It truly represents historyunfolding before us in realtime. The Stuxnet virus was specificallydesigned to play havocwith the computers that helprun Iran’s nuclear program.Experts say that the viruswas introduced in 2009 and, although it infected computersthroughout the world, itwas specifically designed tohamstring Iran’s nuclear ambitions.According to numerousaccounts, Stuxnet has done itsjob, setting back the country’snuclear program by years. For many people, that’sthe good news. Many leaders, both in the United Statesand throughout the MiddleEast, have welcomed the delayas an opportunity to avoidwhat has euphemisticallybeen described as a “militaryoption.”There has also been aremarkable absence of anyapparent collateral damage. The designers of this virusseem to have worked painstakinglyto ensure that, althougheasily transmitted, it attacksa very specific target. World food priceshit a record in January, drivenby huge increases in the pricesof wheat, corn, sugar and oils. These soaring prices havehad only a modest effect onU.S. inflation, which is stilllow by historical standards, but they’re having a brutalimpact on the world’s poor, who spend much if not mostof their income on basic foodstuffs. The consequences of thisfood crisis go far beyondeconomics. After all, the bigquestion about uprisingsagainst corrupt and oppressiveregimes in the Middle East isn’tso much why they’re happeningas why they’re happeningnow. And there’s little questionthat sky-high food prices havebeen an important trigger forpopular rage.So what’s behind the pricespike? American right-wingers(and the Chinese) blame easymoneypolicies at the FederalReserve, with at leastone commentatordeclaring that there is“blood on Bernanke’shands.” Meanwhile,President NicolasSarkozy of Franceblames speculators, accusing them of“extortion and pillaging.”But the evidence tells a different, much more ominousstory. While several factorshave contributed to soaringfood prices, what reallystands out is the extent towhich severe weather eventshave disrupted agriculturalproduction. And these severeweather events are exactly thekind of thing we’d expect tosee as rising concentrations ofgreenhouse gases change ourclimate — which means thatthe current food price surgemay be just the beginning. Now, to some extent soaringfood prices are part of ageneral commodity boom: Theprices of many raw materials, running the gamut fromaluminum to zinc, have been risingrapidly since early2009, mainly thanksto rapid industrialgrowth in emergingmarkets. But the linkbetween industrialgrowth and demandis a lot clearer for, say, copperthan it is for food. Exceptin very poor countries, risingincomes don’t have mucheffect on how much peopleeat. It’s true that growth inemerging nations like Chinaleads to rising meat consumption, and hence rising demandfor animal feed. It’s also truethat agricultural raw materials, especially cotton, compete forland and other resources withfood crops — as does the subsidizedproduction of ethanol, which consumes a lot of corn.So both economic growth andbad energy policy have playedsome role in the food pricesurge.Still, food prices laggedbehind the prices of othercommodities until last summer. Then the weather struck.Consider the case of wheat, whose price has almost doubledsince the summer. Theimmediate cause of the wheatprice spike is obvious: worldproduction is down sharply. The bulk of that productiondecline, according to U.S.Department of Agriculturedata, reflects a sharp plunge inthe former Soviet Union. Andwe know what that’s about: arecord heat wave and drought, which pushed Moscow temperaturesabove 100 degreesfor the first time ever. The Russian heat wavewas only one of many recentextreme weather events, fromdry weather in Brazil to biblical-proportionflooding inAustralia, that have damagedworld food production. The question then becomes, what’s behind all this extremeweather? To some extent we’re seeingthe results of a natural phenomenon,La Nina — a periodicevent in which water inthe equatorial Pacific becomescooler than normal. And LaNina events have historicallybeen associated with globalfood crises, including the crisisof 2007-08.But that’s not the wholestory. Don’t let the snow foolyou: Globally, 2010 was tiedwith 2005 for warmest yearon record, even though wewere at a solar minimum andLa Nina was a cooling factorin the second half of the year.Temperature records wereset not just in Russia but inno fewer than 19 countries, covering a fifth of the world’sland area. And both droughtsand floods are natural consequencesof a warming world:droughts because it’s hotter, floods because warm oceansrelease more water vapor. As always, you can’t attributeany one weather event togreenhouse gases. But the patternwe’re seeing, with extremehighs and extreme weather ingeneral becoming much morecommon, is just what you’dexpect from climate change. The usual suspects will, ofcourse, go wild over suggestionsthat global warming hassomething to do with the foodcrisis; those who insist thatBen Bernanke has blood on hishands tend to be more or lessthe same people who insistthat the scientific consensuson climate reflects a vast leftistconspiracy. But the evidence does, infact, suggest that what we’regetting now is a first taste ofthe disruption, economic andpolitical, that we’ll face in awarming world. And given ourfailure to act on greenhousegases, there will be muchmore, and much worse, tocome.Paul Krugman is a syndicatedcolumnist with The NewYork Times and winner of the2008 Nobel Memorial Prize inEconomic Sciences. There wasn’t adefinite date or definite day,” he said. “Right now,I haven’t had a lot of contact. He’s in contact withour trainer just to let him know how he’s feelingand so forth. There really isn’t a timeframe, as faras we’re concerned at this point, of getting himback into town.”Crosby left the team last week to visit his parentsoutside of Halifax, N.S.Since he left, not only did Pittsburgh lose tothe Washington Capitals, 3-0, on Sunday, thePenguins lost center Evgeni Malkin to two tornligaments in his right knee. Malkin was injured inthe Penguins’ 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres onFriday. If there’s one franchise that isn’tused to this feeling, it’s the Steelers. Sure, they lost a Super Bowl before, but they’vewon two since and they have six in theircollection. What’s more, Roethlisberger lost hischance to join rarified air and becomeone of the few quarterbacks with threeSuper Bowl rings — think Troy Aikman,Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw.Instead, he threw two picks vs. the Packersand saw one returned for a touchdown.“I feel like I let the city of Pittsburghdown, the fans, my coaches, my teammates,”he said after the loss. The Steelers can only hope they won’thear a similar speech this offseason fromthe maligned quarterback.Roethlisberger shamed the organizationlast offseason with his behavior in aGeorgia nightclub that resulted in a sexualabuse allegation. He wasn’t prosecuted, but did earn a four-game suspension forviolating the league’s personal conductpolicy. He told the Steelers on the final drivethat he believed in them and they couldwin the game. But he could only movethem 20 yards, before turning the ball overon downs, while another one of the NFL’siconic franchises celebrated.Normally, when a topic likeRoethlisberger’s third title pops up, the oldNFL adage that “there’s always next year”would surface. But that might not be the case this year. The collective bargaining agreementexpires at the end of the day on March 3,and barring an agreement before then, owners are threatening to lock out players. Therefore, Sunday’s Super Bowl could bethe last game played this calendar year.PackersContinued from page 1Bkas jammed the team’s route, transforming the streets intohuman trenches.A house across the street fromthe stadium — Lambeau Fieldfamously sits in the middle ofa residential neighborhood— blared Queen’s “We Are TheChampions.” Fans broke outin spontaneous chants of “GoPack Go!” and “The Bears StillSuck!,” and mugged for televisionnews crews. The crowd’s cheers rose to aroar as the team’s buses nearedthe stadium. News helicoptersbuzzed overhead. Players andother team officials could beseen holding up video camerasfrom their seats, recording themoment.Craig Umentum, 29, of GreenBay, dragged a green-and-goldwagon loaded with a case ofbeer to the stadium.“The title is home, baby!”“I don’t think it’s even a ’possible lockout.’I feel that it’s something that is definitelygoing to happen,” Steelers linebackerJames Harrison said. “I hope it doesn’t,because it’s going to take a lot away fromthe fans. When it comes down to it, it’s abusiness move for (the NFL), and if it’sthe way they say it is, I don’t see any otheroption. They still will make their moneyand not have to pay anything.”If that’s not the case, and 2011-12 goeson as planned, the Steelers will return ingreat shape.Roethlisberger and receiver Hines Wardwill be back. So, too, will a young coreat the skill positions that should keepthe Steelers AFC contenders moving forward.Team president Art Rooney certainlybelieves the franchise has the right playersin place to build a Super Bowl championaround.“I feel good about our team,” he said.“We’ll go into next year feeling like we’lltake another shot at it. It takes a few daysto recover from this game, so we’ll lick ourwounds for a couple of days and then getback to work next year.”There’s plenty of blame to pass aroundfor the way this season ended, though. The Steelers were let down by a defensepicked apart by Aaron Rodgers. Harrisonand Defensive Player of the Year TroyPolamalu, the Steelers’ super safety, failedto deliver the big plays and hard hits atopportune times that had defined the season.Rodgers, the Super Bowl MVP, tookaim at the Steelers’ suspect secondary andconnected for several clutch plays.“(Green Bay’s) defense,” Polamalu said,“outplayed our defense.”The Steelers, who were not availableto the media on Monday, returned toPittsburgh without a parade to plan. Streetvendors hawking Steelers merchandiseoffered blowout sales on “last day to buy!”signs. And airport kiosks were quiet withoutany Super Bowl-champion T-shirts tosell, as shoppers lingered in novelty storeswithout the pressure to buy.At Primanti Brothers restaurant — aPittsburgh tradition that has fed many aSteeler fan — folks noshed on their pastrami-and-cheesesandwiches, paying noattention to the muted Super Bowl highlightsat a TV hanging near the counter.A silver lining for the black-and-goldfaithful is all the “Seventh Heaven” merchandisewill still be good for at leastanother year.Umentum yelled, his voice stillhoarse from screaming duringSunday night’s game. “Whoo!Where it belongs! Green Bay,baby!”Joni Hamalainen, 25, ofHelsinki, Finland, arrived inGreen Bay on Friday to watchthe game. A longtime Packersfan, he said he consideredgoing to the Super Bowl butit was too expensive. Insteadhe journeyed to Green Bay— alone — and watched thegame with hundreds of newfriends at the Stadium View Barand Grill.“It’s a dream trip,” he said ashe waited for the motorcade toarrive.Rich Winker, 42, of La Crosse, showed up in former Packerslinebacker Ray Nitchske’s No.66 jersey and a replica oldschoolPackers leather footballhelmet. He said he decided at11 p.m. Sunday to make thefour-hour drive to Green Bayon Monday.“It is awesome,” he said. “It’sCHRIS O’MEARA/The Associated PressSteelers running back Rashard Mendenhalllooks on from the sideline during the secondhalf of Super Bowl XLV against the Packerson Sunday in Arlington, Texas. The Steelerslost the game, 31-25.And linebacker James Farrior — a veteranspokesman for the defense — believedthe Steelers will be in the Super Bowl mixnext season.“I think so,” he said. “I love this group. Ithink it is a heck of a group. There is a lotmore football left in us. We just have tostay together. Hopefully, everything worksout in the offseason and we get back herenext season.”But it’s the season after Super Bowls, more than the game itself, that hasgiven the Steelers fits recently. In fact,Pittsburgh failed to make the playoffsafter each of their last two Super Bowltitles. They finished 8-8 in 2006 and 9-7in 2009.Rooney doesn’t seem worried, though.“I don’t think we’ll be sitting there sayingwe’re gonna make a lot of changes,”he said. “We’ll prepare for the draft andadd some players here and there, and beready to go.”“Seventh Heaven” still awaits.just unreal how many peopleare here. Who knows when itwill happen again?”The arrival was over quickly, though; the players didn’t makeany formal public appearanceson Monday. The real party isset for this afternoon, when thePackers are expected to stagea public rally at Lambeau.Gov. Scott Walker, who proclaimedFebruary as Green BayPackers Super Bowl championshipmonth, was expected toattend. But there’s a little hitch —Lambeau’s bleachers are coveredwith snow and ice.The team announcedMonday morning that it wouldpay people $8 an hour toremove it ahead of the celebration.Adam Shirek, 23, of Milladore, drove two hours Monday toLambeau for the parade. Hesaid he’s an unemployed collegestudent with nothing betterto do. He saw the line ofsnow volunteers at the stadiumand decided to join them.Decked out in Clay Matthews’No. 52 jersey, he attacked theice with a fury.“Could be a once-in-a-lifetimeexperience helping shovelsnow at Lambeau Field . . .after the Super Bowl,” he saidas he worked. “It will be memorable.Hopefully it’ll bring meup on the season ticket waitinglist.”Justin Spes, 31, of Green Bay,took it all in as he sipped a beerfrom Umentum’s wagon. Heremembers the Packers’ 1997Super Bowl win, but said thistime was so much sweeter. The 1997 team, led by quarterbackBrett Favre and defensiveend Reggie White, dominatedopponents. I’m not interested in thembecause I feel they are only after onething. Another problem is, when I startgetting close to a man my ownage, he always makes me feel“smothered.” It seems I’m eitherloved too much or not at all.Is there a balance, or am Ijust afraid of getting close? --AVOIDING GETTING HURT INMILWAUKEEDEAR AVOIDING: I suspectthat it’s the latter. Not all youngermen are interested in only onething. Some are, but not all.And men your age who are ready forcommitment are not “smothering” you-- but they do seem to want somethingyou are unwilling or unable to give.Unless you can determine what’sholding you back, you will remainsingle and looking. A psychologistcould help you get to the heart of thematter quickly, and that’s what I’mrecommending so I won’t hear fromyou with this same problem whenyou’re 50.DEAR ABBY: After nine years ofmarriage, my husband, “Brett,” and Iwelcomed our first child 10 monthsago. We are happy except for a problemwith Brett’s mother, “Carol.”Carol and I have had a rockyrelationship, although in recent yearsthings seem to have gotten better. My complaint (and Brett’s as well)with Carol is that she is intrusive. She always wants to be in the middleof everything and won’t ease up on“mothering” Brett. Furthermore, Carolhas decided our child should call her“Grandmommy” or “Mommy Smith.”I object to that name because I feel“Mommy” is the one name reservedThere’s always somethin’ cookin’ in the Keys!Look for the “What’s Cookin’?” Restaurant Guide in theKey West Citizen for Menu Specials, Brunch, Breakfast,NOTICE OF SALEIN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THESIXTEENTH JUDICIAL CIRCUITIN AND FOR MONROE COUNTY,FLORIDANOTICE OF FORECLOSURE-SALE BY CLERK OF THECIRCUIT COURTNotice is hereby given thatthe undersigned, DANNY L.KOLHAGE, Clerk of the CircuitCourt of Monroe County, Florida, will on the 25th day of February,2011 at 11:00 o'clock a.m., at500 WHITEHEAD STREETMONROE COUNTY, IN THE CITYOF KEY WEST, FLORIDA, offerfor sale, and sell at public outcry tothe highest and best bidder forCASH the following describedproperty situated in MonroeCounty, Florida to wit:NOTICE OF SALEThe M.V. Whenever mymom looks through our family photoalbums, she makes comments about“the good old days” while she’s lookingat the pictures taken before I was born.It offends me when I hear it, because itfeels like she’s saying the years sheremembers most fondly are the onesbefore she had me.Am I overreacting, or do thosecomments seem inappropriate to youas well? -- OUT OF THE PICTURE,LEWISTON, IDAHODEAR OUT OF THE PICTURE:When your mother looks at thephoto albums, she may be remindedof a time when she was younger, experienced less stress and had fewerresponsibilities.
