Western and Central Washington State Chapter Newsletter
Published quarterly for our donors, volunteers, advocates
and friends in the Alzheimer community
Ivan Neaigus and Sarah Wallace
A special way of communicating
An article in the spring issue of our
newsletter about the launching of our
Memories in the Making® art program
prompted a call from artist Ivan Neaigus
of Langley,WA who shares his life
with Sarah Wallace, also an artist. Sarah
was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease
in December of 2001. Since then, Ivan
has become her primary caregiver.
In a visit with Sarah, Ivan, and others
from the South Whidbey community
at Ivan and Sarah’s home in Langley,
Patricia Hunter and Katherine Segura
from the Alzheimer’s Association saw
many examples of their individual
artistic talents. Ivan was particularly
anxious to share with us Sarah’s work
since her diagnosis, a body of work
aptly named “Transitions.” Ivan felt it
was important for Sarah to be able to
continue her art, both because it was a
meaningful activity to help fill her day
and as a means of self-expression. He
reorganized her studio into a shared
work space and set out her materials
for her work. As time and Sarah’s
disease has progressed, he needs to give
her additional guidance by, perhaps,
giving her a faint outline or geometric
shape to help her get started with the
artistic process.
Ivan can clearly see that Sarah’s
continuing to work with her art has
been beneficial to her and to him as
a caregiver. He can feel that he is
providing her with the opportunity to
feel accomplished while continuing
to do something that is familiar to her
and has been so integral to her life.
It also eases a bit of the burden of his
Fall 2008
caregiving time while supervising her
during her creative process. As of June
2008, Sarah has completed 30 works
and four of the works were shown in
the Youth Connection Show in July,
2007 with an additional four being
shown at the same venue this year.
Ivan says,“It is my feeling that people
with dementia can still find purpose
and pleasure by reconnecting to their
past occupations or interests.”
The Memories in the Making®
program, although not designed for
professional artists, serves the same
important function of allowing a
person with dementia to be able to
express their innermost feelings
through a non-verbal means. One
thing that never changes for any of
us, despite disease or cognitive or
physical impairment, is the need to
communicate and connect with other
people.Art is a very effective tool
for those afflicted with dementia.The
Memories in the Making® program,
since its inception in California in
1986, has produced some wondrous
works of art with deeply affecting
stories behind them.The works are
not only healing for the person with
dementia, but often also for their
family members as well.
Since the Western and Central
Washington Chapter started offering
this program in January 2008, we have
trained 36 Memories in the Making®
facilitators from assisted living
communities, adult day health programs
and a senior center. For more
information about this program, call
Katherine Segura at (206)363-5500
Executive Director’s message
Nancy J. Dapper, Executive Director
When I moved here from Washington,
DC I thought “rural” was the farmland
of central Pennsylvania—and then I
visited Hoquiam, Richland, Sequim,
and Orcas Island. It redefined rural in
my mind and made me think of
Pennsylvania farmland as suburban.
In Washington, rural can mean a
community isolated by a major
mountain range and not easily reached
in winter. Or it can mean being on an
island where one must take a ferry or
plane to get to a hospital. At that time,
I was working on access to healthcare
for people on Medicare and Medicaid.
What I learned is that our state has
been very creative in finding ways to
meet the needs of rural residents.
Our chapter serves 23 counties and
all of them have significant rural areas;
indeed, some are exclusively rural and
remote. We try hard to meet the
needs in those areas through a variety
of approaches:
• The chapter offers round-the-clock
access through our 24-hour
telephone Helpline.When families
have a caregiving challenge or need
some support they can talk to a
trained professional. Our staff always
2
connects families to local programs
such as respite care services and to
private providers such as care facilities
and doctors.
• Imagine receiving education and
support about Alzheimer’s disease by
a national expert. Recently we
started a telephone-support group for
family caregivers that have been very
popular, especially with people who
cannot get to a traditional support
group meeting.We offer 100 support
groups throughout the 23 county
service area and many are in rural
areas. There is never a cost to
participate in our support groups.
• We provide care consultation by
phone through our Connections
program. Any family can access this
service by simply calling the chapter
and scheduling an appointment
with one of our social workers.
They will work with the whole
family to develop a care plan that
is personalized to the specific and
unique situation of each family.
We know that we have room to expand
and improve, and we will continue to
look for funding opportunities to do
that.We were pleased this year when
families in Sequim took the bull by
the horns and held the first Memory
Walk in our beautiful coastal
communities.This determined group
of volunteers raised $8,000 that will go
towards supporting programs and
services. For the last several years,
volunteers in Yakima have organized a
golf event as a third party fundraiser to
support Memory Walk.We appreciate
the support and are committed to
serving rural residents.
Referral Registry makes the connection for
residents in rural Washington state
When Robyn Mikkelson was looking
for someone to help care for her ailing
husband, Martin, she knew what she
was up against.Working as a care
provider herself and living in a rural
area near the town of Omak, Robyn
knows firsthand that services and
resources can be sparse. Financially,
Robyn had to keep working, and knew
that leaving Martin home alone was no
longer an option. To add to Robyn’s
concerns, her husband’s care needs
were escalating quickly, so she knew
she needed to find help right away.
Robyn was determined to find
someone that understood both her
husband’s physical and emotional
needs. It wasn’t going to be easy but as
a care provider of 14 years, she had
high expectations. She found a couple
of people to help initially, but they
didn’t work out, so she was left to
continue looking once again.
Undeterred, she turned to the Home
Care Referral Registry.
The Home Care Referral Registry
matches the needs of Washington State
residents who receive publicly-funded,
in-home, long-term care with
pre-qualified in-home care providers.
She called Jackie Menger, the Referral
Registry Coordinator for the Omak
area.“Jackie was my angel in disguise,”
states Robyn. She told Jackie about her
situation and her husband’s urgent need
for a care provider to assist him when
Robyn had to leave the home to go to
work. Reassuring Robyn, Jackie
promptly began gathering the necessary
information about Martin and also
worked with his case manager with the
Aging and Adult Care of Central
Washington. In less than two days,
Jackie was able to present a list of care
providers that matched Martin’s needs to
Robyn, to begin her search for assistance.
After several discerning interviews,
checking references and background
information, as well as support and
guidance from Jackie, Robyn was able
to find the perfect match.
Looking back Robyn recollects that,
“I didn’t know what would happen
day-by-day with my husband. I just
knew that the person that would be
helping my husband had to be qualified,
reliable and, most importantly, treat him
with dignity and respect.”
Through all the ups and downs of
Martin’s rapidly declining health and
eventually his passing at home, Robyn
recalls,“Martin’s care provider was just
a blessing; she was gracious and
understanding through all of it. I was
fortunate to have found Jackie and the
Referral Registry.”
Robyn still works as a care provider in
the Omak area, and still keeps in touch
with Jackie at the Referral Registry
on occasion.
Our world: The heavy
toll of Alzheimer’s
By Rufus Woods
Excerpt from the September 5, 2008
edition of The Wenatchee World.
Reprinted with permission.
You don’t have to look very far to find
families that have been profoundly
affected by Alzheimer’s.
It’s devastating and frightening for
those who are in the early stages of the
disease, but the families pay the biggest
price when a loved one can no longer
remember the past or the people
around them.
People don’t like to talk about it, as if
by not discussing it, perhaps it won’t
affect them.That's the observation of
Mike Armstrong, Chelan County Port
District’s director of external affairs and
a legislator.
Armstrong came face-to-face with
Alzheimer’s a year ago when his mother,
Joanne Sauer, was diagnosed with the
disease.Armstrong and his niece, Brittany
Smith, visited with me last week about
the ordeal. It was an emotional meeting
as Smith and Armstrong recounted
Joanne Sauer’s mental decline and her
passing in February.
Armstrong remembers vividly the day
his mother asked him to bring a gun.
“Please just kill me, get me out of
here,” she pleaded. It was a scene she
repeated on several occasions with her
granddaughter Brittany.
The disease was robbing her of her
ability to remember, but she was in
what they call a transitional phase, and
she was terrified. This woman, who had
raised three young kids mostly on her
own and who was always in control,
was losing it, and in her lucid moments
she knew it.
4
Joanne Sauer with her great-granddaughter,
Julianna.
Armstrong’s reaction to his mother's
distress? “You know she's in hell and you
couldn't do anything about it,” he recounted.
So much anxiety, so much fear
and very little anyone could do to help.
Sauer was first diagnosed by the folks at
Central Washington Hospital, where
she was taken after suffering a fall. The
family had been seeing signs, but Sauer
had covered her deterioration well, as
Alzheimer’s patients typically do.
The diagnosis led to further tests and a
determination by the family that she
couldn’t go home and needed full-time
care.At a visit to the Alzheimer’s unit
at Highgate Senior Living, the crushing
reality set in.Touring the Cottage, a
facility for those in the advanced stages
of the disease,Armstrong said, within
15 minutes he had to leave because he
found it so overwhelming.
It’s one thing to take a tour of the place,
but when you’re considering putting a
loved one in that environment, it really
hits home, said Armstrong.
Kerrie Mitchell, Highgate’s community
relations coordinator, said many families
don’t seek outside help and try to keep
loved ones at home far too long.
Family dynamics that are involved in
making those decisions are
excruciating, she acknowledged.
For Sauer, the descent was very fast.
After the diagnosis, she lasted only
seven months or so, and the family
rallied to her side.As time went on,
she was there mentally with them
less and less, but there were flashes
of recognition.
There were lots of difficult moments,
but also some moments of joy and
humor.Armstrong talked about the
time a fellow patient came by and
started rubbing his mother’s arm,
annoying her.“She's cracked,” Sauer
told him as the woman walked off,
Armstrong recounted with a chuckle.
Smith said what she cherishes is the
fact that the family had the opportunity
to say goodbye in meaningful ways.
They knew the end was coming and
they were able to say the things that
needed to be said.
The family will be honoring Joanne
Sauer’s life by participating in a
Memory Walk in Seattle sponsored by
the Alzheimer’s Association on Sunday,
Sept. 14.They've raised $4,400 thus far
and hope to raise $10,000 in support of
research for a cure. Details can be
found online at
Volunteers make
Mariners night
a homerun
No person was ever honored for what
he received. Honor is given by what
he gave.
—Calvin Coolidge
On August 4th one hundred and fifty
cheering volunteers joined the Chapter
for a fun-filled evening to watch the
Seattle Mariners thrash the Minnesota
Twins in the seventh inning by scoring
ten runs.The balmy summer evening
allowed the Chapter to recognize our
team of devoted volunteers who
give their time and dedication to
our mission.
Volunteers are truly integral to every
part of our organization—without
them, the Chapter could not possibly
serve 23 county communities and their
residents with Alzheimer’s disease,
Volunteering is a family affair
families and friends.They bring our
mission to life! We are constantly
amazed by their talent, energy, time,
dedication and heart they give to the
Alzheimer’s Association.
Thank you to all our volunteers, for
making the Alzheimer’s Association
one of your priorities.We appreciate
all that you do!
We are on the MOVE to end
Alzheimer's. Join us! If you would
like to be a part of our volunteer team,
please call 1(800)848-7097 ext 237
or email linda.whiteside@alz.org.
Earning income during retirement years—a planned giving example
Robert is a retired Seattle resident who lost his wife to
Alzheimer's disease and wants to see future generations
spared his anguish. Early in his career, Robert purchased a
piece of undeveloped land in the Snohomish area. At that
time, the property was worth $50,000, but has now
substantially appreciated to a value of over $300,000. Robert
would like to sell the land and invest the proceeds in an
annuity to supplement his retirement income, but wants to
avoid capital gains tax on the sale.
A solution for Robert may be a Charitable Remainder
Unitrust. Robert can transfer title of the land to the trustee
of the trust. The trust will sell the land without paying
capital gains tax because the trust is tax-exempt.The trust
pays Robert 6% of the principal each year for his lifetime;
afterwards, the remaining principal in the trust will go to the
Alzheimer's Association. Robert will also receive a charitable
deduction for the present value of his future gift. He is
pleased to be able to supplement his income and, at the
same time, he is making a significant contribution to the
fight against Alzheimer's disease.
If you have highly appreciated property, a Charitable
Remainder Unitrust might be the solution for you.
There are also other types of planned gifts including:
• Charitable Gift Annuities
• Bequests by will or trust
• Designating the Alzheimer’s Association as the beneficiary
of your life insurance policy or retirement assets.
Once you notify the Association of a planned gift, we will
recognize your gift by including you in our honorary
Founders Society. For more information on how a planned
gift can benefit you, please contact our planned giving officer,
Mary Bohmke, mary.bohmke@alz.org or (425)967-3120.
