There are approximately 266 days,or 38 weeks, between conception and birth. Or, it can be said that40 weeks separate a pregnant woman’s last menstrual period andthe birth of her baby because ovulation (and therefore conception)normally occurs two weeks after the start of the last menstrual period. Therefore, a pregnant woman can approximately determine the dateof her baby’s arrival by counting out 280 days (40 weeks) from thefirst day of her last menstrual period. 16 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, February 17, 2011OutdoorsAvoid the spikes when fertilizing oaksBy NEIL SPERRYDear Neil: When should Ifertilize my oak trees? Whathould I use? Are the spikesgood? If your trees are growing inhe same soil as your lawnrass, they probably won’teed any special feedings.owever, to give you an anwer, fertilize in early spring, arly summer and early fall.se an all-nitrogen plantood. Use granules, perhapsven the same ones you’ll aplyto your lawn.Spikes, in my opinion, ren’t very good. They putay too much fertilizer inne spot, and none at all justfew inches away. Broadcastpplications of granules areetter.Dear Neil: You recently recmmendeda one-inch layer ofanadian peat moss to stopake All Root Rot in my St.Augustine lawn. I’ll be applyngit beneath 14 oak trees.ill I be able to mow the lawn,r would that remove the mossnd limit its effectiveness?I had the same concern thefirst time I treatedfor TARR by usingthe peat moss. But,worry not. Surprisingly,if you breakthe bales of peatinto small pieces, and if you waterthe peat after yourake it across theturf, it will filterdown onto the soilsurface (where itbelongs to stop theroot rot organism).Human nature would haveyou mow at a slower enginespeed, and that’s fine. However, you won’t pick up verymuch of the peat moss at all.You should see very noticeableresults.Time to apply the peat:April or May.Dear Neil: My husbandis a geologist, and he reallywanted two ginkgo trees. Wehad a hard time finding themlocally, but we were able tobuy them via mail order. Theywere eight feet tall when weplanted them, but they did leafout and they held their leavesthe balance of the season. Now,Gardener’sMailbagothers tell us they’reugly and not suitedhere. What wouldyou advise?I have two ginkgoesin my landscape, and I’mthrilled with howthey look. They’reslow-growing (just6-12 inches peryear), so I haven’tused them as primeshade trees. However, they’re handsomeaccent trees. You want to buy a graftedmale ginkgo, however. The femaletrees bear fleshy cones, and the mess and smell areawful.Keep them moist, and fertilizethem in spring, earlysummer and early fall with ahigh-nitrogen or all-nitrogenplant food. And, be patient.Dear Neil: I have severallarge potted sago palmsaround my pool. The tag saidthey were OK in the cold, butmy plants’ leaves are yellowbrown.Should I prune theleaves off?Sago palms are hurt whentemperatures drop veryfar into the 20s. You certainlycould prune them ifthe leaves are ugly anyway. There’s nothing to be gainedby leaving browned foliagein place. Hopefully, you’ll getnew leaves coming up afterthe winter.!Have a question you’d likeNeil to consider?
