Social inclusionanother language opens a door to new cultures – if you don’twant a heavy commitment, conversation classes are available afteryou’ve learned the basics.Don’t fancy learning something new yourself? How about teaching? In many EU countries adult basic education programmes givepeople the chance to offer their time to help others who can’tread or write or, perhaps, can’t do basic mathematics. Details ofsuch schemes can often be found advertised in local libraries ortown halls.Helping immigrants to learn the language of their new country isalso something that we can do. Conversation classes are a way toget people together and you don’t need to be a qualified languageteacher to get a group of people chatting around a table. Languageclasses are often offered to immigrants for free. If you have thetime, offer to run a conversation class just to give people thechance to practise what they have learned in their more formallanguage classes and the chance to meet others from outside theirown community.Starting up your own business can be easier than you imagine. If you have always had a secret desire to be your own boss andhave a service to offer, why not make an appointment with yourlocal bank and get some advice. Who knows, five years from nowyou could be in a position to put some work in the direction of ayounger person or someone who is having a tough time findingemployment! If you have musical, theatrical or artistic skills, then how aboutputting an hour aside a week and offering your skills to a retirementhome, a special needs school or a youth club? If you are intosports, how about starting up a club or a team? Get everyoneinvolved. If you are not sure what you can offer, just showing thefact that you are interested and support what carers are doingwill be a real boost to those whose very hard and important workis often forgotten.060
