Starting & Driving2Starting & DrivingSTARTER SWITCH01 23Once the steering lock isengaged, it is impossibleto steer the car. DO NOT removethe key or turn the starter switchoff while the car is in motion.H2685The starter switch is located to the right of the steeringcolumn and uses the following sequence of key positions tooperate the steering lock, electrical circuits and starter motor:Position O• Key can be removed• Steering is locked.• Most lighting circuits are operational, including sidelights,headlights and hazard warning lights.Position 1• Steering unlocked.• Individual electrical equipment and accessories can now beoperated.Position 2• All instruments, warning lights and electrical circuits areoperational.Position 3• Starter motor operates - release the key immediately theengine starts (the key will automatically return to thesecond position).The operation of some electrical functions will beinterrupted during engine cranking.NOTE: On automatic models,gear selector position ‘P’ or ‘N’must be selected before theengine will start.95
