fifth installment of the international Perspectives
on Water resources & the Environment
conference (iPWE 2012), organized by the
Environmental & Water resources institute of the
american Society of civil Engineers (aScE-EWri).
as a participant in this conference, you will
be attending presentations on a wide variety
of topics related to water resources and the
environment.
among the many anticipated items at iPWE 2012, attendees have access to
tremendous keynote speakers, a multitude of diverse and interesting technical
sessions, social and networking events, and the opportunity to interact with your
colleagues on an international level. While sessions will include topics on both
developed and developing countries, much of the focus of this conference will
be on water resources and the environment in developing countries, especially in
the middle East and africa. the technical program includes engineers, scientists,
planners, and legislative and academic professionals from around the globe.
We encourage you to share insights and experiences with your fellow
professionals on a myriad of challenging issues on water resources and the
environment. We hope that this technical exchange of ideas and perspectives will
contribute towards finding solutions to some of these challenges facing us today.
aScE-EWri extends their thanks and sincere gratitude to the many individuals and
the collective team who made this conference a grand success.
Keynote Presentation
Systems and Sustainability for Water
Resources at Global and Local Scales
Thursday, January 5, 2012
13:00 - 14:30, Room: Fes
Paul Jowitt is Professor of Civil Engineering Systems
and Executive Director of the Scottish Institute of
Sustainable Technology at Heriot Watt University.
He is Past President (2009-2010) of the Institution
of Civil Engineers, and a Fellow of the Royal Society
of Edinburgh. Additonally, he is a Member of
the EPSRC Peer Review College. He was a Board
Member of Scottish Water from 2002-2008, and a
non-Executive Director of United Utilities Water from
2009-2011.
Paul Jowitt’s major consultancy and research
interests concern the issues of sustainable
development, risk, and the development of systemslevel
solutions within civil engineering, the built
environment, and environmental management.
He was the lead investigator in a collaborative
consortium between Heriot-Watt University and
Cambridge University on the ISSUES Project (ISSUES
— Implementation Strategies for Sustainable
Urban Environment Systems) to facilitate
knowledge transfer for EPSRC’s Sustainable Urban
Environments Programme. Additionally, he served
as a principal investigator on the SWARD Project
(SWARD — Sustainable Water Resource Asset
Decisions), developing a multi-criteria analysis/risk
management methodology to assess the relative
sustainability of water and wastewater systems.
In 2008, he co-authored the paper “Making Asset
Investment Decisions for Wastewater Systems that
Include Sustainability”, published in the ASCE
Journal of Environmental Engineering, which was
awarded the 2008 International Water Association
kEynotE SPEakEr
(IWA) biennial prize for Research Excellence in
Support of Sustainable Urban Water Management
Paul Jowitt chaired the ICE Presidential Commission
— “Engineering without Frontiers” — to examine
society’s expectations of the civil engineer in the
21st Century and the engineer’s contribution to
meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals. He
was the author of the ICE’s 6th Brunel International
Lecture “Engineering Civilisation from the Shadows”
which addressed the twin issues of Poverty and
Climate Change. His professional affiliations also
included his prior membership of the International
Jury for the Mondialogo Engineering Awards
(sponsored by UNESCO and Daimler-Chrysler).
Professor Jowwitt is President of the
Commonwealth Engineers Council and Chairman
of the charity Engineers Against Poverty. Professor
Jowitt is also a trustee of the Forth Bridges Visitor
Centre Trust and The Steamship Sir Walter Scott
Trust. Additionally, he is a founder member of “The
Edge”— an ICE/RIBA/CIBSE Ginger Group created
to increase public and political awareness of the
role of engineers and architects.
MarraKEch cITy Tour
Thursday, 5 January, 2012
15:00 - 18:00
known as “the red city” or as “the
Pearl of the South,” marrakech is a
fascinating city.
marrakech brings the most outlandish
travelers’ tales to life. the city is well
known for the Jemaa al Fna square, its
snake charmers, magic potions, glorious
cuisine and hidden palaces. But it now
carries an international brand of magic resulting
from the spectacular ryads, courtyard
guesthouses renovated by international
designers. Due to its geographical
position in the middle of the desert but
surrounded by snow cap mountains and
with its cultural diversity, mixing african,
Berber and arabic, marrakech remains
a place of fascination for hedonists and
idealists.
Visitors will find it bewitching, with its
contrasting colours - the ochre sandstone
of its buildings, the green of its countless
palm trees and the white of its snowcapped
atlas mountains - as well as its
remarkable monuments and immense
gardens. See the menara Park, the royal
theatre, the congress centre plus many
other sights on this magical tour.
a basic itinerary for this tour is provided
to the left (may be subject to change).
