Furthermore, in all area of studiesand in all industries, the need for advanced computer skills and understanding of information analysis,design and management are crucial. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Associationfor Information Systems (AIS) in their 2010 Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programsin Information Systems indicate that:The use of information technology is pervasive in society. The requirement of the workforce to usethis technology is increasing. Users of information technology are now expected to take personalresponsibility for much of what has been handled in the past by a centralized computing services unit.While many organizations provide some user training in information technology, graduates who havean in-depth understanding of the opportunities IT capabilities can provide to their organization are ina stronger position compared to their peers without this understanding. A strong, capable InformationSystems program can benefit all students in a school and provide special benefits to non-majors whodesire more competence in information technology and its application to their areas of interest” (p. 3).Program InitiativesA group of faculty is writing a concept paper for a new AOS (tentatively titled something likeComputing and Information). Related development efforts in the graduate programs include a distancelearning track in the M.A. in Adult Learning program, the proposed M.A. in Emerging Technologies forTeaching and Learning, and a possible certificate in I.T. Management in the MBA program.Adult Learning and EducationDescription and ScopeThe theme of Adult Learning and Education reflects the college’s traditional area of strength inserving the needs of adult learners, and valuing their personal and professional experiences as part oftheir academic journey. It also encompasses the more recent ways in which the college is preparingeducators who work with students across the lifespan, in both formal and informal settings, andprivate and public institutions. The college accomplishes this by offering a range of undergraduateand graduate degree program options that are flexible in terms of content and delivery mode. Thisapproach underscores our commitment to being an “innovative learning organization” with “offeringsthat clearly reflect the changing needs of learners and society.”At the undergraduate level, a concentration in Educational Studies serves the needs of adult educators,industry trainers, private school teachers and early childhood educators. It supplements several otherareas of study that provide the content specialization required for those interested in continuing withgraduate K-12 teacher certification programs. The School for Graduate Studies offers several degreesto meet the needs of educators working with students across the lifespan, in both formal and informalsettings, and private and public institutions. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) offers middleand high school teacher certification in several content areas, and the Master of Education (M.Ed.)is a research-focused option for those in the field with additional responsibilities to teaching. Theinterdisciplinary program design of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) suits many practicingpublic and private school teachers, and community educators in the humanities and visual andperforming arts.
