בס ‏“דPage 6 Congregation Beit Tikvah of Ottawa - High Holy Days 5769June 3, 2008 marked a momentous occasion in our shul’s life when we officially voted to becomeCongregation Beit Tikvah of Ottawa at our Annual General Meeting. Over 100 members of our congregationattended this meeting to witness the final steps to our independence and to cast their votes. Thank you toPast Co-Chairs Golda Feig and Daniel Wolfish for all of their efforts that after several years of negotiationsfinally brought us to the point when current President, Ian Kagedan could bring us through the last stages. Aswe near 30 years as a congregation, may this new beginning bring this community, OUR community, thehope of a fruitful future together.Jewish Memorial Gardens Cemetery ReportJuly 8, 2008 marked a special day in the Ottawa JewishCommunity as representatives of six congregations cametogether to create a new corporation to be known asJewish Memorial Gardens (JMG). Beit Tikvah wasrepresented by both our President, Ian Kagedan and meas the congregation’s Ottawa Jewish CemeteryCommittee representative. This agreement was theculmination of 3 years of discussions and negotiations ledby Roger Greenberg. The new corporation will administer the two Jewishcemeteries in Ottawa. The founding members havetransferred their respective ownership in the lands of theOttawa Jewish cemeteries to the JMG but maintain asignificant and substantial degree of control over the useand disposition of these lands. The corporation is currently being governed by its boardof directors. The board is composed of onerepresentative from each of Agudath Israel, MachzikeiHadas, Temple Israel, Young Israel and Beit Tikvah. BethShalom will have 3 representatives for the first 5 years, 2representatives for the next 5 years and 1 representativethereafter. In addition, 3 representatives are appointed bythe Jewish Federation of Ottawa. It is expected that the JMG will be administered by a paiddirector expected to be in place this Fall. The board ofdirectors is currently accepting applications for thisposition. The board is in the process of developing acomprehensive policy to be followed for the purpose ofacquiring an interment right in the cemetery. This isexpected to be in place this Fall as well.As a part our disengagement from Congregation BethShalom we acquired the interment rights to a section ofthe Bank Street cemetery composed of 107 plots. Thiswas our contribution to the founding of the JMG.The long term goal of the JMG is to have a system in placethat will assist the bereaved family in making all thenecessary arrangements for the funeral with one phonecall.Eric WeisbloomVOLUNTEER APPRECIATION CORNERIt is a fact that, as a non-profit organization, we cannot survive without volunteers. Beit Tikvah is proud tobe the recipient of the time and energy that is tirelessly delivered, often without solicitation, from ourKiddush volunteers, Shabbat and Yom Tov Door Monitors, Daveners, Phoning Committee members, Boardand Executive Committee members and countless individuals who represent our shul at communitymeetings or who have opened their homes for meals, accommodations and laundry. Our volunteers go theextra mile to make sure we are comfortable, fed, welcomed, supported, appreciated, secure, educated, anda part of this community.THREE CHEERS FOR VOLUNTEERS!
