final chance <strong>to</strong> go in a personal event, it was the grueling 440-yard"dash".The 440-yard dash is a killer. It is <strong>to</strong>o short <strong>for</strong> those who like distancerunning <strong>to</strong> show their stamina, and it is at the upper limit of those whocare<strong>to</strong> sprint. It was there<strong>for</strong>e rather unpopular compared <strong>to</strong> the otherrunningevents. And now it was my last personal chance this year <strong>to</strong> qualify <strong>for</strong>theState Meet. How would I unleash myself? My strategy <strong>for</strong> the race was<strong>to</strong> runthe first 100 yards like it was my specialty, the 100 yd. dash, then Iwouldstay relaxed and ride my momentum until the last 60 yards, and kick <strong>for</strong>allthat I was worth. In other words, I was not going <strong>to</strong> hold back anythingat thestart, it would be ME (maximum ef<strong>for</strong>t), and I'd pick up the pieces atthe endwith whatever I had left. It was not a conservative strategy, it was agamble,a go <strong>for</strong> broke gamble, but I felt, what have I got <strong>to</strong> lose.I had avoided running a lot of 440 races in competition this particularyear.(Training <strong>for</strong> the 440 in afternoon practice was a swift way <strong>for</strong> me <strong>to</strong>"lose mycookies", as if the body were trying <strong>to</strong> lighten its load by emptying itscontents.) But like the race or not, it was now my one chance, and it wasgetting all I had left after a long day. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, my sporadic racesinthe 440 that year also meant I hadn't clocked a good enough time <strong>to</strong> beseededin the first heat with the best runners. In my other races, I had been withthe best heats.The gun sounded and I <strong>to</strong>ok off like a bat out of hell. I quickly left thefield of runners behind and pulled out alone out front.
