February 2012Department of the <strong>Navy</strong>: 2013 and Beyondmultinational efforts, both in a deliberate,proactive fashion and in response to crises. InMarch 2011, the Department sent 20 <strong>Navy</strong> ships,140 aircraft, and over 19,000 Sailors and Marinesto Japan in response to the earthquake andsubsequent tsunami. For over five years the<strong>Navy</strong>’s two hospital ships have been used topromote goodwill and stability in many regions.The Department will continue to build and sustain these relationships using ourentire fleet and both <strong>Navy</strong> and Marine Corps personnel.Implementation of this cooperative maritime and new defense strategy requires thatthe <strong>Navy</strong> and Marine Corps demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and unity of effortin evolving to meet the enduring and emerging challenges and opportunities ahead.We must be prepared to respond to global crises in ways ranging from peacetimepresence to full-scale war. While our country’s fiscal realities prevent us fromsimply growing larger to meet these challenges, with innovative, creative thinkingand investment in our people and resources, we will achieve each of these missions.DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY OBJECTIVESOur objectives are aligned with new strategic guidance for DoD and will providereal benefit to the nation in the fulfillment of our responsibilities to maintain acapable <strong>Navy</strong> and Marine Corps. As the Department faces fiscal pressures,operations have been reviewed to ensure they meet the major objectivessummarized below.• Take Care of Our People. Our Sailors and Marines are the lifeblood ineverything we do. We must ensure we provide them with care, both in healthand wellness. As operations wind down in Afghanistan, we will drawdown ourforce responsibly, leaving no man or woman feeling left behind or forgotten.Additionally, the Department is reintegrating our wounded warriors with acomprehensive approach designed tooptimize their recovery, rehabilitation, andreintegration into our fighting forces and tosociety.• Maintain Warfighter Readiness.
