ICE FORMATION PATTERNEvaporator ice formation pattern analysis is helpful inice machine diagnostics.Analyzing the ice formation pattern alone cannotdiagnose an ice machine malfunction. However, whenthis analysis is used along with Manitowoc’sRefrigeration System Operational Analysis Table, itcan help diagnose an ice machine malfunction.Any number of problems can cause improper iceformation.Example: An ice formation that is “extremely thin at theoutlet” could be caused by a hot water supply, waterleaking out the overflow pipe, a faulty water float valve,a low refrigerant charge, etc.OUTLETOUTLETINLETINLETQ130Q170/Q210/Q270Examples of Evaporator Tubing RoutingNormal Ice FormationIce forms across the entire evaporator surface. At the beginning of the Freeze cycle, it may appearthat more ice is forming on the inlet of the evaporatorthan at the outlet. At the end of the Freeze cycle, iceformation at the outlet will be close to, or just a bitthinner than, ice formation at the inlet. The dimples inthe cubes at the outlet of the evaporator may be morepronounced than those at the inlet. This is normal. If ice forms uniformly across the evaporator surface, but does not do so in the proper amount of time, this isstill considered a normal ice fill pattern.106 Part Number 80-01111-9 7/10
