MaintenanceMAINTENANCEMaintenanceROUTINE SERVICINGThe safety, reliability and performance of your car willdepend partly on how well it is maintained.Maintenance is the owner’s responsibility and you mustensure that owner maintenance operations, oil services, inspections and brake fluid and coolant changes are carriedout when required and according to the manufacturers’recommendations.Oil services and inspectionsThe service interval display in the instrument panel shows thenext service type (Oil Service or Inspection) and the distanceremaining before the next service is due. This display appearsfor 4 seconds every time the starter switch is initially turnedto the second position. The distance display commences at 15,000 miles andprogressively reduces in increments of 25 miles as the car isdriven, until zero is reached. The relevant service should becarried out after 12 months or as soon as the distance displayshows zero (whichever is the sooner). After the completion ofeach service, the servicing dealer will reset the distance displayto 15,000 miles. While the oil services and inspections have nominal distanceand time-related intervals of 15,000 miles or 12 months, bymeasuring fuel consumption the car’s monitoring system isalso able to assess the owner’s driving style and the type ofmotoring to which the car is subjected. These additionalfactors will affect the point at which the service should becarried out.For example, a car subjected predominantly to short journeymotoring, will consume more fuel, resulting in a more rapiddeterioration of the engine oil. In this case, the servicedistance indicator will reduce more rapidly, reaching zeroafter the car has travelled as few as 11,000 or 12,000 miles.Conversely, the driver of a car used mainly for longmotorway journeys, driving carefully and within the speedlimit, may well find that the service distance indicator doesnot ‘zero’ until the car has exceeded 15,000 miles.NOTE: Because the serviceinterval display reduces inincrements of 25 miles, it ispossible to undertake a shortjourney without triggering anymovement from the display.NOTE: If a service is not carriedout (or the dealer fails to reset thedisplay), the distance indicator, having reached zero, will thenstart to accumulate, but withminus values, indicating thedistance by which a service isoverdue.134
