1. BACKGROUNDPVAPervaiz Vandal & Associates (PVA) was awarded the <strong>project</strong> “Mapping of Cultural Assets in theDistrict Multan and Bahawalpur” on the 29th of April, 2009 (Contract No. 413/09). The Project waswithin the framework of <strong>UNESCO</strong>-Norway funded <strong>project</strong>, “Mapping of Cultural Assets inNWFP”, and thus it was stipulated that the Project in Punjab would be “in keeping with theprocess prescribed by <strong>UNESCO</strong> for NWFP”. The Work Plan submitted outlined the variousstages; comprising four components, that is a survey to map the tangible and intangible culturalassets in at least 15 villages each in the two districts using the <strong>UNESCO</strong> developed form; enteringdata in the GIS Map and developing the GIS Database; developing a strategy for safeguardingand promoting cultural assets, identifying <strong>project</strong>s with costs; and developing promotionalmaterial.In accordance with the contractual obligations, <strong>report</strong>s were regularly sent to <strong>UNESCO</strong> whichincluded the Inception Report (June 2009); First Progress Report (August 2009); Second ProgressReport (14 Dec 2009). In addition two other <strong>report</strong>s dispatched were “Rapprochement of Cultures:the Multan & Bahawalpur Culture Dialogue” (April 2010) and “Safeguarding Cultural Assets &Future Projects” (April 2010).
