NORTH SAILSCapri 22 Tuning GuideRev.. H0601Thanks for your purchase of North Sailsfor your Capri 22. We have designedthese sails to be fast, easy to use andlong lasting. The following tuning guide ismeant to be a starting point for setting upyour rig. We have developed these settingsand instructions in order make your C 22easy to sail and fast throughout the widerange of conditions.MAST RAKEFactory head stay length is 25’5”, Gibbhook to end of stud. Attach toggle onbottom of turnbuckle to the farthestforward stem hole, and extend turnbuckleto max ease setting. This is your light-airrake/tension setting. (Be sure to removeany additional toggles, as these will inducetoo much weather helm.)WindSpeedUpperShroudTensionLowerShroudTension0-5 28 186-9 31 20HeadStayMaxrakeMaxrakeUsing Loos Model PT1Go out and sail this setting to ensure the main setsup smoothly to the rig. If it doesn’t, you may need tomake some minor lower adjustments to fit the mainsails luff curve with your mast. Be sure to removethe spinnaker pole mast track and substitute a fixedring. This will allow more flexibility in the lowersections of your mast and allow for a wider rangeof settings.10-14 +2 Turns +1 Turn15-20 +4 Turns +2 Turns21+ +6 Turns +3 Turns+10Turns+20Turns+30TurnsHEADSTAY TENSIONThese numbers are flat water and steadybreeze only. The more wave/swell andbreeze fluctuations, the less turns youshould put on.GENOA LEAD POSITIONRemove stock genoa lead tracks andreplace with race tracks. These have moreholes and provide finer adjustment. Placethe car all the way forward for the lightair setting. The turning block should beon the trim in until the foot of the genoatouches the upper shrouds with increasesin windspeed. If the mainsail starts to overback-wind the mainsail, drop the car backone hole at a time until this problem stops.Be careful not to move the lead back toofar as you can lose necessary leech tensionand also your ability to point.BACKSTAY“A little bit of a properly rigged one ofthese, goes a long way.”Since the mast of the Capri is relativelysoft, applying backstay can depowerthe sail plan thus reducing helm relateddrag and increasing your ability to keepthe boat tracking. A 16:1 purchasesystem is recommended. Synthetic lineis not only class legal, but much softeron your mainsail than the factory wireand recommended. The backstay andmainsheet work together between yourstandard rig settings to handle theinevitable fluctuations in sea state andwind velocity.CREW WEIGHTSince there are no limitations on numberof crew, or their combined weight, sailwith at least three crew to maximizemaneuvers. As the breeze builds intothe 10-14 range and up, try to sail withadditional crew members, or heavier ones.A good minimum racing crew weight is600 lbs. You may want to be closer to 700or more if you anticipate winds in excessof 15 knots steady. Try to accomplish thiswith four to five crew, as any more getscrowded.AFTERMARKET RUNNING RIGGINGIMPROVEMENTSRecent changes to the Capri 22 ClassRules now allow for changes as longas they are “not used in such a wayas to change the fundamental sailingcharacteristics of the Capri22.”Some of the bases include:1.
