SPECIAL TRIBUTEWhen Students AreSearching for Answers . . .Mary Shultz DeliversWhen medical students come tocampus to begin their study, theyknow there will be a built-in setof resources to help them achievesuccess—professors to teach them, peers to collaborate with, and staffto support them. But sometimesthat support comes from unlikelysources—people the students mightnot have thought about as beinginstrumental to their success—people like Mary Shultz. As an assistant professor andassistant librarian in the Library ofthe Health Sciences on campus, Shultz is responsiblefor directing the information services team within thelibrary and providing direct help to faculty, clinicians, and students in online searching for their researchprojects. Her exemplary work with the students hasearned her recognition by the Class of 2006 as theSpecial Tribute Award recipient.“When you go to medical school, it’s unlikely thatyou know the role that a librarian can play in yoursuccess,” says Aikiesha Shelby, a 2006 graduate whonominated Mary for this award. “But we certainlyhave come to understand very quickly how influentialtheir help can be when we tackle the research in ourfirst-year Introduction to HumanDisease course. Mary has beenexceptional in helping us, withprojects from the first year to ourfinal year Medicine and Societycourse, whether by directing us tojust the right resources or assistingus in fleshing out ideas. We couldalways count on her to patientlyand knowledgeably guide us.”It’s not an easy task, if only becauseof the sheer volume of informationavailable. The students will tellyou that sorting through suchlarge amounts of information canbe daunting. Shultz agrees, “Themajor challenge for students, faculty, and even librarians is the overwhelming natureof the information and the fact that it is constantlychanging. It may be easy to do a search and get a resultof thousands, but the key is to find ways to narrowyour search to get the information you really need. Our goal as librarians is to help students to acquirethese skills because as they care for their patientsthrough the years they will continually be seeking thelatest information.”Victoria Pifalo, health sciences librarian, has watchedShultz do just that. “Mary uses teachable momentsto expand the ability of others to find and manageinformation independently,” she says. “She also acts as2006 CONVOCATION AND AWARDS CEREMONY 9

the searcher when the case requiresadvanced expertise or the situationis of an urgent nature.”With the library handling anaverage of 600 reference questions amonth, the need for such expertiseis obvious. “Our students arevery savvy searchers themselves,”says Shultz. “They know so muchalready and are very comfortablewith the technology, so thequestions they ask are often themost difficult, the ones that alreadyhave them stumped.”But according to Shultz that’swhat makes the job so interesting.“The variety of the work and thedepth of the questions is especiallyinteresting professionally,” shesays. “We have such a high caliberof students with wide ranginginterests in medicine and beyond.Every day there is some newchallenge, and that’s what makes itso rewarding.”When we began medical school, we worried aboutpassing nine classes and staying sane—with very littlethought about the library. However, early in our firstyear in the Introduction to Human Disease Course, wewere first introduced to Mary when she held a sessionon how to effectively navigate through the abundantresources available in our library.Until that time, we didn’t fully understand the valueof a medical librarian. But, as we got into our studies,we became overwhelmed by the sheer volume ofinformation that the internet provides. We soondiscovered Mary’s expertise as she came to our aid! Shewould sit down with us, help us clarify what we needed, and then spend as much time as was necessary to getour information. Mary was often willing to stay pasther working hours to ensure that we had everythingwe needed. People don’t realize that medical referencelibrarians are one of the absolute best resources that wehave in medicine today. Mary is the best example of that.10 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDIn 1986, the University of Illinois College ofMedicine at Urbana-Champaign established a SpecialRecognition Award to honor individuals who haveprovided outstanding contributions or service to theCollege. In 2006, there are two Special RecognitionAward recipient who will be recognized during theConvocation and Awards Ceremony—Willard J.Visek, M.D., Ph.D., and Ralph A. Nelson, M.D.,Ph.D.Today, we take it for granted that nutrition andmetabolism play an important role in improving healthand controlling disease. But that hasn’t always been thecase. When Ralph Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., andWillard Visek, M.D., Ph.D., joined the College ofMedicine as professors of clinical nutrition in the1970s, many people were unconvinced that diseaseswere diet related. Drs. Nelson and Visek’s researchover the years has played a role in convincing themotherwise. It also has earned them the respect of theircolleagues and the College, which has named them thisyear’s recipients of the Special Recognition Awards.Ralph Nelson,M.D., Ph.D.Dr. Nelson beganhis affiliationwith the Collegein 1979, servingas a professor ofnutrition andinternal medicine, and later as head ofthe Department ofInternal Medicine, until his retirementin 2002. Duringthat time, he also served as director of research forCarle Foundation Hospital, work he continues topursue today.Much of his groundbreaking research has focusedon black bears and how what we know about theirmetabolism can improve the health of humans. Thisbiodiversity research has made important contributionsto the treatment of osteoporosis and kidney diseaseand has also brought Dr. Nelson some extensive andvaried media exposure—from the BBC to NationalGeographic to “Sesame Street” to People magazine. His research continues to be studied by pharmaceuticalcompanies as they pursue new treatment options. Some of the topics of his recent research efforts includemetabolism and long-term space flights, calorie andnitrogen balance in hospitalized patients, and energy2006 CONVOCATION AND AWARDS CEREMONY 13

expenditure in humans. Over the years, Dr. Nelson’sresearch has been published in a variety of national andinternational medical journals, and he is the co-authorof The Mayo Clinic Renal Diet Cookbook.Dr. Nelson received his M.D. from the Universityof Minnesota in 1953 and was named the first NIHFellow at Mayo Clinic in 1958. “At Mayo, I wasexposed to great researchers,” he said. “And I decidedto go into research myself.” After earning his Ph.D.in physiology, Dr. Nelson spent five years as a facultymember at Case Western Reserve University and thedirector of the research lab at Fairview Park Hospitalin Cleveland, Ohio. He returned to Mayo in 1967,teaching and conducting research for 12 years. His move to the College of Medicine and Carle in1979 “was the best thing I ever did,” Dr. Nelson said.“This is an excellent atmosphere for an M.D./Ph.D.”And certainly his contributions have helped make it so.WillardVisek, M.D.,Ph.D.As one of thefirst two clinicalprofessorsassociatedwith theUniversity ofIllinois Collegeof Medicineat Urbana-Champaign,Dr. Visek usedhis expertiseto develop theclinical nutrition curriculum. His work established theCOM-UC as having the first required clinical clerkshipin nutrition in a U.S. medical school.“I came to the University of Illinois in 1975, and thatwas before most people appreciated the relationshipbetween disease and nutrition,” said Dr. Visek.“At the time, Illinois had a distinguished record inanimal nutrition, and I thought, as did many of mycolleagues, that this opportunity at the College wasa good way to get the campus to form a partnershipbetween Ag and Medicine. Plus, it provided me withan opportunity to use both my scientific and medicaltraining.”Over the years, Dr. Visek has used that trainingto educate students about the important role thatnutrition and metabolism play in disease prevention. His graduate students, including the College’s very firstM.D./Ph.D. student, benefited from his expertise and14 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

mentorship. “It seems obvious to people now that dietimpacts your health. In fact, everyone really thinksthey’re an expert on nutrition. But back then it was afairly new idea.”Prior to joining the College faculty, Dr. Visekwas an associate professor of pharmacology at theUniversity of Chicago from 1957 to 1964 and aprofessor of nutrition and comparative metabolismin the Department of Animal Science at CornellUniversity from 1964 to 1975. He received his Ph.D.in biochemistry from Cornell in 1951 and his M.D.from the University of Chicago in 1957. While amedical student, he began research on protein and liverdisease, work that has received national recognition. The American Society for Nutritional Sciences haspresented Dr. Visek with the Osborn and MendelAward for his research on ammonia and amino acidmetabolism and the Conrad Elvenjem Award forpublic service to nutrition. He received an honorary doctorate and the AlumniAchievement Award from the University of Nebraska, where he completed his undergraduate work, and theDistinguished Service Award from the University ofChicago.
