CONDOM USE AT LAST SEXStatistics: Percentage of Women Who Used Condom during the Last Sexual IntercourseDefinitionA. Coverage: Women who had sexual intercourse in the past 12 months.B. Numerators:1. Number of women who had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months with spouse orcohabiting partner, and during that episode they used condoms.2. Number of women who had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, and during that episodethey used condoms.Once the numerators and denominators are properly established, the proportion is reduced to the divisionof the numerators by the corresponding denominators and multiplying them by 100.Handling of Missing ValuesWomen with missing values on time since last sexual intercourse are excluded from both numerators anddenominators. Women with missing values in variables related to relationship to sexual partner areconsidered as having sex with other partners than husbands or cohabiting partners. Women with missingvalues in use of condoms are considered as not having used the condom for that sexual episode.Notes and ConsiderationsThe DHS core questionnaire collects information for the last two episodes of sexual intercourse in the last12 months. When the AIDS module is used, it collects information for the last three episodes. Special careneeds to be taken when matching the relationship with the sexual partner and the use of condoms. Thisbecomes even more critical with the AIDS module where three episodes of sexual intercourse have to beanalyzed. For example, the respondent could have had sex with a non-cohabiting partner and usedcondoms during that episode, but that sexual episode was not the last one the respondent had with a noncohabitingpartner.Guide to DHS Statistics 152 Updated September 2006
