Starting & DrivingDIESEL MODELSStarting the engine1. Check that the handbrake is applied and that the gearlever is in neutral (‘P’ or ‘N’ for automatic transmission).2. Switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment(including the air conditioning).3. Insert the key and turn the starter switch to the secondposition. Wait until the glow plug warning lightextinguishes.4. Turn the key to the third position to operate the startermotor; DO NOT press the accelerator pedal duringstarting and release the key as soon as the engine isrunning. If the engine stalls, you MUST turn the starter switch fully offbefore turning the starter switch back to the second position. Then wait until the glow plug warning light goes out beforeattempting to restart; the engine will not start after stalling byturning the starter switch from the second position. In temperate climates, DO NOT operate the starter switchfor longer than 5 seconds; if the engine fails to start, switch offand wait for 10 seconds before re-using the starter.2Never start, or leave theengine running, in anunventilated building - exhaustgases are poisonous andcontain carbon monoxide, which can causeunconsciousness and may evenbe fatal.NOTE: Continued use of thestarter will not only discharge thebattery, but may damage thestarter motor and the catalyticconverter.Care point: Catalytic converterscan be damaged if the wrong fuelis used, or if an engine misfireoccurs. Before starting theengine, you should be aware ofthe precautions detailed under‘Catalytic converter’.Precautions• The diesel engine must not be run above fast idlespeed until the oil pressure warning lightextinguishes. This will ensure that the engine andturbo-charger bearings are properly lubricatedbefore being run at speed.• ALWAYS allow the engine to idle for 10 secondsbefore switching off.97
