A <strong>special</strong> <strong>way</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>communicating</strong><br />

An article in the spring issue <strong>of</strong> our<br />

newsletter about the launching <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Memories in the Making® art program<br />

prompted a call from artist Ivan Neaigus<br />

<strong>of</strong> Langley,WA who shares his life<br />

with Sarah Wallace, also an artist. Sarah<br />

was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease<br />

in December <strong>of</strong> 2001. Since then, Ivan<br />

has become her primary caregiver.<br />

In a visit with Sarah, Ivan, and others<br />

from the South Whidbey community<br />

at Ivan and Sarah’s home in Langley,<br />

Patricia Hunter and Katherine Segura<br />

from the Alzheimer’s <strong>Association</strong> saw<br />

many examples <strong>of</strong> their individual<br />

artistic talents. Ivan was particularly<br />

anxious to share with us Sarah’s work<br />

since her diagnosis, a body <strong>of</strong> work<br />

aptly named “Transitions.” Ivan felt it<br />

was important for Sarah to be able to<br />

continue her art, both because it was a<br />

meaningful activity to help fill her day<br />

and as a means <strong>of</strong> self-expression. He<br />

reorganized her studio into a shared<br />

work space and set out her materials<br />

for her work. As time and Sarah’s<br />

disease has progressed, he needs to give<br />

her additional guidance by, perhaps,<br />

giving her a faint outline or geometric<br />

shape to help her get started with the<br />

artistic process.<br />

Ivan can clearly see that Sarah’s<br />

continuing to work with her art has<br />

been beneficial to her and to him as<br />

a caregiver. He can feel that he is<br />

providing her with the opportunity to<br />

feel accomplished while continuing<br />

to do something that is familiar to her<br />

and has been so integral to her life.<br />

It also eases a bit <strong>of</strong> the burden <strong>of</strong> his<br />

caregiving time while supervising her<br />

during her creative process. As <strong>of</strong> June<br />

2008, Sarah has completed 30 works<br />

and four <strong>of</strong> the works were shown in<br />

the Youth Connection Show in July,<br />

2007 with an additional four being<br />

shown at the same venue this year.<br />

Ivan says,“It is my feeling that people<br />

with dementia can still find purpose<br />

and pleasure by reconnecting to their<br />

past occupations or interests.”<br />

The Memories in the Making®<br />

program, although not designed for<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional artists, serves the same<br />

important function <strong>of</strong> allowing a<br />

person with dementia to be able to<br />

express their innermost feelings<br />

through a non-verbal means. One<br />

thing that never changes for any <strong>of</strong><br />

us, despite disease or cognitive or<br />

physical impairment, is the need to<br />

communicate and connect with other<br />

people.Art is a very effective tool<br />

for those afflicted with dementia.The<br />

Memories in the Making® program,<br />

since its inception in California in<br />

1986, has produced some wondrous<br />

works <strong>of</strong> art with deeply affecting<br />

stories behind them.The works are<br />

not only healing for the person with<br />

dementia, but <strong>of</strong>ten also for their<br />

family members as well.<br />

Since the Western and Central<br />

Washington Chapter started <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

this program in January 2008, we have<br />

trained 36 Memories in the Making®<br />

facilitators from assisted living<br />

communities, adult day health programs<br />

and a senior center. For more<br />

Executive Director’s message<br />

When I moved here from Washington,<br />

DC I thought “rural” was the farmland<br />

<strong>of</strong> central Pennsylvania—and then I<br />

visited Hoquiam, Richland, Sequim,<br />

and Orcas Island. It redefined rural in<br />

my mind and made me think <strong>of</strong><br />

Pennsylvania farmland as suburban.<br />

In Washington, rural can mean a<br />

community isolated by a major<br />

mountain range and not easily reached<br />

in winter. Or it can mean being on an<br />

island where one must take a ferry or<br />

plane to get to a hospital. At that time,<br />

I was working on access to healthcare<br />

for people on Medicare and Medicaid.<br />

What I learned is that our state has<br />

been very creative in finding <strong>way</strong>s to<br />

meet the needs <strong>of</strong> rural residents.<br />

Our chapter serves 23 counties and<br />

all <strong>of</strong> them have significant rural areas;<br />

indeed, some are exclusively rural and<br />

remote.We try hard to meet the<br />

needs in those areas through a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> approaches:<br />

• The chapter <strong>of</strong>fers round-the-clock<br />

access through our 24-hour<br />

telephone Helpline.When families<br />

have a caregiving challenge or need<br />

some support they can talk to a<br />

trained pr<strong>of</strong>essional. Our staff al<strong>way</strong>s<br />

connects families to local programs<br />

such as respite care services and to<br />

private providers such as care facilities<br />

and doctors.<br />

• Imagine receiving education and<br />

support about Alzheimer’s disease by<br />

a national expert. Recently we<br />

started a telephone-support group for<br />

family caregivers that have been very<br />

popular, e<strong>special</strong>ly with people who<br />

cannot get to a traditional support<br />

group meeting.We <strong>of</strong>fer 100 support<br />

groups throughout the 23 county<br />

service area and many are in rural<br />

areas.There is never a cost to<br />

participate in our support groups.<br />

• We provide care consultation by<br />

phone through our Connections<br />

program. Any family can access this<br />

service by simply calling the chapter<br />

and scheduling an appointment<br />

with one <strong>of</strong> our social workers.<br />

They will work with the whole<br />

family to develop a care plan that<br />

is personalized to the specific and<br />

unique situation <strong>of</strong> each family.<br />

We know that we have room to expand<br />

and improve, and we will continue to<br />

look for funding opportunities to do<br />

that.We were pleased this year when<br />

families in Sequim took the bull by<br />

the horns and held the first Memory<br />

Walk in our beautiful coastal<br />

communities.This determined group<br />

<strong>of</strong> volunteers raised $8,000 that will go<br />

towards supporting programs and<br />

services. For the last several years,<br />

volunteers in Yakima have organized a<br />

golf event as a third party fundraiser to<br />

support Memory Walk.We appreciate<br />

the support and are committed to<br />

serving rural residents.<br />

Referral Registry makes the connection for<br />

residents in rural Washington state<br />

When Robyn Mikkelson was looking<br />

for someone to help care for her ailing<br />

husband, Martin, she knew what she<br />

was up against.Working as a care<br />

provider herself and living in a rural<br />

area near the town <strong>of</strong> Omak, Robyn<br />

knows firsthand that services and<br />

resources can be sparse. Financially,<br />

Robyn had to keep working, and knew<br />

that leaving Martin home alone was no<br />

longer an option.To add to Robyn’s<br />

concerns, her husband’s care needs<br />

were escalating quickly, so she knew<br />

she needed to find help right a<strong>way</strong>.<br />

Robyn was determined to find<br />

someone that understood both her<br />

husband’s physical and emotional<br />

needs. It wasn’t going to be easy but as<br />

a care provider <strong>of</strong> 14 years, she had<br />

high expectations. She found a couple<br />

<strong>of</strong> people to help initially, but they<br />

didn’t work out, so she was left to<br />

continue looking once again.<br />

Undeterred, she turned to the Home<br />

Care Referral Registry.<br />

The Home Care Referral Registry<br />

matches the needs <strong>of</strong> Washington State<br />

residents who receive publicly-funded,<br />

in-home, long-term care with<br />

pre-qualified in-home care providers.<br />

She called Jackie Menger, the Referral<br />

Registry Coordinator for the Omak<br />

area.“Jackie was my angel in disguise,”<br />

states Robyn. She told Jackie about her<br />

situation and her husband’s urgent need<br />

for a care provider to assist him when<br />

Robyn had to leave the home to go to<br />

work. Reassuring Robyn, Jackie<br />

promptly began gathering the necessary<br />

information about Martin and also<br />

worked with his case manager with the<br />

Aging and Adult Care <strong>of</strong> Central<br />

Washington. In less than two days,<br />

Jackie was able to present a list <strong>of</strong> care<br />

providers that matched Martin’s needs to<br />

Robyn, to begin her search for assistance.<br />

After several discerning interviews,<br />

checking references and background<br />

information, as well as support and<br />

guidance from Jackie, Robyn was able<br />

to find the perfect match.<br />

Looking back Robyn recollects that,<br />

“I didn’t know what would happen<br />

day-by-day with my husband. I just<br />

knew that the person that would be<br />

helping my husband had to be qualified,<br />

reliable and, most importantly, treat him<br />

with dignity and respect.”<br />

Through all the ups and downs <strong>of</strong><br />

Martin’s rapidly declining health and<br />

eventually his passing at home, Robyn<br />

recalls,“Martin’s care provider was just<br />

a blessing; she was gracious and<br />

understanding through all <strong>of</strong> it. I was<br />

fortunate to have found Jackie and the<br />

Referral Registry.”<br />

Robyn still works as a care provider in<br />

the Omak area, and still keeps in touch<br />

with Jackie at the Referral Registry<br />

on occasion.<br />

Our world: The heavy<br />

toll <strong>of</strong> Alzheimer’s<br />

You don’t have to look very far to find<br />

families that have been pr<strong>of</strong>oundly<br />

affected by Alzheimer’s.<br />

It’s devastating and frightening for<br />

those who are in the early stages <strong>of</strong> the<br />

disease, but the families pay the biggest<br />

price when a loved one can no longer<br />

remember the past or the people<br />

around them.<br />

People don’t like to talk about it, as if<br />

by not discussing it, perhaps it won’t<br />

affect them.That's the observation <strong>of</strong><br />

Mike Armstrong, Chelan County Port<br />

District’s director <strong>of</strong> external affairs and<br />

a legislator.<br />

Armstrong came face-to-face with<br />

Alzheimer’s a year ago when his mother,<br />

Joanne Sauer, was diagnosed with the<br />

disease.Armstrong and his niece, Brittany<br />

Smith, visited with me last week about<br />

the ordeal. It was an emotional meeting<br />

as Smith and Armstrong recounted<br />

Joanne Sauer’s mental decline and her<br />

passing in February.<br />

Armstrong remembers vividly the day<br />

his mother asked him to bring a gun.<br />

“Please just kill me, get me out <strong>of</strong><br />

here,” she pleaded. It was a scene she<br />

repeated on several occasions with her<br />

granddaughter Brittany.<br />

The disease was robbing her <strong>of</strong> her<br />

ability to remember, but she was in<br />

what they call a transitional phase, and<br />

she was terrified.This woman, who had<br />

raised three young kids mostly on her<br />

own and who was al<strong>way</strong>s in control,<br />

was losing it, and in her lucid moments<br />

she knew it.<br />

Armstrong’s reaction to his mother's<br />

distress? “You know she's in hell and you<br />

couldn't do anything about it,” he recounted.<br />

So much anxiety, so much fear<br />

and very little anyone could do to help.<br />

Sauer was first diagnosed by the folks at<br />

Central Washington Hospital, where<br />

she was taken after suffering a fall.The<br />

family had been seeing signs, but Sauer<br />

had covered her deterioration well, as<br />

Alzheimer’s patients typically do.<br />

The diagnosis led to further tests and a<br />

determination by the family that she<br />

couldn’t go home and needed full-time<br />

care.At a visit to the Alzheimer’s unit<br />

at Highgate Senior Living, the crushing<br />

reality set in.Touring the Cottage, a<br />

facility for those in the advanced stages<br />

<strong>of</strong> the disease,Armstrong said, within<br />

15 minutes he had to leave because he<br />

found it so overwhelming.<br />

It’s one thing to take a tour <strong>of</strong> the place,<br />

but when you’re considering putting a<br />

loved one in that environment, it really<br />

hits home, said Armstrong.<br />

Kerrie Mitchell, Highgate’s community<br />

relations coordinator, said many families<br />

don’t seek outside help and try to keep<br />

loved ones at home far too long.<br />

Family dynamics that are involved in<br />

making those decisions are<br />

excruciating, she acknowledged.<br />

For Sauer, the descent was very fast.<br />

After the diagnosis, she lasted only<br />

seven months or so, and the family<br />

rallied to her side.As time went on,<br />

she was there mentally with them<br />

less and less, but there were flashes<br />

<strong>of</strong> recognition.<br />

There were lots <strong>of</strong> difficult moments,<br />

but also some moments <strong>of</strong> joy and<br />

humor.Armstrong talked about the<br />

time a fellow patient came by and<br />

started rubbing his mother’s arm,<br />

annoying her.“She's cracked,” Sauer<br />

told him as the woman walked <strong>of</strong>f,<br />

Armstrong recounted with a chuckle.<br />

Smith said what she cherishes is the<br />

fact that the family had the opportunity<br />

to say goodbye in meaningful <strong>way</strong>s.<br />

They knew the end was coming and<br />

they were able to say the things that<br />

needed to be said.<br />

The family will be honoring Joanne<br />

Sauer’s life by participating in a<br />

Memory Walk in Seattle sponsored by<br />

the Alzheimer’s <strong>Association</strong> on Sunday,<br />

Sept. 14.They've raised $4,400 thus far<br />

and hope to raise $10,000 in support <strong>of</strong><br />

research for a cure. Details can be<br />

3rd Annual African<br />

American Caregivers<br />

Forum: A <strong>special</strong> venue<br />

and great stories<br />

to tell<br />

On Saturday, October 25th we will<br />

host the 3rd Annual African American<br />

Family Caregivers Forum at the new<br />

Northwest African American Museum.<br />

The museum’s exhibits and programs<br />

feature the visual arts, music, crafts,<br />

literature and history <strong>of</strong> African<br />

Americans in the Northwest and exhibits<br />

<strong>of</strong> the artwork <strong>of</strong> two internationally<br />

recognized artists, Jacob Lawrence and<br />

James W.Washington, Jr.<br />

In conjunction with the forum,<br />

StoryCorps® will be on site recording<br />

the personal stories <strong>of</strong> African Americans<br />

with Alzheimer’s disease and their<br />

caregivers. StoryCorps® is a unique<br />

project that presents select interviews,<br />

drawn from all parts <strong>of</strong> our diverse<br />

nation, on public radio. Each 40-minute<br />

session is treated as a ‘sacred’ moment<br />

in participants’ lives, and recordings are<br />

also archived for posterity at the<br />

American Folklife Center at the Library<br />

<strong>of</strong> Congress.You may have heard<br />

excerpts from StoryCorps® recordings<br />

broadcast on NPR.<br />

This year’s forum will feature keynote<br />

speaker Mark Snowden, M.D., M.P.H.<br />

Dr. Snowden is an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

in the University <strong>of</strong> Washington School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medicine, Department <strong>of</strong> Psychiatry<br />

and Behavioral Sciences. In addition,<br />

he serves as the medical director for<br />

geriatric psychiatry services at<br />

Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.<br />

In this capacity he provides and<br />

supervises inpatient treatment and<br />

consultations as well as services to several<br />

community-based nursing homes<br />

and clinics. Dr. Snowden’s address is<br />

What Caregivers Need to Know.<br />

Julia Boyd, M. Ed., psychotherapist<br />

a discussion entitled Taking Care <strong>of</strong><br />

Ourselves. Ms. Boyd is the author <strong>of</strong><br />

four highly praised, best-selling selfhelp<br />

books including In the Company<br />

<strong>of</strong> My Sisters: Black Women and Self-<br />

Esteem. She is a frequent contributor<br />

to Essence, Ebony, Jet and Heart & Soul<br />

magazines, and contributed to<br />

both editions <strong>of</strong> The Black Women's<br />

Health Book.<br />

Term Care Programs to assist caregivers<br />

with information to consider in<br />

Jerald Ulrich, Financial Policy and<br />

Training Program Manager, will<br />

provide current information about<br />

COPES and Medicaid for Nursing<br />

Homes and will respond to questions<br />

from the audience.<br />

The forum will emphasize the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> caring for ourselves<br />

holistically, body, mind and spirit.<br />

the day licensed massage therapists<br />

Mechelle McClain, Beverly Frazier<br />

and Vonda Prioleau will be available<br />

to provide soothing massage for<br />

stressed caregivers. Additionally, on-site<br />

On August 4th one hundred and fifty<br />

cheering volunteers joined the Chapter<br />

for a fun-filled evening to watch the<br />

Seattle Mariners thrash the Minnesota<br />

Twins in the seventh inning by scoring<br />

ten runs.The balmy summer evening<br />

allowed the Chapter to recognize our<br />

team <strong>of</strong> devoted volunteers who<br />

give their time and dedication to<br />

our mission.<br />

Volunteers are truly integral to every<br />

part <strong>of</strong> our organization—without<br />

them, the Chapter could not possibly<br />

serve 23 county communities and their<br />

residents with Alzheimer’s disease,<br />

Volunteering is a family affair<br />

families and friends.They bring our<br />

mission to life! We are constantly<br />

amazed by their talent, energy, time,<br />

dedication and heart they give to the<br />

Alzheimer’s <strong>Association</strong>.<br />

Earning income during retirement years—a planned giving example<br />

Robert is a retired Seattle resident who lost his wife to<br />

<strong>Alzheimer's</strong> disease and wants to see future generations<br />

spared his anguish. Early in his career, Robert purchased a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> undeveloped land in the Snohomish area. At that<br />

time, the property was worth $50,000, but has now<br />

substantially appreciated to a value <strong>of</strong> over $300,000. Robert<br />

would like to sell the land and invest the proceeds in an<br />

annuity to supplement his retirement income, but wants to<br />

avoid capital gains tax on the sale.<br />

A solution for Robert may be a Charitable Remainder<br />

Unitrust. Robert can transfer title <strong>of</strong> the land to the trustee<br />

<strong>of</strong> the trust.The trust will sell the land without paying<br />

capital gains tax because the trust is tax-exempt.The trust<br />

pays Robert 6% <strong>of</strong> the principal each year for his lifetime;<br />

afterwards, the remaining principal in the trust will go to the<br />

<strong>Alzheimer's</strong> <strong>Association</strong>. Robert will also receive a charitable<br />

deduction for the present value <strong>of</strong> his future gift. He is<br />

pleased to be able to supplement his income and, at the<br />

same time, he is making a significant contribution to the<br />

fight against <strong>Alzheimer's</strong> disease.<br />

If you have highly appreciated property, a Charitable<br />

Remainder Unitrust might be the solution for you.<br />

There are also other types <strong>of</strong> planned gifts including:<br />

• Charitable Gift Annuities<br />

• Bequests by will or trust<br />

• Designating the Alzheimer’s <strong>Association</strong> as the beneficiary<br />

<strong>of</strong> your life insurance policy or retirement assets.<br />

Kim Steppe spoke <strong>of</strong><br />

her personal experiences with Alzheimer’s disease.<br />

Her husband,Tom Robbie, was diagnosed with early-onset<br />

Alzheimer’s disease a few years ago. Kim told <strong>of</strong> the trials<br />

her family now faces on a daily basis, but <strong>of</strong>fered hope and<br />

inspiration for other families faced with the disease.<br />

The family travels together,Tom still bikes up to 100 miles a<br />

day, and their two young daughters lead full lives filled with<br />

friends and activities at their local school. Kim noted,“This<br />

may not be the reality that I had in mind for myself 20 years<br />

ago, but this is my reality now and I’m living it the best I<br />

can.”The Alzheimer’s <strong>Association</strong> wishes to thank Kim for<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering courage and inspiration to all in attendance by<br />

sharing her story.
