They live indiverse habitats <strong>and</strong> some even migrate (travel long distances before winter starts towarmer areas) to escape bad climatic conditions. Birds vary a lot in size as well ashabitat. Their habitats range from cold, Antarctic water, to the tropics. Some areadapted for living at sea, while others, like the ostrich, are adapted for hot, dryclimates on l<strong>and</strong>. Most birds’ fore limbs develop into wings <strong>and</strong> are used to propelthe animal through the air. Some birds are true terrestrial animals <strong>and</strong> have lost theability of flight. They live on l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> sometimes on both l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> water. Some birdsdevelop an ability to swim well, like ducks.There is a vast variety of birds. We shall study the pigeon as an example, becausethey are widespread <strong>and</strong> common.The Pigeon HabitatPigeons are found wherever there is a place that provides sufficient coverfor them. They are found in mountains, on rocky ledges, among buildings<strong>and</strong> in trees. They build simple nests with twigs. Body coverThe pigeon’s body is covered with feathers.
