Issue 9 El Carmelo PTA Newsletter May 9, 2008Palo Alto Unified School District Bond Measure ABy Megan FogartyOn June 3, Palo Alto will be asked to voteon Measure A to make $378 millionavailable for PAUSD facilities. This moneywill be used to expand, upgrade andimprove all 17 of the K-12 campuses in thedistrict, extending the useful life of thesefacilities and accommodating enrollmentgrowthThe new bond will not increase property taxrates but will extend the current schoolbond assessment on PAUSD-area tax billsof $44.50 per $100,000 of assessedvaluation. The current tax is projected toexpire in 15 years but the new bond willextend the assessment by about another20 years, thus assuring that familiesbenefiting from the new facilities will beamong those paying for them.New proposed facilities include a new pooland gym at Gunn High School, a newtheater at Palo Alto High School, as well asnew classrooms at all levels. The bondproposal also includes a fund fortechnology and for building maintenance.Increased enrollment coupled with reducedclass size has led to growing pains forPAUSD. Since the Measure B bond passedin 1995, enrollment has risen from 8,807 to11,172 students and is projected to swellby at least another 1,000 students over thenext seven years. Prior to the district'selementary school class size reduction inthe late nineties, two classrooms wererequired for nearly 60 students; now threeclassrooms are needed for the samenumber of students. The proposed newbond would cover renovations, which wouldinclude energy-saving structuralenhancements, and add classrooms toaccommodate the growing studentpopulation. For more information contact MeganFogarty, 473-0428,meganfogarty@sbcglobal.netOpen House -We need help (Wednesday, May 21)By Gulya TimokhinWe need volunteers from 6:00 to 6:30 pm to help distribute food before the Open House. If you can help please contact:Gulya Timokhina at (650) 279-4232, gtimokhina@gmail.com orAna-Maria Dias at (650) 326-5854, anamaria_am99@yahoo.comwww.elcarmelo.paloaltopta.org9
