The food serving area pictured here is a bit fancier than what we were accustomedto. On the far left of the lower shelf, there is a block of sugar that the FARC calledpanela. The FARC frequently carried these with them for general cooking as well asfor boosts of energy during the marches.These are the kind of boots that everyone (FARC included) wore. Because Keithcouldn’t find any that fit him in the days immediately following the crash and theFARC didn’t want his big footprints creating a trail behind us, they cut off the toesof a pair of boots and forced him to wear them. He had to walk through the junglewith his toes dangling out of the front.
