Wheel ChangingCHANGING A WHEELIf possible, choose a safe place to stop away from the mainthoroughfare. Always ask your passengers to get out of the carand wait in a safe area away from other traffic.Before changing a wheel, ensure the front wheels are in thestraight ahead position, apply the handbrake and engage 1stgear (select ‘P’ for automatic gearbox cars). Observe thefollowing precautions:• Ensure the jack is positioned on firm, level ground;NEVER on soft ground, or over metal gratings ormanhole covers. DO NOT place additional materialbetween the jack and the ground, this may jeopardise thesafety of the jacking operation.• If jacking on a slope, place chocks at the front and rear ofthe wheel diagonally opposite the one to be removed.• NEVER jack the car with passengers inside or with acaravan or trailer connected!Removing the wheel trim (steel wheels only)NOTE: Switch on the hazardwarning lights to alert other roadusers.Care point: When refitting thewheel trim, ensure that the valvestem is located between valvestem guides (plastic lugsarrowed in illustration).H2785Slide the flat, wedge, end of the wheel wrench behind theedge of the wheel trim (see illustration). Then, workingcarefully around the wheel, apply a twisting action to the toolto prise the trim from the wheel.164
