makethe hospital better for them.”To learn more, visit mainlinehealth.org/lankenau.MLTHxx www.mainlinetoday.com Health & Wellness/spring 2011

Eat to LiveIn the wake of recent evidence that teen eating disorders are on the rise,Brandywine Hospital is offering in-patient, specialized care for thosesuffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eatingdisorder. It’s the first facility of its kind in Chester County and the surroundingarea. The hospital’s Eating Disorders Program features 16 beds and roundthe-clockpatient care. Under the leadership of Dr. Michael Pertschuk, itaddresses the physical, medical and psychological implications of a wide rangeof eating disorders in those 14 and older.Pertschuk’s more than 20 years of experience in the field started with asimple observation during his residency at the University of Pennsylvania. “Ihad a hard time getting my head around how someone who was not psychoticand not irrational could be so off in terms of their body perception and physicalneeds,” he says.Pertschuk and his staff of nurses and dieticians have been working witheating disorder patients since 1994, previously at Philadelphia’s FriendsHospital. So when the opportunity came to move to a new facility, Pertschukjumped at the chance. “There’s nothing like this in the area,” he says. “One ofthe primary differences is that there’s immediate medical access 24/7, which issomething we didn’t have at Friends.”Having gastrointestinal and endocrine services on hand is crucial to anyeffective eating disorders program. “We’re very happy with the physicalaspects of the new facility, and it’s also really nice being attached to a medicalhospital,” says Pertschuk. “Eating disorders have a lot of potential medicalcomplications, so if an emergency situation arises, we’ve got a rapid responseteam here.”Brandywine Hospital’s Eating Disorders Programis the first of its kind in Chester County (left);counselor Lisa Simon works with patients.H12 www.mainlinetoday.com Healthcare guide/spring 2011

Researchers arealso seeing a trend in males. “The culturalpressures for thinness have been aroundfor years, but with the recent rise in socialnetworking sites, I’d be curious to see ifall that connectedness puts more pressureon people to look a certain way,” saysPertschuk. “Everyone’s on Facebook, andso we’re more involved in the intimatedetails of each other’s lives than we wereawhile ago. It does seem that the numberof cases in the last decade is on the rise.”The report also estimates that .5 percentof teenage girls in the United States haveanorexia nervosa, and 1 to 2 percent metcriteria for bulimia nervosa. Males makeup about 10 percent of all eating disordercases. The services provided for patientsand families at Brandywine are quite extensive. The focus is on comprehensive care, rather than addressing one issue. Individualadult therapy is available for parents andother family members. Group counselingprovides a forum for loved ones tomeet with therapists and “compare notes,”Pertschuk says.One-on-one nutritional planning witha full-time dietician is an ongoing featureof the program, as are post-dischargepsychiatric follow-ups in addition to thevarious cognitive and recreational therapies.Patients also have access to a gymunder strict supervision, with a focus onrebuilding body mass and developingappropriate exercise habits.Perhaps the most important part ofensuring long-term success is setting up astrong support system at home. Becauseconditions like anorexia and bulimia arerooted in physical and mental control, families often have a difficult time establishingboundaries and taking an activerole in the recovery process.“One of the biggest misconceptionsis that families need to be hands-off andnot try to exact control,” says Pertschuk.“People think they’re going to send theirkids to our facility, and we’re going to fixthem, which is problematic. Obviously, ifpeople with eating disorders could managethe issue, they wouldn’t need treatment. They do need it—and they need a lot ofsupport when they go home.”For more, visit brandywinehospital.com. March is National ColorectalCancer Awareness Month“Things to Do Now That I’m 50”More than 90% of colorectal cancer cases are in people age 50 and older. For thisreason, the American Cancer Society recommends you start getting tested for thedisease at age 50.While colorectal cancer is often found after symptoms appear, most people withcolon or rectal cancer have no symptoms of the disease. Symptoms usually appearwith advanced disease. This is why getting the recommended screening test beforesymptoms develop is so important. Colonoscopy is one form of screening that can beused to look for colorectal polyps and cancer. For more information visit theAmerican Cancer Society: www.cancer.org or call 1-800-ACS-2345.Take control: be an informed health consumer, get screened.Call your physician and discuss what option is right for you.Robert R. John Pfrommer, Douglassville“Phoenixville’s robotic surgery got me back to life faster.”da Vinci ® Robotic-Assisted Surgery at Phoenixville Hospital. For John Pfrommer, a routine checkupturned out to be anything but. His PSA levels were elevated and he needed prostate surgery. “I would havebeen nervous, but everyone was so polite and comforting.” His doctor recommended minimally invasiveda Vinci surgery at Phoenixville Hospital, which results in less pain, less scarring and a shorter recovery timethan traditional prostate surgery*. John was convinced. “When they said I wouldn’t be out of commissionlong, they weren’t kidding. I was back at home the next day – and back in the gym just a few weekslater. It was amazing.” For more information about Phoenixville Hospital’s robotic-assisted da Vinci SurgicalSystem, visit phoenixvillehospital.com or call 610-983-1000.* Typical results depend on many factors. Consult your physician about the benefits and risks of da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Surgery for your condition.
