Evaluate Basic External Animal Anatomy and MorphologyPrimary Agriculture NQF Level 1 Unit Standard No: 11617332 HabitatLocusts are land living insects. They feed on green plants and can causegreat damage when they form big swarms.A swarm consists of very large numbers of locusts. Body divisionThe body can be divided into three definite regions:• The head• The thorax and• The abdomen. The exoskeletonThe body wall is the exoskeleton, which consists mainly of a waterproof,non- elastic substance called chitin. The exoskeleton is thin and hardexcept in a few specific places, namely between the segments of theabdomen and in the leg joints. Movement is possible at these points.Because the exoskeleton is non-elastic, the locust has to moult (shed) inorder to grow. The headThe head is oval in shape and has the following features:• The antennae (feelers)At the top of the head in the front is a pair of feelers. They serve as organs of touch and smell.• The eyesTwo large, compound eyes are very conspicuous: there is one on eitherside of the head. They enable the animal to distinguish between lightand darkness and more importantly to see moving objects.Three simple eyes look like small black spots between the compoundeyes - one on each side (above the base of each feeler), and one in thecentre of the head.• MouthpartsThe locust has biting mouthparts and uses them to eat leaves and partsof plants.Version: 01 Version Date: July 2006
