TIME TO ‘KNUCKLE DOWN’ FOR STATE PRIDETIME TO ‘KNUCKLE DOWN’FOR STATE PRIDEBY DON COOPER“ It’s about passion, it’s aboutthe contest, it’s not wanting tolet your team mates down, it’sSANFL League footy, they playhard, they play for the jumper,”said one of the games livinglegends Neil Kerley whiledescribing with heartfeltemotion the nation’s premierState League competition in hisrecent advertising promotions. So it seems only fitting thatin the year we celebrate the150th year of our nation’sgreatest game, the two mosttraditional cross-borderrivals of State LeagueFootball are set to descendupon Adelaide Oval nextSaturday afternoon, transforming its tranquil, picturesque surrounds into acauldron of truly authentic, heated interstate battle. With state pride on the line, there will be no bigger orbetter stage for SouthAustralia’s best to tackle themight of the ‘Big V’.And who better to testify tothe adrenalin that will runthrough each and every oneof the chosen 22, who adornthe sacred ‘red jumper’ asthey take to the field than theman who wore his heart, andhis State - on his sleeve in 32representative gamesincluding six years as captain.“In my day, interstate footballwas the ultimate,” Kerley said.“To be selected to representyour state was an incrediblefeeling, and as a player yousoon realised the importanceof the occasion, particularly ina game against Victoria.”Never one to hold back,Kerley stated that anythingother than an unyieldingdetermination and committedapproach for such a game isunacceptable.“These games are never easyand I hope the players whoare selected understand thetradition involved, and theimportance of being physicallyand mentally prepared forsuch an occasion.“It’s no good saying ‘I hope Ido well’, that’s rubbish, they’vegot to want to do well andhave to believe in themselves, and every one of their teammates in that jumper.”Whilst there may be a fewnew faces to the SouthAustralian line up, Kerley hasan inspiring message for thoseencountering the somewhatintimidating aura of the ‘BigWhite V’ for the first time.“The only time I ever sawthat white ‘V’ was when Icrashed into it.“That’s about the only time Igave it any of my attention.“I was motivated by ourjumper, not theirs.”Speaking on the imminentrevival of such emotions,Kerley said ‘there’s no doubtthis game will have a lot ofphysicality about it as well asa lot of skill, but there’s onething for certain, the skillswon’t come to the fore if theplayers fall short on applyingthat physical pressure.“It’s one thing to be given thehonour of pulling on thatjumper, but at the end of thegame when you take it off, it’sknowing that every one of youactually did it proud byputting your absolute heartand soul into the game.”Although not having anofficial role, Kerley will belooking on in earnest nextSaturday to ensure thatphilosophy is applied rightfrom the opening bounce.“I certainly won’t addressthem prior to the game.“I’ll leave that in the hands ofthe coach.“But I’ll be watching theirevery move and if I seesomething which I feel needsaddressing at half-time,particularly in relation tocommitment, I’ll have nohesitation in speaking up,”declared Kerley, whopersonifies what this clashmeans in the context ofstate pride.South Australia versus Victoria1.40pm Saturday May 31 atAdelaide Oval.STATE PRIDES.A.VIC.ADELAIDE OVAL31 MAY 2008Adults $10 - Conc. $4 - U18 FREEOnly $5 for Crows, Power, & SANFL Club season ticket holders*Free entry: SACA and AAMI Stadium members*For more info visit: www.san.com.au* On presentation of membership cardSANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - VISIT: WWW.SANFL.COM.AU 5

PROFILE: LEIGH TREEBYSUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESSBY ROBERT LAIDLAWAfter two losing GrandFinals with WoodvilleWest Torrens, Leigh Treebytasted success in 2006.He now believes his side iscapable of continuing itsrecord march into its 10thconsecutive finals campaignthis season. There may have been doubtsin Treeby’s mind before theEagles finally knocked offtheir nemesis, Central District,in the 2006 Grand Final, butnow he knows the meaning of‘success breeds success.’“With us always in the finalswe just know, no matter howpoor we start the season, wewill be there in September, and winning the Flag in 2006definitely helped give us thatconfidence,” Leigh said.“The club always recruit well, and this year is no different.“It’s still early, but with thefocus on getting qualitypersonnel, people withcharacter and good footballskills, we know we will be okay.“Having good people at theclub is why I love being here.“They are a good bunch ofguys and because of that, wecan play our best footy together.”Losing its first three gamesof the season for the first timesince Woodville and WestTorrens amalgamated in 1991,the Eagles may have beenwritten off as a finals threatthis year. But with a core nucleus ofpremiership players still at theclub, anything can happen.Last season the Eagles had ashaky start, but recovered tofinish in the top three, eventually losing to NorthAdelaide in the preliminaryfinal, after earlier in the yearbeing questioned whetherthey had the mental strengthto be a force again.“It was disappointing tofinish off how we did lastseason, as we were goodenough to play in anotherGrand Final,” Treeby said.“We had a slow start to theyear, like this year, but wealways set a goal to finish topthree, and we achieved that,it’s just that we did not go onwith it in the finals.“Experience is a goodlearning tool.“After the heartbreak oflosing two Grand Finals to theBulldogs, we wanted to makeit happen and we did, whichwas a good feeling.“It was disappointing to goout the way we did last year, but now we want to make ithappen again, and we willwork harder.”Leigh talks like a leader andafter being included in theleadership group last year, heis now deputy vice-captain, arole he relishes.“It’s a great honour, as itmeans I’ve got the respect ofthe club to be in this role, after being here for sixseasons,” the sub-contractcarpenter said.“People look up to you and Itake that on board.“It’s a chance for me todevelop and set an examplefor the next generation.“I want to be a leader andenjoy working with some ofthe younger players, whilepersonally I just want toremain injury free, stay in theleague side and contribute.”Over the past few years, theVictorian raised Eagle hasbeen used primarily on thewing and at half forward, because of his pace and goalkickingability, while thisseason he has been givenmore responsibility with anon-ball role. The pace of the game isquicker in the cauldron ofstoppages, and while Treebyhas struggled a little withclean release of the ball, hehas adjusted to the tempo andhis contribution has improved. Now he is starting todevelop into an importantball-winner out of the middle.“Playing more on-ball hasgiven me more responsibility, and I love the new role,”Treeby said.“It is tighter in close thanwhat I have been used to inthe past, and whereas myform has been okay, my skillshave been letting me down alittle bit.“It’s just about getting usedto the role and because mybody feels good, as theseason progresses I will playbetter and feel more confidentin packs.“It’s not like out on the flanks, there isn’t a lot of space torun in.”While not completely givingup on his dream of playingAFL, Treeby concedes that at24 years of age he hasprobably missed the boat, butremains keen to keep playinga role at the Eagles in what hedescribes as the best statecompetition in Australia.“The SANFL just keeps gettingbetter with more good playerscoming in,” Treeby said.“There are a lot more comingfrom Melbourne compared towhen I first came here.“With a lot of ex-AFL playersrunning around now, thecompetition is even strongerand the public really getinvolved, they love their footy.“This is just a great league, andI’m hoping to play in it as longas possible with the Eagles.”Treeby with play his 100thgame for Woodville WestTorrens later this season, andwould like to eventually reachthe double century.Leigh Treeby6SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 9 - LEAGUE FOOTY

PROFILE: TIM GINEVERNIPPY YEARNS FOR RETURNTO GOLDEN ERABY STEVE BARRETTPremierships have longbeen the primary unit ofmeasurement utilised by PortAdelaide to gauge success. With 36 premiershipscurrently residing in thetrophy cabinet at Alberton, the Magpies historicallyencounter the enviablequandary of trying to findsufficient room for their everexpandingsilverware.Port would love such a‘problem’ these days. The Magpies’ premiershipdrought, which extends backto 1999, is a dilemma thirdyearcoach and club iconTim Ginever is abundantlyaware of.He is also conscious of thepressures he faces in gettingthe club back to where it feelsit rightfully belongs, not onlythe pressures applied by theclub’s board and its members, but those he places on himself.“I think the most pressure iswhat you put on yourself,”Ginever said.“As a player, as a performerand as a person, I’ve got myown expectations and my ownpride to make sure I achievethe standard that I want.”It’s a standard or benchmarkthat Ginever wants to continueto raise for his beloved club, which is currently in the midstof its longest premiershipdrought since the 11-yearbarren period it endured from1966-76, and on target for itsfirst flag-less calendar decadesince the 1940s.Additionally, the Pies’ eightyearstretch without contestinga Grand Final is the longest inthe club’s storied history.“I grew up with Portwinning premierships.“That’s what we’re all aboutand that’s my mantra.“I’ll continue to keep pushing.”As a player, Ginever was awinner. He played 314 gameswith the Magpies from 1983-97, winning seven flags. Only20 guys in the history of theSANFL have played moreleague games and only fivehave more premierships totheir credit.Ginever, who works as asales manager for Telemall, aposition he has held sinceleaving Triple M this Januaryafter ten years, has foundfinals success elusive in thecoaching world.Ginever assumed the headcoaching reigns at Port in2006 after completing a12-month assistant coachingapprenticeship in 2005 underTim Gineverlong-time legendary mentor, and now rival coach at SouthAdelaide, John Cahill, a manGinever warmly describes as“the second biggest influenceon my life besides my family”.After a perfect 5-0 start, theMagpies levelled off to finishfifth before missing the fivealtogether last season, theircampaign sabotaged by aswarm of close losses.“We were competitive lastyear but we couldn’t get overthe line in a lot of closematches,” said Ginever, athree-time premiershipskipper and dual best-andfairestat Port.“Just being competitive is notacceptable. We aim to be thebenchmark and set ourselvesto be successful.“That’s Port Adelaide and wecan’t change that.“It became a mental block(losing close games) and yougain confidence out ofwinning those ones.“In the middle period (in2007) we had six or seven ina row and that knocked ourconfidence around, so it wasa really difficult period.“We win those and we turnour whole psyche aroundand we are suddenly a topthree side, and that’s the firstthing that has to starthappening now.”SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - VISIT: WWW.SANFL.COM.AU 9

Q&A - WITH IAN CALLINANQ&A.IAN CALLINANDATE OF BIRTH: 20/12/82CLUB: CENTRAL DISTRICTBY: KATELIN NELLIGANIan CallinanPOSITION: ROVER/SMALL FORWARDNickname (and its origins):‘Wingnut’ because of my ears. I’ve had it since I can remember. As a boy I supported:Geelong. My most memorable football moment is:Last year’s Premiership. It was unbelievable. It’s what youplay footy for.I’d rather forget the game when:We lose, I feel pretty down straight after.I’m praised for:My fatherhood. I’ve got a little boy, Jack, who’s 2 ½ years old.I’m not so good at:Cooking, bolognaise is the best dish I can make.My football style could be compared to:Jeff Farmer, just because he’s a small forward like myself. The best young player at my club is:Daniel Havelberg because he can play at both ends of theground and he kicked 14 goals in a game last year. The SANFL’s most exciting player is:Daniel Schell. He’s great at marking and probably takes ahanger every week. The best advice given:Work hard and what you put in is what you’ll get out.A nightmare room mate would be (and why):Nathan Grima. He now plays for North Melbourne, but hewas bad last year because he’s a pest. He’s a bit of apractical joker. My long lost twin is:One of the Gowans brothers. My party trick is:I don’t really have a party trick. I prefer just having a quietbeer and going with the flow. When I’m at a nightclub you’ll find me:With my mates in a corner.Schnitzel or Carpaccio of Tuna?Schnitzel. My biggest fashion mistake was:Mum making me wear happy pants as a kid.Something my team-mates may not know about me:I’ve only had my car licence for two years. In my future I see:Myself living back in Tasmania.Besides playing football my ambition in life has alwaysbeen to:Settle down with a family and have another brother, orsister, or two for Jack.I play in the SANFL because:It’s fun playing with all your mates and it’s great to play at ahigh level.SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - VISIT: WWW.SANFL.COM.AU 19
