The Gift of Life
Kenai Peninsula medical community
supports new paramedic program
T
he opportunity to put together a degree-level paramedic
program was a dream come true for Paul Perry, a 22-year
paramedic and longtime course instructor.
And it was a fortunate day for the state in November 2004 when
representatives from Kenai Peninsula College and Central Emergency
Services approached Perry about adding a new associate’s degree in
Paramedical Technology to the University of Alaska system.
“When they came to me, I don’t think they knew we were going to
have to rewrite the program,” Perry said. “Basically, we rewrote the
entire UAA paramedic curriculum based on the federal DOT
curriculum.”
But just nine months after that inaugural conversation, the first class
of eight men and seven women started class on Aug. 29 at the Kenai
Peninsula College’s Kenai River Campus. Perry is the primary instructor
for the new program.
The degree-level paramedical program is the first of its kind in the
state and is already building a national reputation for excellence,
he said.
“We had to do something that would draw our people here rather than
sending them out to Denver and other paramedic programs,” he said.
Kenai Peninsula College Director Gary Turner said without the help
of regional and community organizations the college couldn’t offer
paramedical training.
“We have had an unbelievable response in bringing this program to
life,” he said.
Train Alaskans
to teach Emergency Medical Technician I, EMT II and EMT III classes
In Alaska, there are roughly 40 open positions for paramedics, Perry and start the paramedic training.
said. In fact, it’s part of the nationwide health care shortage, he added. Maybe that’s why Nikiski was the first fire department to donate
But in the Last Frontier, high demand is compounded by cold, dark equipment and offer students the chance to get hands-on experience
winters that stretch half the year.
riding along on real-life emergency calls.
Next, Central Emergency Services stepped up to
help and the college purchased new paramedic
equipment for the class, including a state-of-the-art
SimMan Manikin, which includes features like blood
pressure, lung sounds and 2,500 different cardiac
rhythms.
But still missing was an ambulance for students to
use in training, Perry said.
That’s when now-retired Nikiski Fire Chief Dan
Gregory approached Perry about donating one of the
department’s surplus ambulances.
As a former manager, Gregory said he knows firsthand
the difficulties of hiring and retaining qualified
paramedics.
“We’ve hired different people and it doesn’t always
work out,” he said. “The lifestyle is so different here.”
That’s why he pushed to donate one of Nikiski’s
surplus ambulances to the program, he said.
Austin McLeod,Aliesha Christner, Zack Schindler and Mike Oliver log-roll Heather Perry after strapping
her to a long spine board. Spinal immobilization is one of 26 EMT-1 skills students must master.
“We have a lot of talent here locally,” Gregory said.
“We just needed a training outlet.”
KPC director Turner said talks with the emergency services community
on the Kenai Peninsula suggested a solution: Train Alaskans in
emergency medicine.
Previously, people seeking degree-level paramedical training had to
leave the state, he said.
Now the tide has turned and Alaskans are returning home to
complete their paramedic training.
One student in the first class had moved his family from Alaska to
Oregon to get his paramedical degree. But they were able to move
home thanks to the opportunity to complete an associate’s degree in
paramedical technology in state, Perry said.
Another classmate, who lives in Delaware, heard about the program
and called Perry to ask about enrolling. He filled the last slot in this
year’s class.
“Our goal is to put together
the top-quality paramedic
program in the country.”
— Paul Perry
Perry said having an ambulance to use for training will add depth
to students’ skills.
In part, it is Zoll Medical Corp.’s donation of a $32,000 cardiac
monitor that is turning heads nationally.
“It’s the Cadillac of cardiac monitoring and emergency cardiac
resuscitation,” Perry said.
Turner said one of his goals in building the program from the
ground up was to create a program that would graduate students ready
for work.
“Our goal is to put together the top-quality paramedic program in the
country,” he said. “When we graduate a student, and they go to work, we
want the business to say, ‘Yep, that student has the skills we need.’”
What’s required
Students who apply to the program face some of the toughest
entrance criteria in the nation, Perry said.
Still with just 30 days to apply last year, some 20 people vied for
the program’s 15 slots. Perry said he expects that number to reach as
high as 100 in the next year.
To apply, students must be current EMTs, complete two semesters
of college-level anatomy and physiology with labs, pass a federal
background check, entrance exam, and complete an oral interview.
General education requirements for the associate’s degree also include
English, math and communications credits.
Perry said students must complete all of the program’s other
requirements before they can register for the final out-of-state ridealong
component.
The degree program already has earned approval from the
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
Besides class time and ride-alongs, students also will spend time
Naomi Rice and Liz Parson use the state-of-the-art SimMan Manikin to practice a full
cardiac arrest scenario. They start by using CPR and basic airway management techniques,
and then move into advanced level skills, such as intravenous placement, intubation,
manual defibrillation and medication administration.
weekly in clinical rotation at Anchorage’s three hospitals as well
as the Soldotna hospital and the Kenai Medicenter, Perry said.
“These students will spend a large amount of time – at least
one day a week – in a hospital room treating real patients,”
he said.
In the final phase of the training, students travel to the Lower
48 where they will work for two months with ambulance
companies in Oregon and Texas as paramedics.
“When they come home, they’ll take their tests for licensure
and we’ll have some of the best paramedics in the state,” Perry
said. “There is no doubt in my mind.”
While still cheaper than other places in the country, students
still should expect to spend $10,000 completing the paramedic
part of their degree, he said.
Turner said, in his three years as director of the Kenai College,
he’s never seen such a huge outpouring of support.
“They see that there is a need, and they open up their wallets
and their hearts,” he said. “We have an unbelievable list of
donations and equipment.”
eorge Harper’s one-of-a-kind collection documenting
the history of African Americans in Alaska will
be permanently housed in the archives and manuscripts
section of the Consortium Library on the campus of the
University of Alaska Anchorage.
Harper, president and co-founder of the Blacks in
Alaska History Project Inc., was the first person known to
make a systematic attempt to document the history of
blacks in Alaska.
“It’s a unique collection,” said Steve Rollins, dean of
the Library. “George had this in his will. He’d planned for
this. We inherited it as part of his estate planning.”
This year, Harper's Blacks in Alaska's Past Exhibit:
“Blacks in the Gold Rush” was on display around
Anchorage during Black History Month in February.
Rollins said he plans to use Harper’s collection to put
George Harper
together other exhibits about African American’s
contributions to Alaska history.
“This is a very good example of how
someone can contribute to the university
without what most people think of as a
donation – cash,” Rollins said.
The archive includes records, photographs,
exhibits, reference materials and
other papers documenting the activities of Harper and the Blacks in Alaska
History Project in bringing to light African American’s role in Alaska
history. The George Harper Photograph Collection alone includes more than
1,000 prints and negatives.
Harper was born in Atlanta, Ga. in 1930 and died in Anchorage Jan. 21,
2004, at the age of 73.
He graduated from high school in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1948; before
joining the U.S. Navy. Harper received a bachelor of science degree from
Chase College in 1960 and then pursued a career in computer programming.
Harper first visited Alaska in 1980, and he later moved to Anchorage in
1981. He worked as a computer programmer for the Bureau of Land
Management until his retirement in 1992. During retirement, Harper spent
most of his time and money working for the nonprofit Blacks in Alaska
History Project, which he co-founded in 1995.
He created his first Black History Month exhibit in 1989, and for its 50th
anniversary in 1992, Harper created an exhibit honoring Black U.S. Army
Engineers who constructed the Alaska Highway during World War II.
His research also rediscovered Captain Michael Healy’s contribution to
people in the United States had heard of Captain Michael Morris Healy.
Healy was born in September 1839 on a plantation across the
Michael Morris Healy, who emigrated from Ireland to Georgia in 1818,
Healy sailed Alaska’s waters for more than 20 years. He was the
captain of Coast Guard Revenue Cutter Bear from 1886 to 1895.
In 1890, it was Healy who proposed to Dr. Sheldon Jackson,Territorial
Commissioner of Education, transporting reindeer to Alaska from Siberia
to provide food and hide for clothing for Alaska Natives.
The next year, using his own money, Healy transported 16 reindeer
were added and Teller Reindeer Station was established.
A
“For a first year program, speech-language pathology has been
Anchorage and East Carolina University has increased access to incredibly successful,” Snyder said. “I’m very supportive of this
treatment for the estimated 13,000 Alaskan schoolchildren with speech program.”
and other communications difficulties.
Advances in distance delivery technologies make the long-distance
The innovative speech-language pathology program aims to erase partnership possible, Coe said. After reviewing the Web sites of
Alaska’s historic shortage of speech-language pathologists by
dozens of university speech-language pathology programs, several
providing a way for people – including those in rural locations – were chosen for phone interviews.
to get training in state.
Whether students live in Anchorage, Anvik or Arctic UAA partners to meet Alaska’s need
Speech-language pathology is the study and treatment
of a wide variety of communication disorders,
ranging from organic disorders such as stuttering to
communication problems derived from brain injuries.
In its first year, four students from Alaska and 10
from East Carolina enrolled in the online program. The
university’s College of Education staff worked with the
Alaska Department of Education and Early
Development to develop and fund the innovative
training program.
Still, demand is so high that UAA is partnering with
a second university to provide more opportunities for
Alaska students to receive training.
“While ECU is accepting a significant number of
students, we need an additional university program to
meet all the demands,” said Carolyn Coe, an assistant
Nolting named Goldwater Scholar
Math major is Alaska’s third student
to receive the prestigious award
U
niversity of Alaska Anchorage Goldwater Scholar Ben Nolting
may be as humble as he is brilliant.
He is the third UAA student in the past six years to receive the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The prestigious scholarship is
awarded to students annually for outstanding achievement in the fields
of engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences.
“My scholarship is more a reflection on the outstanding quality of
the entire UAA math department than it is an individual achievement,”
Nolting said.
The prestigious national award is one of several scholarships
Nolting has received that provide him the opportunity to study math at
the university level.
Associate professor of mathematics at UAA Dr. Kamal Narang
said in almost 25 years of teaching he’s only had two students of
Nolting’s caliber in terms of talent, dedication, and willingness
to learn.
“This achievement not only brings well-deserved recognition to
Ben, but also to the UAA mathematics program,”
Nolting is the second student from the UAA math department to be
named a Goldwater Scholar. The first was Craig Jackson, who won a
scholarship six years ago at UAA and is now earning his doctorate at
the University of Chicago. UAA’s Alissa Pempek also received the
Goldwater in 2003 for her work in the area of geomatics.
Nolting said he owes the entire math department a great deal of
thanks, but one professor stands out.
“Dr. Kamal Narang was the person who encouraged me to apply
and helped me through the application process,” he said.
Narang said it is difficult for math majors like Nolting to win a
Goldwater Scholarship because they have to show strong evidence of
undergraduate research.
Of the 320 students selected on the basis of academic merit for the
2005-06 academic year, only 27 are math majors. Selected from a field
of 1,091 applicants, the scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees,
books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
To win the scholarship, Nolting also had to write a paper outlining
his plan for future research on the new homotopy analysis method in
nonlinear dynamics and how it can be refined to be a better tool
for scientists.
The Barry M. Goldwater Excellence in Education Foundation is a
federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 in 1986.
The scholarship program honors Sen. Goldwater and was designed to
foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the
fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The
Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type
in these fields. Over the last 17 years, the foundation has awarded
4,562 scholarships worth approximately $45 million.
Awards are granted on the basis of academic merit, research experience,
and letters of recommendation. Applicants also must submit a
paper outlining a plan for future research in their area of expertise.
“My scholarship is more a
reflection on the outstanding
quality of the entire UAA
math department than it is
an individual achievement”
– Ben Nolting
Students who apply for the scholarship must be at least sophomores
and plan to obtain doctoral degrees. Nolting said he plans to pursue a
doctorate in applied mathematics with an emphasis in nonlinear
dynamics. His eventual goal is to conduct research and to teach at a
university, he said.
The University of Alaska Scholar also was selected as a member of
the 2005 undergraduate research team at the Penn State Center for
Mathematical Biology. He spent the summer in Erie, Pa., working
with Drs. Joseph Previte and Joseph Paullet of Penn State University
on research in biological population modeling.
Nolting, a 2000 graduate of Colony High School, also won a
$10,000 Toyota Scholars Program scholarship that year.
n 1941, a forester in a remote
mountain valley of China’s
Szechwan province stumbled across a
living relic — a 450-year-old dawn
redwood, a delicate conifer previously
known only by ancient fossils and
thought to be extinct for nearly 20
million years.
Through a gift by Anchorage
entrepreneur and tree lover Matt Jones,
visitors to the UAA campus now can
get a taste of that forester’s surprise
and delight. The co-owner of the
Moose’s Tooth Brewpub and the Bear
Tooth Theatrepub, Jones recently
donated two dawn redwoods —
together with 266 other trees from 26
beautiful, unusual and interesting
Pat Leary and Matt Jones
species and varieties — to be planted
on and around the UAA campus.
Jones said his love of trees stems largely from his
extensive travels through the United States and Canada.
“I’ve always been interested in what trees grow where,” he
explained. “Traveling through the Rockies and up through British
Columbia, for example, you see lots of trees in similar ecosystems that
should be able to grow here, without becoming invasive nuisances.”
The owner of an 80-acre tree farm near Sutton, Jones regularly
places orders for new trees he wants to “experiment” with, testing
their viability in Alaska’s soil and climate. When he realized he would
have extra seedlings on his hands this year, he thought of UAA.
“You look at other universities around the country, especially on the
East Coast, and you’re really struck by the great old trees they have
around campus,” he said. “Having those grand, stately old trees —
some of them 100, 150 years old — really adds something to the campuses
and the communities that I think has been missing up here to a
certain extent.”
Jones’ trees will be added to the 54 species and varieties that
already make the UAA campus the most species-diverse public land
in Alaska.
Tree lover donates to UAA’s landscape
“We love our trees, no doubt about it,” said Pat Leary, UAA’s
landscaping horticulture supervisor. “The first reason, obviously, is to
beautify the campus. Planting a nice, wide variety of trees is one of
the best ways to do that. But beyond that, we like our trees to serve an
educational purpose as well. Tree lovers from all over come here to
take ‘tree tours’ of our campus. Our trees turn the university itself into
a giant classroom.”
Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Abies balsamea. Artemisia Cana.
The names are as a beautiful as the trees they describe: the dawn redwoods,
balsam firs, silver sage brush and other species and varieties of
trees Jones gifted added to UAA’s living, growing collection.
Interested in learning more? Visitors may arrange for a “tree tour” of
UAA by contacting Pat Leary, landscaping horticulture supervisor, at
Sponsored by the Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula
College, campus and program director Carol Swartz first organized the
conference in 2002 at the Land’s End Resort. The campus is one of
several sites that are part of the University of Alaska Anchorage system.
“Our campus could not have organized and sponsored such a
literary and community event attended by individuals from throughout
Alaska and the Lower 48 without the tremendous generosity of the
many local and statewide businesses and agencies,” Swartz wrote in a
thank-you letter to the editor of the Homer News. She described the
writer’s conference as a major educational, cultural and economic
development event that reflects the mission of the Kachemak Bay
Campus-Kenai Peninsula College-UAA.
It takes about $60,000 to offer the conference each summer,
Swartz said.
“The need for support is a real struggle every year,” she said.
“People can help by contributing to the campus’ Carolyn Musgrove
specify that the gift should go to fund the writers’ conference,”
Swartz said.
awson Moore was a student at the University of Alaska
Anchorage the first time he attended the Last Frontier Theatre
Conference at Prince William Sound Community College in Valdez
in 1995.
Moore participated in the conference first as a student whose play
was picked to be read in Play Lab. He also had several of his plays
staged at the conference and has acted in countless others. Moore has
received the best play award and the Patricia Neal Acting Award.
Now he’s the coordinator for the internationally known theatre
conference.
About 400 people attended this year’s eight-day conference of
playwriting and acting workshops.
It’s a chance for people who write plays to blossom into
playwrights, Moore said. And it’s a chance for likeminded
professionals to network, he said.
Moore began working as part of the event’s staff in 2003, when he
coordinated a slate of staged readings, followed by public discussions,
known as Play Labs. This year, more than 200 plays were submitted
from nearly every state and as far away as France, Israel, and
Australia. Of those, 76 scripts were picked for the Play Lab.
Doug Desorcie, president of Prince William Sound Community
College, said putting on the eight-day theater conference wouldn’t be
possible without the support of the state’s arts and business
communities. The budget for this year’s conference was
approximately $280,000.
Elaine Maimon, chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage,
said fund-raising for this year’s conference was the most successful
ever, exceeding all expectations.
“The conference definitely justifies the efforts of all concerned,”
she said. “The educational community is committed to this special
opportunity for emerging playwrights to find a voice.”
ince graduating from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1981, Robert G.
Wedemeier has given back to the university system in a number of ways.
He helped pull together the alumni awards program, served on the alumni board,
and hosted the first community breakfast with the chancellor.
“I give because the university was very, very good to me,” Wedemeier said.
When he attended the Anchorage
campus, he was married and working
fulltime. In those days, he said he
didn’t have much extra money or
time to share with the university.
“Now I have the opportunity to
give back,” he said. “I can afford to
do a little bit more and I don’t mind
contributing.”
Wedemeier also played a role in
the new Patricia James Memorial
Scholarship that will be offered to a
history student. So far, he said there
is about $40,000 in the fund.
Over the years, Wedemeier’s gifts
to the university have taken many
forms. Like working to build
endowments, volunteering his personal
time and giving cash to
Michael Friess’ cross-country and
track and field programs at UAA.
“I try to help out a little bit here
and there,” Wedemeier said. “But
Robert G.Wedemeier every little bit helps.”
Although he lives in Maryland
now, Wedemeier has deep ties to
Alaska. His mother was born in Flat,
Alaska – better known as Iditarod –
and he was born in Fairbanks, and his daughters were born in Anchorage.
Although he is a long way from home, the education he received here continues to
benefit him, Wedemeier said.
“Education is the one thing that nobody can take away from you,” he said.
Wedemeier encouraged everyone to take advantage of educational opportunities
offered.
The University of Alaska honored Wedemeier in 1992 with the University Service
Award and in 1987 he received the Alumni Recognition Medal.
Why Give? By Jo Michalski
My husband and I believe in giving back to our community and we
believe we can make a difference through our private gifts.
We both give to our alma maters out of state, but we feel strongly
about also investing in our community here by supporting our public
university. We believe a strong university stimulates economic
development, ensures a talented workforce for today and tomorrow,
and inspires lifelong learning in our community.
The University of Alaska Anchorage provides affordable education
and encourages our kids to study in Alaska. State funding provides for
the basics — private funding can bring excellence. It can enhance
student scholarships and opportunities, foster excellence in academic
programs and allow the university to offer students a rich
campus environment.
Our contributions also make financial sense. Donors understand
the benefits of giving to public, nonprofit institutions, and employ
sound philanthropic strategy to maximize the benefits of a gift, not
only for the recipient but also for one’s own bottom line. There are
benefits beyond the good will we feel having provided opportunities
for students. It is hard to imagine feeling much better than making
the gift itself. The benefits may surprise you. An accountant can help
you maximize your gifts and enjoy tax savings.
Giving is a personal commitment. Our gift to UAA is a personal
investment in the university. And there are many ways to invest.
Support specific programs or contribute to general support, letting the
chancellor and deans invest in priority programs of strategic
importance to the University’s future. In addition, you might consider
establishing an endowment: a permanent investment earning interest
to support the purpose of the gift in perpetuity. You may do this on
your own or join with others to create a lasting gift to enhance a
program or department important to you.
