President’s Report
2009-2010
Foreword
The look of our campus has changed dramatically in the last year, but one thing that never changes is our commitment
to our students. We feel better equipped than ever before to meet the needs of a changing student population with
state-of-the-art facilities across the campus and student housing that is second to none.
My first year as president has been marked by the completion of one transitional phase, the one that has produced
two new fantastic buildings and a central campus core that has changed forever both our appearance and our ability
to provide the best available resources to our students.
We had many milestones of which we can all be proud. Our streak of enrollment increases reached an amazing
30 straight semesters. Our athletic teams enjoyed another terrific year as we brought home our second straight
NATYCAA trophy as national all-sports champions. Our students in the arts produced one thrilling stage performance
after another and a series of wonderful art shows.
Our campus hosted dozens of community events and our visitors left amazed by the changes they could see taking
place. We have had another very good year both in the classroom and in all of the many and varied activities available
to our students during the college year.
I continue to marvel at the dedication of our students, staff and faculty to making the Iowa Central experience like
no other and look forward to another great year ahead.
Transition
Completed
What began in June 2007 with the approval of an $18 million
bond issue to fund major campus upgrades has now been
realized. In three short years, Iowa Central’s core campus has
been completely and permanently changed, giving the campus
a much more fluid and cohesive look.
The visual starts with the summer 2010 completion of the
Student Resource Center (SRC), the last of the major projects
to be completed. Open to students in fall 2010, the newest
facility will house Iowa Central’s bookstore, library, student
union and bistro, among its many uses. This new building will
be a true campus hub.
One half of the 29,000-square foot building will contain the
new campus bookstore, Triton zone (bistro) and student union.
The new bright and sunny student gathering place features
an open, airy look with big windows overlooking the campus
pond to the south. It will contain large screen televisions and
a stage for coffeehouse and other performances.
The elevated half of the bi-level building will house the campus
library, formerly on the third floor of the Library Building. The
new all-access library is at the very center of campus, easily
reachable from any location on campus. In addition to an open,
roomy look with tables, chairs and couches, the library, with
wireless internet, will contain a large conference room, four
smaller study areas, the Student Success Center, 24 hard-wired
computers and laptops available for checkout.
A spacious sidewalk will circle the pond and fully connect the
pedestrian core campus. There will be 80 new parking spots available
near the newest building.
Applied Science & Technology
Building Second Floor
The Nursing floor of the Applied Science and Technology Building
underwent a major remodeling after classes dismissed in May.
New to the floor in fall 2010 will be:
1. Two Nursing classrooms with labs.
2. A Nurse Aid classroom with lab.
3. A high fidelity patient simulator lab.
4. An observation room to the patient simulator lab.
S. Two Nursing classrooms.
6. Six new faculty/staff offices.
The makeover will emphasize the nurse aid and nursing classrooms.
“During 2010-2011 the Nursing faculty will be exploring ways to
implement high fidelity patient simulation,” said Connie Boyd, dean
of health sciences.”
Bioscience and
Health Sciences Building
The BHS completed its first year as a major new addition to the
campus. In September 2009, the new campus signature building was
the subject of a major grand opening celebration featuring city, state
and national dignitaries.
United States Senator Tom Harkin, Fourth District Congressman
Tom Latham and Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge headlined a
program in which the new building was praised for its design, but
mainly for its purpose. The BHS Building is training headquarters
for Iowa Central students in Bioscience and Biotechnology, houses
a nationally recognized fuels testing lab, and is home to professional
health care services training in Radiologic Technology, Medical
Assistant and Medical Lab Technician.
The public event was also dedicated to recognizing the many people,
both public and private, without whose contributions the building
would not have become a reality.
Speakers included Iowa Central President Dr. Dan Kinney, Mark
Crimmins, president of the Board of Trustees, Judge, Latham
and Harkin. Another six area lawmakers who were present; Sen.
Jack Kibbie, Sen. Rich Olive, Sen. Daryl Beall, Rep. Helen Miller,
Rep. Dave Tjepkes, and Rep. Dolores Mertz. Also present were
representatives of the Iowa Soybean Association, Renewable
Energy Group (REG) and Iowa Department of Education.
Harkin, after touring the new facility told the large crowd, “there
is nothing like it anywhere.”
Additional Changes
• A new sign consistent in design with the new buildings on
campus, is now located at the entrance along Highway 169.
• A new sculpture entitled ‘Axiom’ (pictured on the front cover)
is located at the northeast corner of the BHS. Designed by
Cedar Falls artist Tom Stancliffe, ‘Axiom’ is the first outdoor
sculpture on campus. The design, Stancliffe said, was inspired
by the sciences and technologies taught at Iowa Central. It
was purchased with funds donated by the Catherine Vincent
Deardorf Foundation.
• The welding program, for years a fixture in the Applied Science
& Technology Building has moved to the Crimmins Center.
4 5
Biofuels Testing Lab
In the case of Iowa Central’s quality fuels testing laboratory,
there is truly nothing like it anywhere. The lab, located on
the first floor of the BHS, has received its coveted BQ-9000
accreditation through the National Biodiesel Accreditation
Commission, and is the first laboratory in the nation to do so.
“That is quite an achievement to be the first one,” said Don Heck,
director of the fuel test lab. “There are several others going
through the process but we are the first one to get there.”
The BQ-9000 program is a quality management program with
accredited producers and accredited marketers, and now with
the Iowa Central-based lab, an accredited laboratory.
“It’s important to recognize all of our partners in this. The
Iowa Biodiesel Board, National Biodiesel Board, State of
Iowa, the federal Department of Energy, and Gary Delong
of Novecta, the consultant who helped put together our BQ-
9000 program,” Heck said.

McComas Honored
Marlene McComas, Iowa Central vice president of instruction,
in November 2009 received the Recognition Award from The
Way Up, an Iowa group whose mission is defined as developing
women leaders to enhance Iowa higher education.
The Way Up is a group dedicated to assisting women in
higher education institutions as they continue to develop
their leadership and administrative skills and expertise. The
Recognition Award is presented to an individual who has
made significant contributions toward the development and
advancement of women in higher education. The 23rd annual
fall conference carried the theme-Women in Higher Education:
leading for Change.
McComas was nominated for the award by Iowa Central
colleagues Kris Nerem-Lowery, Jennifer Condon and Martha
Bailie. The following comments were drawn from their
nomination letter: “Marlene acts as an excellent steward of
the college...We trust her as faculty to act in our best interest.
We trust her as administrators to act in the best interest of the
college, and we trust her as students to guide choices and actions.
She recognizes and inspires potential in others and encourages
us to grow in our own areas of work and responsibilities.”
Our
People
While the brick and mortar portion of the transition was mostly
finished in the last year, it is only fitting we recognize a group
of people whose talents contributed for many years toward
making Iowa Central a leader among Iowa’s community colleges
regardless of appearance.
The Board of Trustees accepted the retirement resignations
of the following people; Charlene Anderson, Martha Bailie,
Jon Bakker, Larry Boyd, Dan Gogerty, Ann Hansen, Glen
Konopasek, Bill McAnally, Bill McIntyre, Dennis Pilcher, Steve
Segar, Diane Sorensen, and Craig Stripling. Together this group
accounted for more than 200 years of experience across the vast
spectrum of services provided by the college.
Though new and updated facilities are essential to help Iowa
Central keep pace with the workforce needs of this region, it’s
the people inside those buildings who make Iowa Central a
vibrant, vital and enjoyable place for students to be.
We will miss the people in this group who contributed so much
for so many years, but we continue to have a strong and dedicated
faculty, staff and administration to carry on our student-friendly
approach in the coming years.
A special thanks to this group for all they did to make Iowa
Central a better place.
Electrical Technologies
team recognized
The Iowa Central Electrical Technologies Program (formerly
Maintenance Electrician) received the Post-Secondary Program
of the Year award at the Iowa Industry and Technology
Conference in October 2009. All of the Iowa Central electrical
instructors were present to accept the award.
The program and instructors were nominated by an Iowa
Central colleague. The following paragraphs quote the
nomination letter:
((Mike Brueschke, Ed Dyvig, Troy Harris, Dan Kemnitz, Chris
Cleveland, and Scott Goodno .... all of these gentlemen comprise
the faculty for the Electrical Technologies Program at Iowa
Central. As instructors, we all have passion and vision for how our
students should be taught. It is impressive the way in which six
instructors in this program blend that vision and passion and work
together to ensure the growth and success of their students.
It is obvious that they are doing something right as they
continue to see consistent growth each year in their enrollment,
progressing from two teachers with smaller numbers years ago
to the six teachers with the 114 students they have today.
This staff is a shining example of how a program can be efficient
and effective, but still a place where the students can feel at
home in their learning.
Student Taylor Getting
receives national academic honor
Iowa Central student Taylor Getting, received a national level
academic distinction in March 2010 when he was selected as a
Bronze Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
6 7
A sophomore in the Computer Networking Technology
program, Getting was named to the Coca-Cola All-State
Community College Academic Team and received a $1,000
scholarship from the Coca-Cola Foundation. He was also selected
from Iowa Central to the USA Today Academic All-American
team. Getting, of Fort Dodge, graduated in May with his A.A.S.
and A.A. degrees and a 3.883 grade point average.
Getting was active on campus in many areas including music
and theatre and in the Fort Dodge community with Habitat
for Humanity as co-developer of a Halloween attraction at
Crossroads Mall. Using computer-based animatronics, Getting
and friend Alex Kitterman of Fort Dodge gave more than 3,000
visitors a Halloween scare last year.
Getting specifically chose Iowa Central to begin his college
career because of the quality of the hands-on training. “I don’t
think I would have been able to access my own Cyber Defense
Lab anyplace else,” he said.
Other highlights
Amy Simpson, Mary Thompson, and Neil Peterson were honored
with the “NISOD Teaching In Excellence” awards.
The Iowa Central student newspaper received a first place rating
in the annual Scholastic Press Association contest and review.
The Iowa Central chapter of Business Professionals of America
returned from the state leadership conference and competition with
five first place awards and the new state president for next year.
Two teams of Iowa Central Dental Hygiene students were
awarded grants from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation for
project research purposes. One for their Athletic Mouth Guard
Community Dentistry project, the other for their comparative
study of powered tooth brushes and manual tooth brushes in
plaque control and oral health in nursing homes.

Triton
Athletics
Iowa Central Wins
NJCAA All-Sports Title
For the second consecutive year, Iowa Central is the national
all-sports champion among scholarship schools at the two-year
level. With 186 points Iowa Central was the runaway winner
for its second straight NATYCAA Cup trophy.
Algoe and Female
Athlete of the Year Awards
Wilmot Wellington, football running back and member of the
track and field team from Fairfield, became the 43rd winner
of the Mike Algoe Award which goes each year to the top
sophomore male student athlete.
The 24th recipient of the Female Athlete Award was Amanda
Vorthmann of Oakland, standout member of the Iowa Central
cross country and track and field teams.
Wellington was first team all-region and all-conference and
an honorable mention all-American in football. He rushed for
1,230 yards and 16 touchdowns and signed with Northern Iowa
to continue his career with the Panthers. In track and field he
was a national qualifier in both the NJCAA Indoor and Outdoor
National Championships in the sprints and sprint relays.
Vorthmann is a two-time Coaches Association All-American
in both track and field and cross country. She was an academic
all-American, and team captain for the 2009 national runnerup
Triton women’s cross country team. She was voted Most
Inspirational and Hardest Worker by her teammates.
Kinney Cup goes to Iowa Central
Iowa Central President Dr. Dan Kinney, and his father, also Dr.
Dan Kinney, president of Iowa Western Community College,
added a little good-natured fuel to a budding football rivalry by
establishing the `Kinney Cup’, a traveling trophy awarded to the
winner of the game between the two schools each year. The 2009
game was historic because it was the first ever for Iowa Western’s
new football program. The Kinney Cup, however, went to the
younger Dan Kinney, and Iowa Central which posted a 42-28
win in the game played at Council Bluffs.
Wrestling Team Honored
It’s not everyday that a sports team is recognized and
congratulated by a State House of Representatives. House
Resolution 121 honors Coach Luke Moffitt and the Tritons
for making wrestling history by becoming the first NJCAA
squad to capture five straight national titles.
State and Federal
Government Affairs
It was another difficult state and federal legislative environment
in fiscal year 2010. State funding was once again reduced, but
due to our enrollment growth the college was able to deal
with the reduced state funding by the increase in tuition. As
of August 2010 Iowa Central has been included in the federal
appropriations legislation for an additional $500,000 for the fuel
testing laboratory. It is expected that the final federal budget
will not be approved until after the November elections so our
final federal funding will not be finalized until that time.
The administrative team is monitoring the state and federal
appropriations process and will be actively engaged with helping
our state and federal legislators understand the important role
Iowa Central plays in our regional economy, while they look
at reforming and downsizing state and federal government
programs and funding. The college has also contracted with a
grant writer who is helping us secure federal stimulus funding
for deconstruction and health care training.
Grassley Tour
Charles Grassley, Iowa’s senior United States Senator,
brought dignitaries representing more than 60 nations to
Fort Dodge. The goal is to make certain foreign ambassadors
and key embassy staffers are familiar with the many business
opportunities Iowa affords.
The community hosted the dignitaries overnight in private
homes. After a tour of the new Bio Science Health Sciences
Building, the group heard presentations which highlighted our
area’s agricultural industries.
The
Fine Arts
In the fall, Iowa Central’s performing arts students gave us
`Noises Off ’, the hilarious play by Englishman Michael Frayn.
In the spring, the timeless musical `Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat’ made its return to the Decker
Auditorium stage for the first time since 1996.
Both productions were met with enthusiastic audiences as the
Iowa Central students enjoyed another outstanding year of
top notch music and drama performances. In the fall semester,
the play was followed by the variety shows `Spotlight on the
Stars’ and the ever popular `Holiday Concert’. In the spring
the students followed the musical with the `Curtain Call’ dance
performance, an `Evening of Improv and Variety’, a new event
designed to give students (and staff), the chance to freestyle for
fun, and the concluding `Spring Showcase’.
The Art Department students had an extremely busy year too
with various shows throughout the year for college and high
school students both on campus and at the Blanden Memorial
Art Museum. There were also several guest appearances by
professional artists as hosted by the college.
“Empty Bowl” Project Succeeds
The Art students produced 100 ceramic bowls and Friendship
Haven employees and residents donated the desserts and
soup for the first “Empty Bowl” project in partnership with
Friendship Haven. This project netted $1065.00, with one
half going to our campus food pantry and the other half given
to the pantry of Friendship Haven’s choice.
Dear Friends:
This year brought turbulent financial markets and
uncertain political changes, yet Iowa Central’s tradition
rich commitment to providing scholarship assistance to
our students remained strong. Scholarships allow college
students to focus on their studies rather than working
part-time jobs.
Because of your generosity in funding a wide array of
scholarships, Iowa Central students of all backgrounds,
regardless of economic circumstances, are able to reap the
benefits of an Iowa Central education.
Thank you for your belief in Iowa Central and our mission
to support students!
Triton
Club
The “Triton Club” (Iowa Central’s Athletic Booster Club)
exists to assist our athletic programs with numerous budgeting
issues. Dollars raised through our Triton Club go to offset the
cost of operating a first class athletic program. Scholarships,
equipment, and travel costs are all areas of concern for each
individual sports program. We are currently fundraising for a
state-of-the-art 10,000-square foot weight room. Your support
will be much appreciated. Over one hundred faculty and staff, as
well as numerous alumni and many businesses, are Triton Club
contributors. Iowa Central has a proud tradition of excellence
in the athletic arena. Each year our squads are competitive at the
national level! Your past, present, and future support of Iowa
Central Athletics is vital as we continue to operate our programs
at the highest level. For information on becoming a Triton Club
member please call Kevin Twait at 800-362-2793 ext. 1360.
