Second International Symposium on
Water Resources and Renewable
Energy Development in Asia
organized by
with
will take place at the
Furama Convention Centre, Danang
Central Vietnam, 10-11 March 2008
•Asia is leading the world in terms of hydropower and water resources development, with major programmes under way in more
than 20 countries and plans for new hydro capacity in more than 30 countries.
•Vietnam has been described as the ‘New Tiger of Asia’. The Government aims to extend electrification to all urban areas, and to
90% of the rural areas by 2010, and attain 100% electrification by 2020. Investments in the country’s power industry are expected to
reach US$ 20 billion. Hydropower plays a major role in current development activities, with numerous projects under way throughout
the country and nearly 5000 MW of new capacity planned.
• Potential for small hydro in Vietnam is estimated at around 1000 MW, and this will play a major role in rural electrification.
Many multipurpose schemes will provide water supply, irrigation and recreational benefits for the population.
•Nearly 700 million people in the Asia-Pacific region still have no access to safe drinking water, and the region suffers a hugely
disproportionate level of water-related disasters (which caused about 62,000 deaths per year between 2001 and 2005).
•ASIA 2008 in Danang will be an ideal forum for the exchange of information and ideas among professionals in the field of water
and energy from all parts of the world. The focus will be on issues specific to Asia.
Needs, potential and development targets to meet economic objectives in the Asia region were clearly defined at our ASIA 2006 Symposium in
Bangkok, where more than 350 delegates from 44 countries were present. Sessions, debates and side events addressed financial challenges,
technical issues of special relevance to the region, and social/environmental aspects.
ASIA 2008, the next Symposium in this series, will take place in Vietnam, one of the most rapidly developing countries in the region, and one
keen to enhance international collaboration. This will build on the very solid foundation of ASIA 2006, and discuss practical ways of addressing
the identified needs, and enhancing collaboration to achieve specific development goals.
All involved in water resources and renewable energy development, especially hydropower, in the Asian Region should plan to attend:
Owners and Operators, Consulting Engineers, Contractors, Researchers, Suppliers, Environmental and Social Scientists, Financiers and
Development Agencies. The focus of discussions will be regional, but the event will be international.
Throughout the Asian region, there is a vast range of development progress. In South + East Asia, countries such as China, India and Vietnam
are leading in terms of activity in water resources development.
• An exchange of experience between experts from these countries and others who have major plans for the future in the field of water
resources and hydropower development will be constructive, and will enhance international collaboration.
• Experts from some of the pioneering countries in hydro/dam development in other parts of the world (for example, Europe, Australasia and
the Americas) will share their experience. Those from the Asian countries embarking on major development plans, such as Vietnam, will have
the opportunity to inter-act with the global water and energy community.
If you are professionally active in the field of renewable energy and water resources development, the Government of Vietnam and others in
neighbouring countries, will welcome your presence at this Symposium.
The Venue
The magnificent Furama Convention Centre and Hotel in Danang
(see photo below) was originally well known simply as an
elegant resort, located in one of the most beautiful coastal areas
of Central Vietnam. Furama was then developed as a prestigious
Convention Centre, in time to host the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) summit in September 2006.
Furama Danang has been called the five-star gateway to
Central Vietnam’s ‘World Heritage Road’. It is very close
to four UNESCO-listed World Heritage sites: the ancient ‘Silk
Road’ trading port of Hoi An (25 km southeast); the spiritual
centre of the Champa civilization, My Son (70 km southwest);
the former imperial city of Hue (110 km north); and, the
mystical Phong Nha caves in Quang Binh province (170 km
north). Another place which can easily be visited, just 8 km
away, is Marble Mountain, with its various temples. And, of
special relevance to ASIA 2008 participants, Danang is in a part
of the country with a major programme of water resources and
hydropower development, especially in the Se San and Sre Pok
River basins, allowing for technical excursions as well as cultural
ones. The Furama Grand Ballroom will serve as the main auditorium and part of the exhibition area for ASIA 2008, and there
are spacious rooms for break-out sessions and workshop meetings, as well as an additional large foyer area for the exhibition.
Internet access is available throughout the facility.
Overlooking China beach, Furama is set in luxurious tropical gardens in a quiet location, ideal for business meetings and
networking, but only 10 minutes from the bustling city of Danang, and 15 minutes from the international airport.
Danang can be reached from all parts of the world via: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore…
which means a trip to this Symposium can be combined with business in many of the major cities of Asia.
Accommodation has been arranged for Symposium participants both at Furama and at adjacent and nearby hotels, where first
class facilities are offered at extremely reasonable prices. Furama, and its holding company Sovico, are kindly co-sponsoring
Asia 2008 meeting rooms.
Dams (> 60 m) in Vietnam for
