www.ewin.northwest.nhs.uk/overview<strong>Healthcare</strong> and WorkforceMany of the staff working <strong>at</strong> <strong>HMP</strong> <strong>Styal</strong> haveconsiderable experience of prisoner needs.Many staff are employees of <strong>East</strong> <strong>Cheshire</strong><strong>NHS</strong> <strong>Trust</strong>, though some are employed bysub-contracting partners - for example, theMental Health In-Reach Team is provided byGre<strong>at</strong>er Manchester West <strong>NHS</strong> Found<strong>at</strong>ion<strong>Trust</strong>. The Head of <strong>Healthcare</strong> is a memberof the prison’s Senior Management Team.The workforce includes a range of clinicalprofessions alongside managerial andadministr<strong>at</strong>ive support. Any p<strong>at</strong>ient whorequires in-p<strong>at</strong>ient tre<strong>at</strong>ment is tre<strong>at</strong>edoutside the prison.<strong>Prison</strong>ers entering <strong>HMP</strong> <strong>Styal</strong> often have complexhealthcare needs. Many are vulnerable, withmental health issues and social care needs.There can be several new admissions a dayand every new prisoner receives healthscreening, both for basic medical and dentalneeds and to identify any other health issues,including chronic or acute conditions andsubstance misuse issues.Most services are delivered within the coreworking day, but there is a 24-hour nursingpresence to facilit<strong>at</strong>e the administr<strong>at</strong>ion ofmedic<strong>at</strong>ions and to respond to emergencies.There is a General Practitioner on site until10pm Monday to Fridays and on S<strong>at</strong>urdayafternoons to undertake the medical screeningof women newly arrived from court or otherestablishments.Where possible, <strong>HMP</strong> <strong>Styal</strong> seeks to take aholistic approach to health, enabling prisoners tocombine access to healthcare with access towork, educ<strong>at</strong>ion and training, and recre<strong>at</strong>ion.For example, women are able to train andwork in horticulture and gardening.
