Course overviewThis highly fl exible <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Social Careis designed <strong>and</strong> delivered <strong>in</strong> partnership with local employers <strong>and</strong>provides an excit<strong>in</strong>g opportunity for staff work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> health <strong>and</strong>social care sett<strong>in</strong>gs to ga<strong>in</strong> new knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills.Our aim is to develop your knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills, which will enhanceyour role with<strong>in</strong> care <strong>and</strong> enable you to document the evidence <strong>of</strong>the learn<strong>in</strong>g experience for your own career development.The course is primarily aimed at care workers who are tak<strong>in</strong>gon new roles such as assistant practitioners, associatepractitioners or team leaders who have already achieveda level <strong>of</strong> responsibility, but who want to consolidate thatwith evidence <strong>of</strong> new knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills to enhance theirpractise. It is, however, open to all who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong>explor<strong>in</strong>g new aspects <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong> social care <strong>and</strong> whoare <strong>in</strong> employment <strong>in</strong> a relevant place <strong>of</strong> work. Limited studyplaces may be available for applicants who are currently not<strong>in</strong> employment.About the courseThe course consists <strong>of</strong> units <strong>of</strong> study called modules.Your taught sessions will conta<strong>in</strong> core content <strong>and</strong> you will also havethe opportunity to customise your ‘pathway’ dur<strong>in</strong>g the course.With the support <strong>of</strong> your tutors, you will be able to identify work-basedlearn<strong>in</strong>g outcomes that refl ect <strong>and</strong> respond to your <strong>in</strong>dividual role <strong>and</strong>employment needs.You will attend classes that <strong>in</strong>clude:-• study skills• science for health <strong>and</strong> social care• social <strong>and</strong> welfare systems• legal <strong>and</strong> ethical aspects <strong>of</strong> care• research <strong>and</strong> evidence.Teach<strong>in</strong>g will ma<strong>in</strong>ly be undertaken <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>and</strong> we encouragestudent participation. You will also have the opportunity to useour well-equipped cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills suites to learn new skills <strong>and</strong> workalongside other health <strong>and</strong> social care students.In addition, you will learn through your own workplace, supported by asupervisor <strong>and</strong> work-based learn<strong>in</strong>g team. The focus <strong>of</strong> your learn<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> the workplace will be pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills specifi c to your <strong>in</strong>dividualrole <strong>and</strong> the completion <strong>of</strong> a personal portfolio.Course structureThe course runs for two years full-time <strong>and</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>es both classroomstudy <strong>and</strong> work-based learn<strong>in</strong>g. The days are organised as follows:• One day a week per academic year (September - July)attend<strong>in</strong>g taught sessions.• Two to four days a week <strong>in</strong> workplace learn<strong>in</strong>g throughoutthe year.Teach<strong>in</strong>g, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> assessmentIn health <strong>and</strong> social care no pr<strong>of</strong>essional group works <strong>in</strong> isolation.<strong>Oxford</strong> Brookes teaches a very wide range <strong>of</strong> pre-qualifi cation <strong>and</strong>foundation courses <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g nurs<strong>in</strong>g (adult, children’s <strong>and</strong> mentalhealth), midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operat<strong>in</strong>gdepartment practice, paramedic emergency care, physiotherapy<strong>and</strong> social work. You will share your learn<strong>in</strong>g with these otherhealth care students. This is a key component <strong>of</strong> the course as it isessential <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g your teamwork skills <strong>and</strong> your underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<strong>of</strong> the other roles you will encounter <strong>in</strong> practice.We <strong>of</strong>fer a very friendly <strong>and</strong> supportive environment <strong>in</strong> which tolearn <strong>and</strong> we consistently receive very high satisfaction rat<strong>in</strong>gs forstudent support <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g resources <strong>in</strong> student surveys.
