Andrew Vickery17 May – 14 JuneNew body of paintings anda projection by this DublinbasedDevon artist.Andrew Vickery’s paintings arenever what they seem...

This exhibition comprises a seriesof paintings, photographed andmade into a slide projection, backprojectedinto a model theatreand accompanied by music. The exhibition will consist of aslide projection and the series ofpaintings used to make the slideprojection. The paintings are painted largelyfrom memory and function asindividual mnemonic devicesrecollecting specifi c personalexperiences and events. Whenpresented as a slide projection, their collectivity becomes thefocus and the viewer is invited toparticipate in creating a narrative.Andrew Vickery’s paintings arenever what they seem. Theirdeceptively simple approach todepiction invites the viewer into aworld of enchantment, romance, sex and escape. His images blurdistinctions between memory andimagination, between what is truel–r: Andrew Vickery, untitled, gouache on cardboard, 30cm x 45cmand what is false, creating almosttimeless worlds of experiencethrough the use of narratives andthe explicit use of illusion.Born in Devon in 1963, Vickerynow lives and works in Dublin. He studied at University of Ulster(MFA) and Ealing College, London(BAHons. Modern EuropeanStudies). Recent exhibitions includesolo shows at the Royal HibernianAcademy and in the Douglas HydeGallery 2. Group shows includethe Crawford Open 2007 and theFenton Gallery, Cork: 25 Years On,Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast,2006; Permaculture, ProjectGallery, 2003; The Holiday Show,RHA Gallery, 2002 and Utopias,Douglas Hyde Gallery, 1999.Andrew Vickery’s work isrepresented in numerous privateand public collections including theIrish Museum of Modern Art and theOffi ce of Public Works.

The Plinian Sponge, maybe?1 August - 30 AugustAn exhibition of contemporarypaintings by 16 artists.‘The painting is dead’ debate hasraged from the discovery of the fi rstcamera obscura.

Royal Hibernian Academy’sAshford Gallery co-ordinator MarkSt. John Ellis has curated anexciting exhibition of contemporarypainting that will tour to fourvenues including West Cork ArtsCentre in August. Entitled ThePlinian Sponge, maybe? thisexhibition refl ects the eclecticism ofcontemporary painting in Ireland. The 16 exhibiting artists show anartistic knowledge and attitude thatis in step with international practice. The artists are Anne Hendrick,Ann Quinn, Cara Thorpe, ClaireKerr, Colin Martin, Eoin O’Connor,Graham Chorlton, Graham Crowley,John Beattie, Jonathan Hunter,Kate Warner, Laura Brennan, LedaScully, Phillipa Sutherland, RossMcDonnell and Thomas Brezing. The title of the exhibition ThePlinian Sponge, maybe? wasinspired by a quote from DeDisciplinis by Juan Luis Vives, referring to the ancient Romanphilosopher Pliny the Elder: ‘Thosethings that happen at random or bychance are not done by art – as,for example, the picture of a horsefoaming at the mouth, which wasthe result of the painters’ havingthrown a sponge at the picture in afi t of anger.’Curator Mark St. John Ellis exploresthe old Academic perception ofpainting as an arduous and lengthyprocess versus the spontaneity ofthe modern painting movement.Artist and viewer are now dealingwith the randomness and chanceof the drip, the splash, the smudge, the sanding back and paring backof the paint, the different texturesand fi nishes, the use of too little ortoo much oil in one painting, thelack of paint stability and conformityon another canvas.‘The painting is dead’ debate hasraged from the discovery of the fi rstcamera obscura. This exhibitionillustrates that today’s painters usetechniques that reference the wholehistory of painting. Also included inthe exhibition are 2 DVD and 1 slideprojection works by John Beattieexploring the process of painting.l-r, Philippa Sutherland, angmagssalik, oil on canvas, 2007 and John Beattie, untitled process, 80 35mm slidesin carousel & slide projector dvd, 2004
