This is the chess set that took Marc about a year to whittle. After he finished it inDecember 2005, we played marathon games, with Tom usually emerging victorious.The board was made out of an old cardboard box and we signed the bottom with ournames and the message “Three Americans taken hostage February 13, 2003. Stillalive 10 December 2005.”This copy of the New Testament was given to Marc by one of the military prisoners,Sergeant Lasso. It had passages written in English side by side with passages inSpanish, which helped Marc learn the language.
