105C H A P T E R- X X I I IDrug De-Addiction and role of PRI /GBDrug abuse has become a major social problem over the years andunfortunately Namsai Sub-Division is worse affected from this menace. Tocombat this problem, a united and common approach by the law enforcingagency and entire society is utmost necessary. In our area a joint effort by theNGOs, Administration and police was launched earlier but due to variousreasons those efforts are no more there although the police have beenlaunching raids and also some success could be achieved. In fact the role ofGB and Panchayat members in overcoming this menace is of greatimportance.If we go some years back we find that Alcohol and Opium were in oursociety but now the new generation is much attracted towards refined drugsas Heroin and Brown sugar which is deadly.Hence, I have tried to cite some reasons for rapid increase in drug abusecases and role of society in eradicating this menace.What is Drug Abuse?Taking a drug to reasons other than medical, in and amount strength,frequency or manner that damages the physical and mental functioning isdrug abuse.Why Drug Abuse?Although we may assign no single reason or causes which are varied, most ofthe addicts start using drugs out of curiosity.1. Some take drugs to overcome boredom, depression or fatigue.2. To have some pleasure often under the influence of their friendsand peer group.3. Lack of love and understanding on the part of those the person isattached to also becomes a cause of addition in many cases.4. Most of the addicts are found to suffer from various kinds offrustrations in life.5. Easy availability of dependence.We may here state that the use of drug not only impairs the physical andmental health of the individual, but also kills him. It ruins his family and socialties.Symptoms of addiction:1. There is loss of interest in sport and in the daily routine.2. A loss of appetite and weight.
