The trunkThe trunk is the broadest part of the body. The trunk narrows graduallyinto the tail. The following body parts are found on the trunk.• The limbsThey are short <strong>and</strong> attached to the sides of thebody. The front limbs consist of an upper arm <strong>and</strong>a forearm with a h<strong>and</strong> with five fingers. The hindlimbs consist of a thigh, a shin <strong>and</strong> foot with fivetoes. Both the fingers as well as the toes end insharp claws.• The cloacae The tailThe opening of the cloacae (external opening of the digestive <strong>and</strong>urinary tracts) is on the underside at the end of the abdomen.The tail is cylindrical <strong>and</strong> gradually narrows to a point. ReproductionThe lizard is unisexual <strong>and</strong> its fertilisation is internal (inside the body) aftermating. The female lays a few oval white eggs, which are hatched by theheat of the sun. However, there are some lizards whose eggs developinside the body of the female. When they are fully developed they are laid,<strong>and</strong> the young break through the thin enclosing membranes. These lizardsare ovoviviparous (they develop in the mother <strong>and</strong> the eggs are laid <strong>and</strong>hatched outside the body).
