2. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENTThe Radiology Department provides radiology services to all hospitals within <strong>Austin</strong> <strong>Health</strong>. The RepatriationHospital serves a predominantly out-patient population while the <strong>Austin</strong> Hospital serves a predominantly inpatientpopulation and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre isserviced on two half-days per week from the <strong>Austin</strong>.The Radiology Nursing staff aim to provide excellent standards of patient care, in collaboration within amulti-disciplinary health care team. Standards of care are developed, maintained and continuouslyreviewed, and updated. Staff are supported clinically and professionally by all staff, Clinical Support Nurses,and the Clinical Nurse Educator. The Radiology Department, itself, provides extensive educationalresources and programs to support the development of staff. A number of clinical radiological meetings areheld each week and staff members are encouraged to attend wherever possible. The department stronglysupports and encourages staff taking advantage of external educational opportunities and providesassistance to staff doing so.3. <strong>POSITION</strong> OBJECTIVEIn collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager the Associate Nurse Unit Manager is expected to:-• Effectively manage resources and budgetary allocation in order to provide a clinical service whichdelivers prompt and efficient responses to patient requirements.• Manage the day to day requirements of the clinical floor, by coordinating services, with considerationof workload, prioritisation of clinical requirements, and staff skill mix.• Foster a high standard of service provision by developing and maintaining collaborative relationshipswithin and outside the organization.• Assist with administrative processes necessary to ensure efficient operation of the department.• Identify areas requiring improvement, and assist in the implementation of strategies to improve them.• Contribute to the development of clinical and management skills of other staff in the department.• Act as a clinical role model, and professional mentor by demonstration and promotion of excellencein clinical care.• Initiate appropriate procedures and follow up in the occurrence of an adverse event or incidentinvolving a staff member, patient and/or their significant others and ensure the Nurse Unit Manageris informed, and the event documented.• Be the principle point of contact for nursing, for clinical issues on a daily operational basis.4. <strong>POSITION</strong> REQUIREMENTSPosition specific• To encourage and support a philosophy of care which is patient focused, where care is integratedfrom pre-admission to post-discharge and where the family is welcome in the carer’s team: –• There are strategies in place to monitor and evaluate patient care.• Responsibility is assumed for planning and coordination of patient transfer/discharge.• Discharge planning is managed and evaluated.• Ensure patient care standards meet professional, organisation, legal and ethical requirements: –• Standards and protocols for patient care are current, known and accessible to staff.• Participate in quality improvement activities within the department/ward• Continuity of care is maintained by appropriate handover of patient condition.• Specific patient care needs are met, including psychosocial support and multicultural needs.Revised September 2009Radiology NUM – Nicole Cave


• Assume a clinical leadership role, providing expert advise, guidance and support: –• Clinical knowledge and skills are maintained• Staff are appropriately allocated to meet workload demands.• New/casual/undergraduate staff are orientated to the workplace.• Liaison with key stakeholders to ensure that patient care is delivered through an integrated,multidisciplinary approach.• Assume responsibility for the quality of service provided to patients: –•••Problems with the service are promptly addressed.Goals and philosophy of the service are represented to staff.Initiate and participate in the development of innovative policies and procedures.• Undertake to develop and maintain positive working relationships with otherwards/departments/disciplines throughout the AUSTIN HEALTH.• Assist with management and maintenance of unit budgets and specific portfolio’s: –• Ensure day-to-day management of staff and resources meet the requirements of the NUM,CSU and professional bodies.• Portfolio’s are efficiently and effectively maintained, reported on and evaluated.• Maintain safe work practices and environment by actively reducing hazards, reportingaccidents/incidents, following and promoting the AUSTIN HEALTH principles of the “No Lift” & “NoNeedlestick” programs and actively promoting accident prevention: -•••Incidents are monitored and appropriately documented and preventative action taken.In-service sessions in emergency procedures are attended.Relevant knowledge exists to safely care for patients undergoing all treatments andprocedures.• To be a conduit through which information is disseminated to staff: -• Performance issues are communicated and discussed with the NUM.• Participate in, relevant committees, meetings and projects.• Teamwork is enhanced through timely and appropriate communication.• Deputise for the NUM in his/her absence.• Prepare and submit reports as required.• Abide by <strong>Austin</strong> <strong>Health</strong> corporate policies and practices as varied from time to time.• Participate in <strong>Austin</strong> <strong>Health</strong> performance appraisal program as required.• Undertake not to reveal to any person or entity any confidential information relating to patients andemployees, policies, processes and dealings and not to make public statements relating to the affairsof <strong>Austin</strong> <strong>Health</strong> without prior authority of the Chief Executive Officer.• Participate in the emergency incident response activities, as defined within the EmergencyResponse Manual, as and when required, at the direction of management.• Rotation between both <strong>Austin</strong> and Repat Campuses and all clinical areas.• On the different ANUM rotations, perform duties generic to the role in all clinical areas and performany additional duties specific to the clinical area of rotation.• Requirements of the role, as varied from time to time.5. •••••••••••Possess post graduate qualifications and/or a minimum 5 years post graduate experience in nursingspecialties appropriate to the department, with a minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience inradiology.Demonstrated leadership and management skills that contribute to the team: communicating visionand values, empowering others, building capacity for change and development, and negotiatingsituations of conflict.Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, and problemsolving abilities.Commitment to work in all clinical areas of the department including flexibility for overtime and ‘OnCall’ requirements (overnight and 24hr weekend coverage) as rostered and required by the NUM.Maintains clinical competencies expected of the registered nurse employed in the Radiologydepartment as defined by the NUM.Demonstrated ability to perform the management responsibilities and clinical duties of an ANUM asoutlined in the position specific requirements of the role.Demonstrated commitment to, and accountability for, service quality, best practice with evidencebased principles, environmental safety, and the continuing professional development of self andothers.Commitment and flexibility to undertake different requirements of the role as varied from time to time.Competence in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and organisational clinical management systems.Ensure accurate and comprehensive documentation of patient care.Demonstrates a commitment to own continuing education opportunities to be progressive within therole and clinical performance and actively seeks feedback.Desirable but not essential for Performance of the Position• Radiology Clinical Nurse Specialist Status• Previous experience in an ANUM role• Previous experience in the clinical support and education of Radiology Nursing staff• Knowledge and Management of professional and Industrial issues• Post graduate qualifications appropriate to the role.6.
