24True S<strong>to</strong>rywalk<strong>in</strong>g right <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a trapAs a child, Peter visited <strong>the</strong> websites of his favourite car<strong>to</strong>on characters andTV shows. By <strong>the</strong> time Peter turned 13 he was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e gam<strong>in</strong>g,which became <strong>the</strong> focus of his social life.When his parents divorced, Peter and his mo<strong>the</strong>r, Diane, moved <strong>to</strong> anew city. Websites and chatrooms gave him someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> do becausehe didn’t really know anyone at his new school yet.Peter met this guy, Len, through gam<strong>in</strong>g. He talked <strong>to</strong> him for about threemonths before he changed schools. The pair forged a bond through gam<strong>in</strong>g, as Lenknew a lot about role-play<strong>in</strong>g games and encouraged Peter <strong>to</strong> take part.Every day <strong>the</strong>y hooked up <strong>to</strong> play <strong>the</strong>ir favourite game. The two shared personals<strong>to</strong>ries, and each appeared <strong>to</strong> fill a void for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. Peter's recent move hadseparated him from his dad, while Len's own son had recently left for college. Lenwas a <strong>go</strong>od listener and offered encouragement whenever Peter discussed <strong>the</strong>challenges of his new life. This support made it easier for Peter <strong>to</strong> settle <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> school.Even his mom saw <strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>in</strong> his outlook and attitude.As <strong>the</strong> friendship progressed, Len <strong>in</strong>vited Peter for a vacation <strong>to</strong> his home<strong>in</strong> California. Peter was sure he and Len would spend <strong>the</strong> long weekendexplor<strong>in</strong>g new games. Although Diane was a bit hesitant at first, Petereventually persuaded her <strong>to</strong> let him <strong>go</strong>. Len didn't seem creepy <strong>to</strong> Diane — <strong>in</strong>fact, he had sent Diane an email about himself. As a result, she didn't feelscared when Peter boarded <strong>the</strong> plane and headed across<strong>the</strong> country <strong>to</strong> visit his onl<strong>in</strong>e friend and men<strong>to</strong>r.When Peter's plane landed at <strong>the</strong> airport on a hot summer afternoon,Len picked him up and <strong>the</strong>y headed <strong>to</strong> a community pool. Peter enjoyed <strong>the</strong>rough-hous<strong>in</strong>g, splash<strong>in</strong>g and wrestl<strong>in</strong>g. It all seemed like fun until <strong>the</strong>y went<strong>to</strong> Len's apartment. Then <strong>the</strong> rough-hous<strong>in</strong>g turned <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> hugg<strong>in</strong>g; Len alsokept strok<strong>in</strong>g Peter's back. Away from <strong>the</strong> security of his home, Peter realizedthat he didn't really know Len very well at all, and that <strong>the</strong> friendship suddenlyseemed very scary.This is what Peter did: He called his mom immediatelyand <strong>to</strong>ld her what was happen<strong>in</strong>g. It turns out that Len was a convictedsex offender, and that Peter wasn't <strong>the</strong> first boy <strong>to</strong> visit him that month.Fortunately, Len's parole officer learned of <strong>the</strong> visits and called <strong>the</strong>police immediately.
