MaintenanceSAFETY IN THE GARAGEIf you need to carry out maintenance, observe the followingsafety precautions at all times:• Keep your hands and clothing away from drive belts andpulleys.• If the car has been driven recently, DO NOT TOUCHexhaust and cooling system <strong>com</strong>ponents until the enginehas cooled.• DO NOT TOUCH electrical leads or <strong>com</strong>ponents whilethe engine is running, or with the starter switch turned on.• NEVER leave the engine running in an unventilated area- exhaust gases are poisonous and extremely dangerous.• DO NOT work underneath the car with the wheelchanging jack as the only means of support.• Ensure sparks and naked lights are kept away from theengine <strong>com</strong>partment.• Wear protective clothing, including, where practicable,gloves made from an impervious material.• Remove metal wrist bands and jewellery before workingin the engine <strong>com</strong>partment.• DO NOT allow tools or metal parts of the car to makecontact with the battery leads or terminals.Poisonous fluidsFluids used in motor vehicles are poisonous and should not beconsumed or brought into contact with open wounds. Theseinclude; battery acid, anti-freeze, brake and power steeringfluid, petrol, diesel, engine oil and windscreen washeradditives. Obey all instructions printed on labels andcontainers.Cooling fans may<strong>com</strong>mence operating afterthe engine is switched off, andcontinue operating for a numberof minutes. Keep clear of allfans while working in the engine<strong>com</strong>partment.Care point: Prolonged contactwith engine oil may cause seriousskin disorders, includingdermatitis and cancer of the skin.Wash thoroughly after contact.It is illegal to pollutedrains, water courses orsoil. Use authorised wastedisposal sites to dispose of usedoil and toxic chemicals.138
