Clan & Plurio LEDLighting – Your demandingdesign briefToday’s urban planner faceslighting demands undreamtof even a decade ago. It isno longer sufficient to provideorientation and security afterdark. There is little point inproviding the most energyefficient neighbourhood if itsnot an attractive place to live.Sustainablity is now recognisedas one of the most influentialfactors in the successfulcompletion of many projects. This covers not only theenvironmental dimension, but alsothe social and human aspects interms of creating cohesive, urbandevelopments. Here are some of therequirements taken from recenturban masterplans:Environmental• Avoid obtrusive light• Decrease the energy bill andCO 2footprint• Be cost efficient, easy tooperate and maintain• Provide good quality whitelightSocial• Enhance urban and residentialsecurity and safety• Add visual coherence to theurban landscape• Strengthen local identity byrevealing the character andheritage of focal points andlandmarks• Enhance the social dimensionand stimulate the eveningeconomy• Reduce intrusion into residentialspacesThorn’s stylish response –Clan and Plurio LEDAn emphasis on sustainabilityhas led to the development of theClan collection. Clan presentsa portfolio linked by a singleconsistent design theme to givegreat scope to the landscapearchitect and designer. Togetherwith the Plurio LED lantern it isan essential element in bringingperformance, efficiency andcomfort (PEC) to urban spaces.Performance: Providing thebest visual effectivenessEfficiency: Conserving energyand effort, reducing CO 2emissions and waste, providinglighting that is practical andefficient to install, operate andmaintainAt Thorn we recognise oursustainability responsibilities, and with the PEC programme wehave introduced a wide-rangingphilosophy that underpins ourapproach to lighting design andimplementation. The programmeis based on the principle thatperformance, efficiency andcomfort determine the visualeffectiveness of lighting.Comfort: giving peoplesatisfaction and stimulationThese key attributes aredemonstrated throughout thisbrochure.3

A global approach toenhance the cityIn some respects lighting a cityis like a musical composition. It’s all about the interrelatedorganisation of tones, forms, rhythms and harmony. Be theyfast or slow, simple or complex.Clan C on Deco wall bracketClose-up view of bracketIn the past, planners and architects have enjoyed considerable freedomof choice for façade and in-ground recessed lighting styles; yet therange of complimentary brackets and lanterns has been limited andlacking design flair. Clan enables the designer to achieve a fullyintegrated design and build a co-ordinated lighting scheme. The use of Clan C, mounted on Deco wall bracket, and equippedwith LED engines illuminates the street, uniformly and discreetly, without affecting accessibility. The lanterns which create no upward or backward spill light providesthe perfect distribution for facial recognition by pedestrians andCCTV technology.Co-ordinated with the general ambient lighting Mica Slim LED ingroundrecessed luminaires and Milo floodlights add visual appealand contribute immeasurably to the ‘feel’ of the street. So whatever your requirements in urban lighting design are you canbe assured that combining Clan and other Thorn ranges will result in aco-ordinated installation.Clan C LED 3000lm 39W streetOther products used: Mica Slim LED in ground and Milo to illuminate the niche on the façade.5

Decrease your energy billand CO 2footprintThe key to reducing yourCO 2footprint in lighting isefficient operation.Clan C mounted on Archi twin bracketEfficient operationOutdoor lighting accounts for approximately 40 % of a city’selectrical spend. This can be greatly reduced by using efficientlydesigned luminaire optics and selecting the correct lamp and ballastcombination. Indeed, Australia could save on tonnes of CO 2byswitching to more efficient urban lighting solutions. With Clan featuring new generations of optical systems, light sources, gears and lighting controls, you can achieve up to 50% energysavings on current aged installations without compromising on thequality of light.Dimming functions are available for Cosmopolis ® lamp and LEDoptions. Dimming with LEDs enables further savings up to 50% whencompared with conventional lamps (see graph below).Close-up view of bracketPotential energy savings with Clan 70W HIT-CE vs 58W LED23% 25%Energy consumptionElectronicgearDimmingElectronicgear50%DimmingClan C LED 5000lm 58W streetCLAN 70W HIT-CECLAN LED 5000lm 58W7

LEDs for durability andlow maintenanceIn modern sustainable urban master plans, few designerswould create projects without considering LEDsHigh Performance optical system ®Thorn has developed a unique and patented technological conceptfor its optics used in Clan and the Plurio LED lanterns. Complying withEN13201, this concept offers the optimisation of the overall opticalsystem with high lumen output, high efficacy, better control of the fluxand glare limitation without the need to tilt the luminaire. The optical system has been optimised using:• A combination of LEDs and LEDs with lenses to achieve thelongitudinal flux distribution• Grids to achieve the transversal flux distribution• Mirror finishes to optimise the light distribution and limit glare :they also ensure that each LED effectively delivers light to theapplication. Contrary to pure directional systems the failure ofone LED will not affect the distribution of the luminaire.Performance and efficiency are the key elements to optimise energyconsumption and ensure the safety of end users. The challenge, of course,is to maintain this over time and to reduce maintenance costsOptimised lifetimeClan LED has been designed for a 80,000h lifetime (L70, 25°) or50,000h lifetime (L80, 25°C). In a typical night time burning situation, this can equate to over 20 years, but the ambient operating temperaturehas an important effect on the life expectancy of the LED luminaire. In thegraph (fig 1) the horizontal line marks this minimum number of hoursand the curve shows LED life expectancy expressed in hours for variousaverage ambient temperatures at night. Thus, the number of hours canexceed 80,000h dependant upon geographical location.See Fig. 1.Gain 20% lifetime with dimmingAll Clan LED lanterns are available with integrated dimming at noextra cost. Dimming can increase the lifetime of an installation by 20%.Fig. 1. Clan LEDs lifetime vs ambient temperatureLifetime Clan LEDs : 80,000hrs with 70% initial flux @500mA-Ta=25°C140 000 h120 000 h100 000 hReliability80 000 h60 000 h40 000 hMF -70%MF -80%20 000 h0 h-30˚C -20˚C -10˚C0˚C 10˚C 20˚C 30˚C 40˚C 50˚C 60˚CAmbient temperature26

All optical andelectronic parts are protected inan IP66 environment to withstandmost environmental conditions. Therefore, the only maintenancerequired is cleaning of thediffuser/glass regularly to ensurethe maintenance of light levels,as per conventional lanterns.27
