Student Hous<strong>in</strong>g and Residence Life<br />

Student Hous<strong>in</strong>g and Residence Life offers<br />

undergraduates and graduate students unique liv<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g spaces with amenities to suit <strong>in</strong>dividual needs<br />

and budgets. All residences and some apartment facilities<br />

are fully furnished and are staffed with professional<br />

residence hall directors and student resident advisors.<br />

Through the enthusiasm and creativity of resident<br />

advisors, students are exposed to diverse educational and<br />

social programs at <strong>The</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>School</strong> and <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> York<br />

City. <strong>The</strong>re is 24-hour security coverage, and our<br />

residential staff is tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g crises and<br />

emergencies should the need arise. <strong>The</strong> Residence Hall<br />

Handbook details hous<strong>in</strong>g services and residence hall<br />

policies that are essential to creat<strong>in</strong>g safe, supportive, and<br />

respectful communities.<br />

For students who wish to navigate the metro <strong>New</strong> York<br />

real estate market, list<strong>in</strong>gs of rental properties, shared<br />

apartments, short-term accommodations, and sublett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opportunities are available <strong>in</strong> the Student Hous<strong>in</strong>g office.<br />

Student Hous<strong>in</strong>g provides a compilation of these list<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

upon request. <strong>The</strong> Off-Campus Hous<strong>in</strong>g Resource Guide<br />

also provides <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>New</strong> York City and its<br />

neighborhoods and the <strong>in</strong>s and outs of the local real estate<br />

Food Services<br />

Students may enroll <strong>in</strong> a meal plan or use campus d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

facilities on a cash basis. (Students liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

residence halls are automatically enrolled <strong>in</strong> a meal plan.)<br />

Student Health and Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Services<br />

Student Health Services promotes the health and wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of students by provid<strong>in</strong>g counsel<strong>in</strong>g and medical<br />

services, health education, and the Student Health<br />

Insurance Plan. All degree, diploma, visit<strong>in</strong>g, mobility,<br />

graduate certificate, and nonmatriculat<strong>in</strong>g students <strong>in</strong><br />

undergraduate and graduate degree programs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students tak<strong>in</strong>g courses only onl<strong>in</strong>e, are automatically<br />

charged a Health Services Fee at registration.<br />

Student Health and Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Services offers medical<br />

services to students who are ill or <strong>in</strong>jured or have<br />

questions about their health. A staff of physicians, nurse<br />

practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and office<br />

assistants is available to serve students’ medical needs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> counsel<strong>in</strong>g services staff—which <strong>in</strong>cludes licensed<br />

psychologists, cl<strong>in</strong>ical social workers, psychological<br />

counselors, and a psychiatrist—provides students with a<br />

supportive environment to discuss concerns or problems.<br />

Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Services works with each student to decide on<br />

a plan of treatment that addresses these concerns <strong>in</strong> a<br />

reasonable and helpful manner. <strong>The</strong> Health Education<br />

Program offers health-related workshops and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Student Health Insurance<br />

<strong>The</strong> Student Health Insurance Plan offers affordable<br />

medical <strong>in</strong>surance. All degree, diploma, visit<strong>in</strong>g, mobility,<br />

graduate certificate, and nonmatriculat<strong>in</strong>g students <strong>in</strong><br />

undergraduate and graduate degree programs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students tak<strong>in</strong>g courses only onl<strong>in</strong>e, are automatically<br />

enrolled <strong>in</strong> the plan unless they waive participation by<br />

demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that they already have comparable health<br />

<strong>in</strong>surance. Graduate and undergraduate students<br />

register<strong>in</strong>g for fewer than 6 credits may waive<br />

participation without demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that they have other<br />

<strong>in</strong>surance. <strong>The</strong>re is a deadl<strong>in</strong>e for waiv<strong>in</strong>g student health<br />

International Student Services<br />

This school is authorized under federal law to enroll<br />

nonimmigrant alien students.<br />

All <strong>in</strong>ternational students are required to attend an<br />

orientation and check <strong>in</strong> with International Student<br />

Services at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of each academic year. <strong>The</strong><br />

office checks documents to see that students have been<br />

properly admitted <strong>in</strong>to the United States and reviews their<br />

rights and responsibilities and government regulations.<br />
