1NIOS:A Schooling Systemwith a DifferenceThe National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was set up as National Open Schoolin 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, asan autonomous organisation. It provides educational opportunities to persons like youwho wish to study further and qualify for a better tomorrow. The Mission of NIOS isto provide education to all with special concern for girls and women, rural youth,working men and women, SC and ST, differently abled persons and other disadvantagedpersons who because of one or other reason could not continue their education withthe formal system. NIOS operates through a network of Eleven Regional Centres,two Sub-Regional Centres and about three thousand Accredited Institutions (AIs) andAccredited Vocational Institutions (AVIs) commonly known as Study Centres in India,Nepal and Middle East Countries. For academic courses, admission is made throughthese AIs of NIOS as well as through On-line (Ni-On) Project.1.1 Features and Flexibilities in NIOSAge Limit: There is no upper age limit for admission. However, the minimum agefor enrolment is 14 years for Secondary course and 15 years for Senior Secondarycourse as per information given in the entry requirements at Table-3.Choice in Medium of Instructions: NIOS offers its courses mainly in English,Hindi and Urdu mediums. You can choose any one of these mediums for studies.At Secondary level, besides these mediums, the choice of medium is also availablein Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam and Oriya.Choice of Subjects: You can choose any subject combination from a list of subjectsoffered as per the criteria given in the Scheme of Studies at Table-I.If you wish to use NIOS certificate for higher studies, it is in your own interest thatyou keep in mind the requirements of the Boards/Universities you wish to join afterpassing Secondary/Senior Secondary course from NIOS. Some Boards /Universities require specific subject combinations for admission to the Institutionsaffiliated to them as given in the Appendices A & B. For example, for medicalcourse, various institutes will expect you to have passed with a combination ofChemistry, Physics and Biology along with two languages. The learners who wishto join formal school board in class XI after passing NIOS examination of class Xmay opt for subjects combinations (in 5 or 6 subjects as the case may be) which areacceptable in class XI by such formal school Board,without prejudice to the rightsof NIOS.Additional Subjects : You can also select one or two additional subject(s) eitherat the time of admission or during the course of study, if you so desire or if it isrequired.Combination of Academic and Vocational Courses : In order to make theNIOS courses more meaningful, a number of Vocational Courses are also offeredin combination with academic subjects at the Secondary and Senior Secondarylevel (Refer Table 2). These Vocational courses have to be taken in AccreditedVocational Institutions (AVIs). For more details please refer to the Prospectus forVocational Courses.Continuous Assessment : During your course of study, you will know yourprogress through Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). NOTEThe credittransfer isadmissible fromsomeVocationalCoursesoffered at AVIsof NIOS to theAcademiccourses offeredby AIs of NIOS.each subject is compulsory, as you may be debarred from the Public Examinationand/or your result may be declared as "INCOMPLETE".Flexible Scheme of Admission: You can access NIOS admission through Online(Ni-On) Project under various streams or select a nearby Study Centre ofyour choice.Flexible Scheme of Examination: Public examinations are conducted by NIOStwice a year. You get nine chances to appear in the public examinations over aperiod of five years to complete your courses. However, at Secondary level youcan choose any of the following for getting evaluated and certified:– Public examination conducted by NIOS twice a year.– On Demand Examination System (ODES).– Public examination in some subjects and ODES in other subjects.Credit Accumulation: You can choose to appear in anyone or more subjects inany examination and earn credit which will be accumulated till all five subjectsrequired for certification are successfully completed within a period of 5 years ofregistration.Transfer of Credit: You can avail the facility of Transfer of Credit (TOC) to amaximum of two subjects passed from the selected Boards provided these subjectsare also available in NIOS scheme of studies. TOC is given as per the conditionsgiven in section 2.6.Validity of Admission: Your admission is valid for five years. For PublicExamination at Secondary and Senior Secondary level, you may take nine orfewer chances to successfully complete the course during this period.Part Admission: Under this scheme, you may take admission in one or moresubjects but not more than four subjects. On passing, you will be issued only theMarksheet.Education of Disadvantaged Group: To cater to the special needs of peoplewho are physically, mentally challenged, socially and geographically isolatedmarginalised and are from disadvantaged sections such as street children, workingchildren, rural women, the NIOS has special accredited institutions called SpecialAccredited Institutions for Education of the Disadvantaged (SAIED).1.2 Programmes, Courses and PathwaysNIOS offers the following courses and programmes :2 National Institute of Open Schooling

1.3 Scheme of StudiesThe Scheme of Studies for Secondary and Senior Secondary Courses is shown in Table-1. Forobtaining a pass certificate, you are required to pass in a minimum of five subjectsincluding one or maximum of two languages from Group ‘A’ and other three or four subjectsfrom Group ‘B’. However, you are free to take upto two additional subjects. 1.4 Combination of Vocational and Academic SubjectsWhile seeking admission in the Secondary/Senior Secondary Course, you may opt for one of thestand alone vocational subjects listed in Table-2, but not mentioned in Group 'B' in Table-1.Separate admission for such a subject has to be taken at one of the AVIs. Information regardingAVIs can be obtained from the website: www.nios.ac.in Or www.nos.org The pass creditobtained in this subject can be transferred, on request, to your performance in the Secondary/Senior Secondary examination. 2AdmissionModes of Admission for 2009-10 SessionThere are two modes of admission:(i)(ii)Admission through Accredited Institutions (AIs)commonly known as Study Centres of NIOS.Admission is open to one and all from 01.07.2009 to 30.09.2009. The admission willbe through AIs on First Come First Served Basis, subject to the availability of thecapacity of enrolment allotted to the AI by NIOS. There will be no further extensionof these dates.On-line Admission under Ni-On Project.Dates ofAdmissionthrough AIs01.07.2009 to30.09.20092. Procedure for Admission2.1 Procedure for Admission through AIsApply on the prescribed Application Form for Admission, which is enclosed alongwith the Prospectus, through any Accredited Institution (AI) of NIOS only. Thelist of Accredited Institutions (AIs) at UAE (Dubai) & Kuwait is given in Appendix-H. However, detailed list of all AIs/AVIs of NIOS can be seen at its websitewww.nos.org/www.nios.ac.inRead all the instructions carefully before filling up the Application Form.Submit your filled up Application Form for Admission along with relevant documentsand requisite fee to the AI of your choice, at the earliest as seats available in the AIsare limited.The AI will give you provisional admission letter-cum-receipt on receiving thefilled up Application Form along with the fee. Your admission will remain provisionaltill the time it is confirmed to you by NIOS through the AI, subject to completion ofthe Admission Form in all regards along with receipt of fee.2.2 Procedure for On-line Admission under Ni-On ProjectFrom the year 2007-08, NIOS had introduced the facility of On-line Admission inorder to facilitate the learners in registering themselves with it. There are four streamsof On-line admission catering to the learners with different needs. The admissionsin these four streams are mutually exclusive i.e., learner can only opt for one ofthem.2.2.1 On-line Admission for all learners (Stream 1): This stream for On-lineAdmission is open for all the learners as per the laid down eligibility criteriafor Secondary and Senior Secondary level. On Demand Examination System of NIOS at Senior Secondary level. Thelearner has to submit his/her admission form alongwith the original failed/passed marksheet issued by the Board for confirmation of the admission.This scheme is valid for only six subjects at present i.e. Maths,Physics, Business Studies, Hindi, Political Science and Home Science.The scheme is available through On Demand Examination at NIOSHeadquarter at NOIDA (available only through Online).2.3 Procedure for On-line AdmissionThe procedure for On-line Admission for all above four streams is as follows :Log on to NIOS website www.nios.ac.in or www. nos.orgComplete information about online Admission/Examination including the feesdetails and its submission is displayed.Learner registers himself/herself with NIOS website by submitting an e-mailID and password.Access/display of Online Admission Form and filling-up of the Admission Formand attaching the image of the student’s photograph as indicated.Fees for On-line AdmissionFor Stream-1Through Bank Draft in favour of "Coordinator ................. (Name of the AI)"payable at the place of AI in UAE (Dubai) and Kuwait only as at Appendix-H.For Stream-2, 3 and 4Through Bank Draft in favour of the "Secretary, NIOS" payable at Noida to besent to Online Cell at NIOS Hdqrs., A-24/25, Sector-62, Noida-201309, U.P.within 10 days of Online registration.Once an application is submitted for processing to NIOS, an AcknowledgementReceipt is generated and sent back to the learner, e-mail ID indicating his uniqueReference Number, his personal details, fees details, etc.The learner will be required to submit two copies of print-out of the internetfilled in Application form with demand draft of requisite fee and relevantdocuments at the respective AI in UAE (Dubai) and Kuwait only within 10days of registration. (c)Proof of ResidenceProof of residence is mandatory for seeking admission either Online or through AIs. Admission will beon the basis of proof of residence. Learners will be enrolled in the AIs within the District. Incases,where there is no AI in a particular District or the seats in an AI are already filled up, learners will beenrolled in an AI nearest to their place of residence. If a learner gives incorrect address and takesadmission in an AI other than the place of his/her residence, his/her admission will stand cancelled.Following documents will be required to be submitted at the time of admission.(1) Applicants' Ration Card, or appointment letter from the Employer on letter head, or water/telephone/electricity bill/statement of running bank account or income tax assessment order/Election Commission's Identity Card, parents passport in case of minors.(2) For applicant living in rented accommodation, any proof of permanent address along withany proof of present rented accommodation will be accepted.(3) For applicant belonging to the category of street children/destitute/migrants/slum dwellers/orphan who are without any residential address of their own at present, they will have tofurnish a self certificate stating their category (from the above) and certify that they do nothave their own residential address and for the purpose of correspondence with NIOS theywould furnish a contact address. This self certificate will have to be countersigned by thesponsoring Guardian including NGO/Orphan Homes and attested by any Govt. Servant/Panchayat Level Officials/Nagar Nigam Officers/Block Level Officers/District Level Officers orhigher level Officers. Both the sponsoring and attesting authority are required to furnish theircomplete name, designation and address with their official stamp.Note: (i) Admission Forms received without supporting documents will be rejected and fee willnot be refunded.(ii) If the Secondary level examination is not passed from a recognised Board, admission atSr. Secondary level will not be considered. List of recognised Boards is given at Appendix 'C'.(iii) If you possess a High School/Secondary Certificate from any Foreign Board/Universityand want to take admission to Senior Secondary course of NIOS, you will be required toattach a certificate from the concerned Embassy to the effect that the examination passedby you is equivalent to the Indian High School/Secondary Examination.2.5 Re-admission for Ex-NIOS StudentsThe students of NIOS at Secondary/Senior Secondary level who have completed theirvalidity period of five years of admission, but could not complete the course, are eligible totake Re-admission with NIOS. The credit of subjects passed (maximum of four subjects)in the previous admission will be transferred on submission of original marksheet forseeking fresh admission, if these subjects are passed during the last ten years (i.e., ifpassed during 1999 or later). TOC in the subjects having practicals atSenior Secondary level will be allowed only when you are pass in theory and practicalseparately.(iii) You will have to give full details of the TOC subjects and marks obtained on theAdmission Form.(iv) You will have to attach the original mark sheet issued by the respective Board.Laminated marksheet will not be accepted.(v) You will have to pay requisite fee of an amount of $ 20 per subject for transfer ofcredit for the number of subjects in which TOC is required. Details of fee are given inTable 6.2.7 Dual Enrolment and Part AdmissionUnder this provision, if you are studying in a regular school, or have already passedSecondary/Senior Secondary examination or any other higher course from any recognisedBoard/University, you may opt for upto four subjects of your choice, to update knowledgeand educational qualifications.However, on passing, only the Marksheet will be issued andno other certificate will be issued .2.8 Fee Structure for Admission10 National Institute of Open Schooling(a) Admission fee payable for Secondary/Senior Secondary courses as given inTable-4 includes charges for registration, cost of study materials, Personal ContactProgrammes (PCPs), Identity Card, evaluation of TMAs, etc. Do not pay any additionalamount for admission other than specified in below mentioned tables.

2.9 Confirmation of AdmissionAdmission to a particular course is normally confirmed by NIOS by issuing an IdentityCard having your admission particulars as per the record available in NIOS. If anydiscrepancy is noticed at any stage of admission even if the Identity Card isissued, the admission will be cancelled and result will not be declared even if youappeared in examination.Do check the particulars given in the Identity Card. Discrepancies, if any, may bebrought to the notice of the AI immediately. The Identity Card will be issued only once.You should retain your Identity Card carefully till you complete your study in NIOS.Learners appearing in external public examination/ODES will be required to produce theIdentity Card issued by NIOS at the time of appearing in examinations failing which theywill not be allowed to appear in the examination.2.10Other Facilities after Admission(a) Issue of Duplicate Identity CardIn case of loss of Identity Card, a duplicate Identity Card can be issued. For obtainingDuplicate Identity Card, first lodge an FIR with the concerned Police Station. 3.5 For Online Admissions under Stream 2, 3 and 4• Streams 2, 3 and 4 of online admission have been specifically designed for the learners whowant to appear in NIOS examinations at the earliest available opportunity. Registration for ODESIn order to avail the ODES, you have to be a registered and bonafied student ofNIOS having an enrolment number and a valid Identity Card.You can appear through ODES before April of the next year, only if you have appearedbut could not clear the Public Examination of Secondary level from any recognisedBoard. In that case, you will have to apply with your admit card/original marksheetissued by the Board or TC from the last school attended.You will get the ODES Form from Enquiry Counter at A-31, Institutional Area,Sector-62, Noida-201309 and at Regional Centre, Pune. The ODES Form is alsoavailable at NIOS web site (www.nos.org or www.nios.ac.in ).You will fill up the ODES Form Online only and submit the same to the EvaluationDepartment of NIOS at NOIDA along with a photograph and the requisite feethrough a Bank Draft in favour of Secretary, NIOS payable at NOIDA.4.3 Credit AccumulationYou can avail as many as nine chances to appear in the Public Examinations spread over aperiod of five years. NIOS will keep and accumulate your credit in particular subjects in itscomputer till you clear all the required subjects for certification. Avail this flexible schemeof examination to learn well and to get better results.It may, however, become necessary for NIOS to revise the syllabus of different coursesfrom time to time and in that case the decision of NIOS will be binding.Part Credit in Practical Subjects(a) As a Senior Secondary learner, if you pass in practical but fail in the theory of a subject,your practical awards will be retained and you can appear again in theory examination.However, if you re-appear in practical, then better of the two results will be taken intoaccount.Likewise, the part credit of passing in the theory but failing in practical is retained. Butthe examination fee of both theory and practical is to be paid even if you do not intendto appear in theory or practical.(b) For Secondary examinations, theory and practical are considered as one unit and youhave to pass in aggregate of the two. You mayapply for re-checking of the Answer Script in any subject within 30 days from the dateof declaration of results. Apply to the Director (Evaluation), NIOS, A-24/25, Sector-62,Noida-201309 (U.P.) on a plain paper or in the prescribed proforma for re-checking ofthe Answer Script (which can be downloaded from the NIOS website). You have topay the prescribed fee of $ 20 (Dollar twenty only) per subject to the NIOS throughBank Draft drawn in favour of the Secretary, NIOS, payable at NOIDA. The re-checkingwill be completed within 45 days of the receipt of your application. However, the AnswerScript(s) will not be shown to you or any one else on your behalf under any circumstances.4.9 Unfair MeansIn case of use of unfair means in the examination, your examination will be cancelledand you could be further debarred from appearing in the future examinations. Even youradmission can also be cancelled.Instructions regarding unfair means are printed on the second page of the ExaminationAnswer Book. You should read the same carefully.4.10Standard of Education and RecognitionNIOS maintains a high standard of education and this has been recognised by variousState Boards of Secondary Education. Its Senior Secondary Certificate is recognised bythe Association of Indian Universities and individually by several Universities all over thecountry for admission to Colleges and Universities. A list of Boards and Universities whichhave recognised the NIOS courses is given in Appendices ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively.4.11 Awards and Scholarships for NIOS Learners(i) “Ms. Santosh Rastogi Award for Excellence in Geography”An award titled “Ms. Santosh Rastogi award for Excellence in Geography”was introduced for the NIOS pass outs at Sr. Secondary Level from the academicyear 2005. Five awards of Rs. 500/- each are given every year.The award is given to those students who obtain the highest marks in the subject ofGeography at Sr. Secondary level in the April-May as well as Oct.-Nov. examinationsof the year. Incase the highest scorer is a case of transfer of credit in that subject, the secondhighest scorer is considered for giving the award.(ii) Dr. Ambedkar National Scholarship Scheme for meritorious students,belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled TribesThe Scholarship Scheme was started by Dr. Ambedkar Foundation set up underthe aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in 1992 with a view torecognise, promote and assist meritorious students belonging to Scheduled Castesand Scheduled Tribes for enabling them to pursue higher studies. This is a one timecash award and is given to 3 students scoring highest marks in class X levelexamination conducted by the Education Board/Council. This is separate for SCand ST. 5Tutor MarkedAssignments (TMAs)NIOS has developed several means and strategies to help the learners to learn well andbe successful. TMA is one of such tool which plays a very important role in learningprocess through Open and Distance Education System. TMAs help learners to know theirprogress and attainment level and develop regular study habits. They also help in designingdiagnostic and remedial teaching strategy during Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs).From the session 2007-08, TMA has been made mandatory for all the learners forcertification.There are three assignments in each subject which will be in booklet form. The subjectteacher in the AI will correct these assignments and provide you feedback and suggestionsfor improvement.The awards of the TMAs at Secondary/Senior Secondary courses will be in grades, whichwill be not be considered for overall weightage in the Public Examination. However, thegrades of the best two assignments will be shown separately in the final mark sheet.Learners may not be allowed to appear in Public Examination and/or their result may bedeclared as “INCOMPLETE” unless they submit at least One out of three TMAs in eachsubject (wherever applicable). 6General and SpecificRelaxations (Disability wise)During NIOS ExaminationIn NIOS examination, learners with disabilities are provided general relaxations and also thefacility of amanuensis according to their disabilities. A learner who wishes to avail theconcession in the Examination is required to submit an application to the concernedRegional Director or Director(Evaluation), NIOS, A 24/25, Sector-62, Noida-201309(U.P.) alongwith medical certificate of a Govt. Hospital/Medical Institution indicatingthe nature of his/her disability and the extent of the disability. While appearing in theExamination, the learner will write his/her disability on the top of the answer book, which will alsobe authenticated by his/her Centre Superintendent. The Centre Superintendent will makearrangements to sit a maximum of four students in a separate Examination Room with a separateInvigilator for supervision.6.1 Different Types of Relaxations1. The visually impaired or differently-abled or spastic learners shall have the facilityof having an additional one-hour for each of the subject.2. A visually impaired or differently abled or spastic learner alone will be providedservices of amanuensis free of charge. Other learners will have to meet the fee ofthe amanuensis.3. Learners with poor hand function but having speech disorders will have scribeswho can understand the sign language(other than the subject teacher, parents orsiblings).4. Learners who have minimum hand function but having speech disorders will beallowed to use the computer for the examinations.5. Wheel chair bound learners will be given facility to write the examination in theground floor, especially where there are no lift facilities.6. Learners with special needs registered under the SAIED AIs will have the sameCentre with disable friendly infrastructure and professionals who can help them incase of need. During examination the invigilators deputed by NIOS will monitor theexamination proceedings.6.2. Provision of Amanuensis6.2.1 Cases of Providing Amanuensisi. In case of blind, differently abled, spastic learners,ii.iii.In the case of sudden illness rendering the learner unable to write the examinations.This illness should be duly certified by a Medical Officer of the rank not lower thanan Assistant Surgeon of Government/Municipal Hospital/Dispensary.In case of accident involving injury rendering the learner unable to write, the natureof accident and the inability of the learner to write should be duly certified by aMedial Officer of the rank not lower than an Assistant Surgeon of Government/Municipal Hospital or Dispensary.Prospectus 2009-1025

6.2.2 Eligibility to be an Amanuensisi. The amanuensis may be a student of a class lower than that of the learner withdisability taking the examination.ii.iii.iv.The amanuensis should not be related to the examinee.The Centre Superintendent will ensure the above at i) & ii) and obtain a certificateto this effect.The Centre Superintendent of Examination Centre concerned will choose a suitableperson from the school as far as possible and forward his/her name immediatelyto the concerned Regional Director/Director (Eval.) NIOS with a report givingfull particulars of the learner and of the amanuensis for consideration & approval.v. Services of Amanuensis can be availed for theory papers only.6.2.3 Fee for AmanuensisA fee of Rs. 100/- per session of examination will be given to the amanuensis bythe Superintendent of the Examination Centre.6.3. Disability-wise Relaxations6.3.1 Locomotor/Orthopedic Disabilities1. Learners with Locomotor/Orthopedic Disabilities are to be considered as nondisabledlearner and they will not require any special provision during theExamination.2. Polio affected learners and those in case of hand injury may be provided with thefacility of amanuensis/scribe6.3.2 Visually Impaired Learners1. Visually Impaired Learners may be allowed to use amanuensis, take examinationusing Brailler typewriter, or computer. When the student takes examination usingBrailler, NIOS will seek the assistance of an organization for the Blind to transcribethe papers into print and the regular examiners will evaluate the papers alongwith other papers. The student should arrange to bring Brailler’s, Typewriter,Computer, etc., for examination purposes.2. Equipment such as talking calculator, abacus, Taylor frame and geometry drawingkit may be allowed in the Examination Hall.3. Skill based project may be given to blind learners as an alternative for practical.4. For course requiring computer skills, the equipment needs to be provided by theCentre conducting Examination.6.3.3 Hearing Impaired Learners1. Interpreter (sign language person) may be allowed in the Examination Room tohelp the deaf student to understand the questions.2. The norms of payment for the interpreter will be similar to that of a scribe.3. One interpreter may be adequate for each Examination Centre. 6.3.4 Multiple Disability/Cerebral Palsy1. Computers with adapted hardware like trackball instead of mouse, augmentativecommunication boards may be allowed. Use of Calculator may also be allowed forlearner with Dyscalculia. Learners will have to arrange for their own tools andequipment.2. Adapted chair, table, bed, etc., may be allowed in the Examination room in the caseof severely disabled children who need them.3. Provision may also be made for reading out the questions wherever necessary.6.3.5 Mentally Retarded Children1. Computers with adapted hardware like trackball instead of mouse, augmentativecommunication boards and calculators may be allowed.2.
