SHELL TANKERREFUELS WARSHIP<strong>The</strong> Royal <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Navy</strong> and ihe Shell Oil companyhave successfully completed the first refuelling <strong>of</strong> an<strong>Australia</strong>n warship by an <strong>Australia</strong>n-owned and mannedtanker.<strong>The</strong> trial was undertaken in Jervis Bay between theguided missile frigate, HMAS Canberra and the Shelltanker Conus. Original planning for the refuelling <strong>of</strong> RANships from merchant tankers was raised in October, 1981after the Naval Control <strong>of</strong> Shipping exercise 'Bell Buoy'i.ad shown it to be highly desirable.Canberra was commanded by Commander ChrisOxenbould and Conus by Captain David Sadler. CaptainSadler is also a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal<strong>Australia</strong>n Naval Reserve.Fuelling began at 2.30 pm and was completed an hourlater after 100 tonnes <strong>of</strong> automotive gas oil (dicsel fuel) hadbeen discharged from tanker to FFG. <strong>The</strong> operation wasdeemed highly successful, satisifying the <strong>Navy</strong> desire to testaccess to a mobile fuel stock aboard a merchant tanker.HMAS Canberra is one <strong>of</strong> four FFGs in service or ontrials with the fleet. <strong>The</strong> ship was commissioned on 21March, 1981 and now forms part <strong>of</strong> the RAN SecondDestroyer Squadron. She is armed with both Harpoon andStandard missiles, a 76mm gun, torpedoes, and isscheduled to receive the Phalanx anti-missile gun andhelicopters in the near future.Conus was built in Japan and handed over to Shell on 31March, 1981. At 30,000 tonnes dead weight, she is one <strong>of</strong>the largest tankers operating in <strong>Australia</strong>n waters. <strong>The</strong>ship's hull features nineteen individual cargo holds for avariety <strong>of</strong> oil products.
