Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeTwenty years ago, Marianne Wilson saw a need; thousandsof people with critical illnesses were going hungry in her area ofSouthern California, and she just wasn't going to stand for it. Shebegan cooking healthy meals and delivering them to men, womenand children dying from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other diseases atno cost to the recipients. Today, the organization is known asProject Angel Food, and every year produces over 400,000 mealsand delivers them to more than 1,600 people. On its Web site, itsays, "We act out of a sense of urgency because hunger andillness do not wait."It had been barely twenty-four hours since the miracle of theloaves and fishes; thousands had found nourishment. Jesus andhis disciples had crossed the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, andstill many in the crowd from the day before found him, wantinganother miracle. But Jesus offered them and us a greater miracle;if we are only to believe in the Son of God, we will never hungeragain. Our faith is our work; this work will be generouslyrewarded. In the Lord's Prayer we pray "Give us this day our dailybread." Fully understanding today's Gospel reading from Johnenables us to comprehend the dual meaning of this petition: ourbodies will hunger, please provide nourishment, and our soulshunger, please provide through our faith the bread of life that isfaith in Jesus Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Churchteaches us that "the drama of hunger in the world calls Christianswho pray sincerely to exercise responsibility toward theirbrethren, both in their personal behavior and in their solidaritywith the human family" (CCC 2831).SUNDAY, August 28:00 am - 1:00 pm ~ Blood Drive ~ GymMONDAY, August 37:00 pm Blue Army ~ Chapel7:00 pm Parish Life ~ Conference Room7:00 pm Vocation Committee ~ Teachers’ LoungeTUESDAY, August 45:00 pm - 6:00 pm ~ Market Day Pick-up ~ Gym9:15 am - 6:30 pm ~ Eucharistic Adoration ~ Chapel1:00 pm Prayer/Vocations ~ Chapel6:00 pm Divine Mercy Chaplet ~ ChapelWEDNESDAY, August 5THURSDAY, August 6FRIDAY, August 7SATURDAY, August 88:00 am - 2:00 pm ~ Boy Scout Car Wash ~ North Lot10:00 am Oblates ~ Conference RoomSUNDAY, August 92:30 pm Padre Pio Cenacle ~ ChapelP lease pray for the sick of our parish....Coleen AlexanderMargaret AmatulliCurt AnglinDoris AurelioMaria AurelioIrene BakerCody BaldwinAntonio BelmonteTom BernackeMichael BerryMichael BlazevichDiane BochnowskiMichael BostonCheryl BostromArthur BrancoStephany BurneyDorothy CampbellJames CampbellLorraine CaparelliAl CarolloCarol CarolloKathleen CecilJacqueline MorrowChristianFrank ComanVincent CorselloMike CurtainIrene DettmerIrene DickeyDavid DrewniakMadeline DunnMarian DzurovsakJohn FetzkoSr. Beatrice FlahavenElizabeth FollmerJohn FordePhyllis GarberAndrea GarritanoJoseph GasiorekDorothy GillespieHoward GralewskiJames GrunewaldAmy HayesEleanore HeggiMarie HenkeEvelyn HennesRay HumpferSteve IzzoDennis JablonskiElizabeth JacobEmery JohnsDebbie KaczkaRobert KalkaMargaret A. The Pastor’s PageAUGUSTAugust is the eighth month, renamed by the Romans fromSextilis, meaning sixth, to honor their emperor, Augustus. It is also the height of summer in the temperate zone of theNorthern Hemisphere. The longest days of the year are past, but hot daysremain. In the northern regions and mountains, cool nights andearly frosts lets one know that the summer is about to cometo an end. In the Southern Hemisphere, August means thewinter will soon be over.Birds are already planning to fly south for the winter.Insects are more noisy and numbered than in any othermonth. This is also the month that most people take vacations. For us at St. Thomas More, this month is extremely busy. Our maintenance and custodial staff is in “ultra-high gear”as they work to prepare the building for another school year. You may not know this, but every summer all the tiled floorsare stripped and waxed, all the rooms are thoroughlycleaned, the entire building is cleaned and inspected. Thisis a tough job for several reasons. Summer heat inbuildings without air conditioning makes for a very hot job.Festival and Vacation Bible School mean that many areashave to wait to be cleaned. Teachers coming in to preparetheir classrooms early also push the crews.Additionally, the staff — especially our summer crewmade up of collegians — begins to look at the time that theirnumbers will be reduced when our college students returnto their schools. This summer, the job became tougher as we workedaround the schedule of the parking lot job which includeddemolition and re-pouring of a few entrances to our building, thus tracking in dirt and debris. The summer also is a time for several new families tocome to our school to register for the new school year. These people often move into the area during the summeror decide to change schools for other reasons. So, the “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” are far fromthat. They may be “crazy,” but they are hardly lazy! Will our building be ready for occupancy again for the newschool year? Sure. And it will all be due to a very hard working maintenanceand custodial staff.Thank you very much, staff, for your veryhard work this summer!KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SUPREME CONVENTIONThis week I am attending the Supreme Convention of theKnights of Columbus. Those of you who know me quite well will be able to havequite a laugh at my sake. After all, many of you know that Ilike the cooler weather. Well, the convention takes place inPhoenix, Arizona. I understand it is a dry heat. ☺Anyway, please keep the work of the Knights of Columbusin your prayers. And men, if you are not a Knight yet, youmight want to consider becoming one!CONFESSION TIMES — KINDLY REMEMBERBeginning the first of July, confessions are now heard onSaturdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.Please make sure that you adjust your coming to churchaccordingly. Many thanks!ON THE LIGHTER SIDESchool begins again in a couple of weeks. Maybe it istime to reflect on some questions/answers provided bystudents around the country:Teacher: George Washington not only chopped down hisfather's cherry tree, but also admitted it.
