The Real Dealat the Galway Film FleadhRadisson Hotel · Thursday 8 JulyA Morning Debate…10.30 - 13.00WHAT’S YOUR STORY? AND WHY?This year the morning session of the Real Deal will follow the same formatas last year – a free-for-all, round table debate among producers andanyone working in independent film – but instead of talking about thebusiness we shall debate the films themselves, the content without whichthere would be no business. As filmgoers, it’s easy enough to say why we pick one film to see ratherthan another, at the risk of losing two hours of our time if we choosewrong. But what informs our choices as filmmakers, when the investmentat risk is vastly greater? Are we impulsive or calculating? Instinctive, innovative, or imitative? What is the audience that we – you – really wantto please? Your peers and compatriots? Critics and cinephiles at filmfestivals? The masses at home and abroad? Do you want your work toexcite and entertain people, or to move and engage them? With the honesty of the confessional, participants in the debate willdescribe what works for them in terms of the films they make, and howthat compares with what works in the market. We shall discuss genre, adaptation, auteurism, 3-D, edginess and happy endings – and how, perhaps, our choices are changing in the face of new realities.Chaired by Simon Perry, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film BoardPresented by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Boardin association with Ateliers du Cinéma Européen (ACE)
