NAME OF ORGANIZATION: VolsTeach Task Leadership Council at theUniversity of Tennessee, KnoxvilleII.MISSION: The mission of the VolsTeach Leadership Council is to:A. Promote awareness and active involvement of those interested in thedevelopment and advancement of the VolsTeach program;B. Enhance the quality of the VolsTeach program by seeking contributions bothintellectually and monetarily from interested persons and/or businesses andtheir extended communities; andC. Advise and make recommendations to the VolsTeach Program Directors asrequested.III.PURPOSE: The VolsTeach Leadership Council is a group of educators andcommunity and business leaders interested in assuring that the VolsTeachprogram achieves its fullest potential. The VolsTeach Leadership Councilserves in a collaborative relationship with an advisory capacity in order to:A. Engage in dialogue with the Program Directors and university staff aboutthe development and future of VolsTeach, provide counsel on key issuesconfronting the program, and facilitate a continuing liaison between theprogram staff and the various constituents it serves;B. Work to enhance the quality of the VolsTeach program, expandeducational and field experience opportunities of students, and advancethe awareness and reputation of the program;C. Support the VolsTeach program’s need to continuously improve byagreeing to:1. make a personal time, talent, and financial commitment at anappropriate level based on one’s capabilities;2. actively assist the program’s development staff by recommendingsources of gifts and research funds from private, foundation andcorporate sources; and3. articulate the program’s vision and plans and have the skills toengage alumni and friends in supporting the program with directand indirect financial support. When appropriate, this may includeparticipation in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship visits withdevelopment or other university personnel.IV.EXPECTATIONS: In support of the Leadership Council’s mission and purpose,as outlined above, Council members are expected to make their best efforts to:A. Attend scheduled meetings;B. Be familiar with the VolsTeach program specifics so that they can easilyshare information with others as appropriate;C. Make an annual financial contribution to VolsTeach;D. Accept other duties and committee placements as agreed upon;E. Provide feedback and counsel to the Program Directors on specificmatters throughout the year as needed or requested;F. Actively support the program’s fundraising efforts by identifying andconnecting potential donors to VolsTeach Directors or developmentpersonnel;G. Help identify, recruit, and involve potential Task Force members (whileconsidering a balance of experience, background and diversity);H. Provide strategic introductions for the development staff or ProgramDirectors when appropriate; andI. Support the program by attending special events, whenever possible.V. MEMBERSHIP: The number of members of the VolsTeach Leadership Councilshall be determined by the Task Force upon a recommendation from theProgram Directors. Initially this number shall be set at between 10 and 15 butPage | 27

Nominations for appointment may come from anyCouncil member or member of the University’s staff. Appointments shall bemade by the Program Directors and shall be for a period of three (3) years. Initialmembers' terms may be staggered to assure continuity and to prevent all termsexpiring on the same date.Membership on the Leadership Council may consist of community volunteers,business leaders, or educators. The overriding qualifications for membership onthe Council are: 1) having a passion for education and the VolsTeach programand 2) having the ability and willingness to make a contribution of time and effortin learning about and promoting the program. Council members may serve up totwo consecutive terms. Once their first term is completed, members may requestto serve an additional term of three years. Members who serve two consecutiveterms must spend at least one year off the Leadership Council before beingappointed for another term, unless they are completing an officer duty and thus,their term would be extended. The Program Directors will approve all returningmembers’ nominations to the Leadership Council.VI.OFFICERS AND DUTIESA. At the beginning of every other year, the VolsTeach Leadership Councilwill elect a Chairperson. The term of office for the Chairperson shall betwo (2) years. At the beginning of the Chairperson’s second year, theLeadership Council will elect a Chair-Elect. The terms of office for theChair and Chair-elect shall be staggered one (1) year, so that the Chairelectwill serve in that role in the second year of the Chair’s two-year term.Once the current chair’s term expires, the individual will continue to serveas Past Chair in an advisory capacity as needed for an additional one (1)year term.B. If necessary, the Chairperson shall appoint a Secretary for a term of oneyear.C. Chairs will assume office in odd years and Chair-elects will be appointedin even years.D. The Chair shall preside at all meetings and give general supervision anddirection to the affairs of the Leadership Council. The Chair-elect shallassume the responsibilities of the Chairperson in his/her absence.VII.VII.COMMITTEES AND FUNCTIONS: Committees may be formed and/or activatedon an as needed basis.LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MEETINGS AND ATTENDANCE: Meetings of theVolsTeach Leadership Council shall be held bi-monthly. The program is targeted for undergraduatemath and science majors who are interested in expanding their professional skills andexploring a career in teaching. This innovative streamlined program is open to allincoming freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
