20 SUNY Empire State College: Academic Plan 2011 - 2015Adult Learning and EducationAdult Learning and Education reflects the college’s traditional area of strength in serving the needsof adult learners, and valuing their personal and professional experiences as part of their academicjourney. It also encompasses the more recent ways in which the college is preparing educators whowork with students across the lifespan, in both formal and informal settings, and private and publicinstitutions. By offering a range of undergraduate and graduate degree program options which areflexible in terms of content and delivery mode, this goal can be realized. This approach underscoresour commitment to being an “innovative learning organization” with “offerings that clearly reflectthe changing needs of learners and society.” A concentration in educational studies supplementsseveral other areas of study which provide the content specialization required for those interested incontinuing with graduate K-12 teacher certification programs. Objective A2.2: Create an institute for liberal arts and sciences (ILAS)In honor of the college’s longstanding commitment to, and excellence in the interdisciplinary liberalarts and sciences, as well as the college’s commitment to individualized learning, the academic plansupports the creation of an institute that would help to organize the college’s efforts to continueto foster excellence, creativity and innovation in the interdisciplinary liberal arts and sciences. Thisinstitute would be responsible for initiatives that provide unique, creative opportunities for studentsto engage with mentors in the design of learning opportunities and highly individualized programsin the interdisciplinary liberal arts. It also would sponsor professional development in the liberalarts, including – but not limited to – reassignments and professional development opportunitiesfor faculty to create open educational resources (OERs); opportunities for faculty to pursue theirown professional interdisciplinary development; and the ability to host SUNY-wide or internationalconferences on relevant topics. The institute also would pursue external funding in support of theseand other opportunities identified within the academic plan. In short, the institute’s mission would beto foster the forms of interdisciplinary critical thinking that form the foundation of both professionalopportunities in an information/learning economy and the habits of lifelong inquiry and learning. Theactivities of the institute would be hosted by an open learning environment, and would make full andcreative use of emergent technologies.
