6R140 (RWD) Transmission with external PCM or TCMTransmission Control System ArchitectureStarting in 2011 MY, the 6R140 replaces 5R110W in Super Duty truck applications. The 6R140 is a 6-speed, step ratio transmission that is controlled by an external PCM (gas engine applications) orTCM (Diesel engine applications). For Diesel the TCM communicates to the Engine Control Module (ECM), ABSModule, Instrument Cluster and Transfer Case Control Module using the high speed CAN communication link. TheTCM incorporates a standalone OBD-II system. The TCM independently processes and stores fault codes, freezeframe, supports industry-standard PIDs as well as J1979 Mode 09 CALID and CVN. The TCM does not directlyilluminate the MIL, but requests the ECM to do so. The TCM is located outside the transmission assembly. It is notserviceable with the exception of reprogramming.Transmission InputsTransmission Range Sensor6R140 uses a Non-contacting Pulse Width Modulated Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) that provides a dutycycle signal for each position. This signal is transmitted at a frequency of 125 Hz. The PCM / TCM decode the dutycycle to determine the driver-selected gear position (Park, Rev, Neutral, OD, 3, 2, 1). This input device is checkedfor frequency out of range (P0706), duty cycle out of range low (P0707) and duty cycle out of range high (P0708)Speed SensorsThe Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor are Hall effect sensors. The Turbine Shaft Speed sensor is monitored by a rationality test, if engine speed and output shaft speed are highand a gear is engaged, it can be inferred that the vehicle is moving. If there is insufficient output from the TSSsensor a fault is stored (P0715).The Output Shaft Speed sensor is monitored by a rationality test. If engine speed and turbine speed are high and agear is engaged, it can be inferred that the vehicle is moving. If there is insufficient output from the OSS sensor afault is stored (P0720).Transmission Fluid TemperatureThe Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor is checked for out of range low (P0712), out of range high (P0713),and in-range failures (P0711).FORD MOTOR COMPANY REVISION DATE: FEBRUARY 9, 2012 09.01.00.02-PAGE 151 OF 157
